Birthday coming up but parents disapprove of ponies :\

YoureDown

Recommended Posts

So my birthday is coming up, and I asked my parents to buy me some t-shirts on welovefine (with the -25% discount) so they asked me to show them the shirts.

First reaction from seeing them: "What are you gay?"

I just facepalmed there, and have not talked to them for a day already.

And now, im not getting anything at all because of that.

(I actually thought my parents are open people before showing this to them, now I feel completely disgusted by them......)

I am not asking you guys for anything, I do not need it so badly, I just wanna know if anyone had any reactions similar to this one, and how (if) you got over those problems. :(

Get parents who aren't intolerant bigots. It might solve the problem. If this does not appear to be possible then just remain angry at them because them not tolerating you or the things you like is a huge sign of disrespect and any human being deserves better than to be looked down upon for their interests.

I have relatives who are really intolerant of G4 ponies. I just had to explain that they're thinking of the past generation, flowery ponies. They still aren't convinced but at least they're a bit more tolerant now.

The funny thing about this whole situation, is that my classmates took this way way better. Their first reactions werent "gay!", they were "hmm whats this?". Faith in this generation > faith in past generation.

Maybe you should've messed with them right after that and say that you are gay.I think that you should just take this experience as a reminder that being financially independent and superior to everyone else is crucial to your ability to live a certain lifestyle.

woah woah woah. I did not say I'm gay. im 100% straight, they thought I was gay. Also, financially independent at the age of 16 is pretty hard, imo impossible and not a smart thing to do.

I know, I mean just messed with their head and lie about being gay to see their reaction.Nothing is impossible if you are determined to do it, you just gotta work smarter instead of working harder if you want to make lots of $ while still getting good grades.Invest all the $ you earned instead of saving them.

Youre still assuming things.

1. I didnt lie about being gay.... -.- read what i already said, twice.

2. Isnt it great when you dont have $ to spend? -.-

1.I meant that you should have done it just to get a funny reaction from them, I know that you did not do it.

2.nevermind, you'll do it naturally when the time comes.

I had an experience very similar to yours about three weeks ago.

My parents found out about me being a Brony and they reacted to it very negatively. They thought it was weird and they even threw out the whole "they are probably a bunch of pedophiles" card. I was very disappointed in them, as I think very highly of my parents. Actually, I was so mad that I made a thread on here much like you have. Since then they don't talk about it, and they leave me alone about the whole thing. I'd just kind of leave it alone and not let it cause any tension in your house.

I am in the lucky position of having a job though so while they don't really approve there is nothing they can do about the MLP stuff I own.

Hopefully the whole thing just came as a shock to them as it has been said already in this thread. They are from an older generation. Now that it is out in the open and they have some time to understand and come to terms with it they will calm down about the whole thing.

which country do you live again, Pakistan, Israel? anyways, I forgot...

It's surprising that they didn't whip you right there. jk maybe the culture in your country is VERY intolerant and closed minded with the content of the media (call it a man watching MLP)...I am not to sure about that, but don't take it as an offense, but I would be SCARED to move to your country.

well, since you didn't ask for advice, I'll say no, this never happened to me.

I don't always get annoyed with my parents' intolerance, but when I do, I replace them.

Why don't you just ask for money, and buy the shirts yourself?

Happy Birthday!

No offense to you but I somehow find that to be prejudice. It doesn't really matter what country he lives in. Many bronies are from places like Israel.

I think that you should just ask them for money as well. And if they say anything about your shirt when you buy it, then just ignore them. Although you respect your parents, don't let them control on what you can like or watch. Your old enough to make your own decisions, obviously. Be proud to be a brony! :) Also, Happy (early) Birthday! Hope you get what you want. ;)

Haha, did you tell them about the show, and how good the show actually is? or how many people out there watching it? i dont know how many fans there are of the show, but guessing around the millions. still, accusing you of being gay because of mlp is a serious problem with their ideals. dont wrry, they should come around and start being considerate if you explain :)

Happy Birthday!

It's your parents that are to be disdained, yet you got to be "quicker on your feet." When they insinuated you were gay, you should have said no why? And if they said something like the shirts have ponies on them then you should have been like Bugs Bunny is a rabbit, Daffy is a duck, what's wrong with a pony?

(I don't have parents or relatives like this, but still I ask for cash for my birthday. ;) )

I am really sorry bud. I hope you have a nice constructive talk with them.

The way I see it, you're parents may just be joking around. See if the're serous about calling you gay, and if they are, they aren't very good parents for judging ponies like that.

I would just ask for money for your birthday. I mean, if it's your money, they can't control what you do with it. I don't really know what to tell you about the whole "Are you gay" thing, considering I haven't told my parents, any of my close friends, and have only told three or four people I don't really know. Good luck.

I don't dislike him for the country he lives in...but I'm just expressing my personal opinion of the country not him as a person, but whatever, if you thought that I wanted to offend him, then that's not true, it wasn't my intention.

This just makes me sad. Close-mindedness is always something that should be unwelcome, and to receive such behavior from parental figures? Shameful. If they weren't joking around about it, (which I'm guessing they weren't because they decided not to get you anything at all) then that's terrible, and I'm sorry for you.

I agree that asking for money can get you the shirt you want in the end, but like some of the others ponies here have suggested, you should have some sort of discussion with your parents. They ARE your PARENTS, and if you don't receive the support and tolerance you deserve from them, then you shouldn't feel obligated to look upon them as supportive role-models. I'm not saying you should go in raring to argue and bicker, but simply present the fact that it's just cool to be brony B)

Screw the parents' ways of thinking. If they call you gay just for liking one harmless lil' show that's trying to aim at all audiences then they are truly lost.

I hope you have a happy birthday and that you should get all the pony gifts you deserve. ;)

Ooh, wow. First off, I'm really sorry. I haven't personally gone through anything like this but I can imagine that it would be awful. I suppose if the topic ever comes up again then what you need to do is impress upon them that firstly, you're straight, secondly, it is a high quality show with thousands of male fans, and most importantly that you were really bothered by them jumping to conclusions and judging you. If they are good parents, which I hope they are, if they realize that they hurt you by saying what they said then they will apologize.

Second off, even if your relationship with your parents should be your first priority, if you want the shirts them you might have to pay for them yourself , with birthday cash or money that you save up eventually. If they won't let you buy them with your own money then that is unfortunate, and I'm sorry.

Good luck, and I hope you can get this all sorted out.

You should have just said 'No, I just like My Little Pony.'(heck, you should still say that if you can) ;)

Honestly, have a little self confidence! Your parents should be accepting of what you like by default anyway, and besides, it's not like you're a totally different person for it. A little confidence can really go a long way around others. :)

This kind of thing always irks me. There was a time when a girl would've gotten a weird response from her parents if she wanted a GI Joe or Transformers shirt for her birthday. Nowadays, that kind of request doesn't even bat an eyelash let alone raise concerns about her sexual orientation. It's going to take a bit longer before male fans of ponies are given the same benefit of the doubt. MLP:FiM in time will be seen as having a gender neutral fanbase not unlike Sonic or Spongebob. We haven't quite gotten there yet.

They need to make more T-Shirts that help dispel old notions of MLP. One could be a scene of the Mane 6 beating up some changlings with the caption "This isn't your mother's My Little Pony."
