People don't like to be addressed with Merry Christmas unless you know for sure that they celebrate Christmas because just walking around saying Merry Christmas to every person you see on the street assumes everyone is christian, and not everyone is, it is an issue in our culute that we assume everyone is of the same religion, it ignores and stamps out many of the other holidays that correspond with Christmas such as Haunkaka, Yule, and Kwanaza ( if I am forgetting one I apologize) it isn't about "not offending" it is about our society becoming socially aware to realize that there are other cultures and religious celebrations happening in the same time as Christmas. Creamy Arty 6,252 November 17, 2012 Share November 17, 2012 Every Christmas my family gathers at my aunt's place, but ever since my grandfather died in 2009 things haven't been the same. It's now more like everyone does it as a formality but they just want to get it over with. That's too bad, really, because I only recently came to a point in my life where I can appreciate these gathering that no longer mean anything to them. I'm most looking forward to a Hearth's Warming Eve party/meetup in DC on the 15th of next month. Anybody who lives in the DC area or anywhere within whatever they consider to be a reasonable driving distance should come. Shanks 10,816 November 17, 2012 Share November 17, 2012 Much of my family has either died, moved away or just drifted apart and it will be my first Christmas since my father passed away so I don't really look forward to it like I used to. I still have my mother, my brother and a cousin and aunt and uncle or two when many people don't even have that so I can count my blessing there at least. TailsIsNotAlone 3,695 November 17, 2012 Share November 17, 2012 (edited) I hate all the PC stuff where we have to tiptoe around Christmas, and I'm a left-leaning nonbeliever. Screw "season's greetings." I'm not going to say Merry Christmas to someone who I don't think is a Christian. But beyond that, forget it. I also think everybody should know the Chrstimas story whether they believe in it or not, because it's only the most important part of the entire religion. Anyway, I've always liked Christmas and I'll be spending it with my mom and brothers just like always. We still exchange gifts, which doesn't hurt...I have a much younger brother to thank for that. He has definitely kept Christmas alive in my immediate family. Edited November 17, 2012 by TailsAlone 1 "Human beings fascinate me Being just the way they are..." Envy 6,161 November 17, 2012 Share November 17, 2012 (edited) You can't say "Merry Christmas" anymore? I don't think that's true. I've always said it, and nobody has ever said a word to me about it. Sure companies say "Happy Holidays" now, but they're companies. As individuals we are 100% free to say Merry Christmas. You're worrying too much. The only thing I don't like seeing people say is "Jesus is the reason for the season". They need a history lesson. If a historical Jesus even existed, he is not believed to have been born on December 25th. "Christmas" is an adaptation of the pagans celebrating the winter solstice and the days getting longer again. Anyway, I don't presently have any Christmas plans. It's pretty far out, still. Ours isn't the only one happening around that time of year so it's understandable that store employees or people in general would use a catch-all term. I've even sent Christmas cards to another white, Christian friend of mine using Kwanzaa stamps and given him Hanukkah gift cards as a joke. The only thing I have a problem with is when people directly assault Christmas or try to commandeer it by referring to December 25th specifically as "Holiday," or some other such nonsense. And seeing as how holiday greetings are such a touchy thing I think stores that force their employees to use some form of one should cut it out. Easter is just as significant as Christmas but it's harder to sell, so it gets less attention here in the States. 1 Kyoshi made this ^^ Come join us on Equestria.tv on Fridays at 6 PM Eastern for our weekly movie nights! AegisReflector 886 November 17, 2012 Share November 17, 2012 I usually say "Happy Holidays" just because there are people out there who get offended when you use the term "Christmas". I don't care either way, but I just don't want people ranting on me for being "politically incorrect" so I just use the general term. I don't believe Christ was our Lord or Savior, but I still celebrate Christmas. I love picking out a tree and decorating it with my stunning Dragonball Z ornaments and gummi bear necklaces. Schweet, I know. Plus, the best part is Christmas Dinner. My aunt makes this succulent honey ham and many other dishes including fried oreos, Shepherd's Pie, Squash, Greek Kabobs, etc. It's a ton of food basically lol. I just hate shopping for gifts for people and I HATE it when people tell me what I want. I honestly don't care but I just don't want clothes lol. I'd rather have cash just so I can pick out my own stuff. I don't know if that makes me greedy or not, or if it contradicts my Socialist views or not.....but hey, I'm an American after all! Let's not forget the Christmas movies, too! Home Alone, Charlie Brown Christmas, The Polar Express, etc. All great movies that I enjoyed from my childhood. I could do without the Christmas music though. Seriously, playing Christmas music in November definitely isn't necessary haha.

I've never ran into a single person who was offended when I said Merry Christmas, not even my friend who is Muslim. People over react. Same. I'm one of "those" atheists, even. The holiday is what you make of it. I choose to make it about being with family, exchanging gifts and enjoying some hot cocoa in front of the fire place. For better or worse, my little family often has to "flex" a few days left or right, since during any given year, there's a good chance that I'll be sent on a short-notice trip during Christmas (or any holiday, really). I've never met anyone who was offended by non-PC greetings, either. To me, it's just an example of people walking on eggshells, afraid that the PC boogeyman will get them if their well-intentioned greeting steps on some murky cultural landmine. Fuck that. Even if there are people who are genuinely offended by all of the Christmas stuff, then they need to either unwad their panties and relax, or else move someplace where Christmas isn't celebrated. Which ever is the closest at the time :3 This year for Christmas I have no idea what's going on...our normal tradition is to eat breakfast, read the Christmas story, light the candles, open the presents, watch Charlie Brown Christmas and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (animated version), clean up, go to Great Grandpa's for Christmas dinner and general merry making, with partying until Boxing Day!! Now that Grandpa's gone, I don't know what's going on for our party....
