Some theories on why ponies aren't vegetarians.

I have been wondering this since the scene where the CMC went to feed the pigs; If Ponies are herbavores like we see them being (pretty sure most of their diet is apples and pastries) then what use would they have for pigs? I could reason cows and chickens for dairy products but what do pigs have to do with that?

 

Also cows at least seem to be sentient beings, so why are they treated like farm animals at all? Why doesnt Bessy and her kin turn a profit on their lactating and be their own boss instead of being owned by the apple family?

 

If they farm pigs and cows and chickens does that mean their are slaughter houses in Equestria? Ponies seem to be herbavores and Dragons eat gems and diamonds so probably not... but then again what do Griffins and Minotaurs eat? You dont just farm pig for the sake of farming pig there has to be someone who wants what they have.

didnt the older mlp series have horses that were normal? and from what iv seen no one eats meat so its probably just like that because its supost to relate to farms in rl

They sell meat and fish to gryphons while use chikens and cows for eggs. Although cows are probably not raised as domestic creatures since they have civil rights and more likely work for themselves and they sell their own milk for bits.

 

No matter what they will say about Gryphons. They cant be vegetarian. Birds nature depend on their beaks. If they are flat like ducks then they are herbivores and if they are shaped like hooks (eagles,vultures,owls) then they were designed to rip apart meat. Im afraid that based on Gilda, all gryphons are carnivores or at least omnivores. Even based in AKR books, manticores were hunting zebras. So we can assume that not all races are vegetarian. Remeber that in one scene(inspiration manifestation) ponies were eating shrimps which is still an animal meat.

There was also a a scene where Aj was trying to eat a sandwich with ham but it could be just an animation mistake.

 

Of course the more family friendly version for kids will be probably state that Aj use pigs to hunt for truffles or other nonsense.

(there isnt a single farmer who would raise domestic pigs for just truffles, cost of fodder and time and effort to raise them compared to profit would ruin her farm)

Chillax, it wouldn't be a slaughterhouse. It'd be a fun, happy, brightly decorated place, and the animals would WANT to be eaten and told they were delicious, like in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

 

Also, I'm pretty sure that because the animals on Applejack's farm are sentient, they work to earn their keep. And then they're eaten when they're too old to work, and "Finally ready to be eaten". Because they would WANT to be eaten and told they were delicious, like in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
