I awoke, feeling groggy, in a damp, dark cell. I had lived here my entire life, I think. I saw a window, shining light inside.Oh how I wished that I could see the world outside. It looked beautiful, but the level of light was near blinding. Come to think of it, I haven't seen this window be this bright before. But I had a hard time remembering, and my head was pounding. There was a giant cell door, plated with some unknown metal, at least to me. I felt like I knew more than I was sure I did, it was like I could feel the names of the metal, this place, and even myself, but I couldn't say it, I couldn't put it into focus. I just wanted to leave, what WAS the world outside like? I had a feeling it was a happy place but I couldn't be content until I have seen it with my own eyes. I heard three electronic beeps, and then suddenly, the door opened, startling me. I just looked there, into the equally dark hallway.

I saw an office, with the light from the window shining in, I could just barely read "Security" the door had it's own green dim light, I believe if I remembered that that means it's unlocked. I just stood there, looking. Thinking, what would other people think, who was inside this door? I ignored my fear, pressing on. I walked up to the door, and it opened, with a sort of "swish" like sound. The room had no people inside, to my surprise. There were racks of supplies. I picked up a small tube with a glass screen on front. The sign above it read "flashlight" so I assumed that was what this is. I read "light" and stared blankly. Before this morning, all the light I've ever seen has been artificial. I also looked and saw a row of lockers. I opened them up one by one, taking security cards, as I remembered for a moment that some doors would require them.

Why were some of my memories being withheld from me? I couldn't figure it out. Why had I been in this sell? I found a handgun on a shelf, with one clip of ammo. I put the handgun and ammo in my pocket, I left it unloaded. I looked at my attire, it was a dusty black jumpsuit. What did my face look like? No mirrors were present. I saw a button that said "Lockdown" it's switch was tilted toward "engaged" I tilted it towards "disengaged'. I heard doors opening and some clicks as doors unlocked. Walking slowly, I headed back to the hallway. And saw that another door was unlocked, I walked up to it, and it opened. Inside was another dark corridor. I turned on

my flashlight. I saw that to charge the battery for the flashlight I could crank the handle on the side. What an interesting mechanism. I continued walking, trying not to lose my nerve. I felt no imminent danger yet more nervous than I had felt just lying in the cell. Why? I found a door that had a sign over it saying "Engineering". So I walked inside, maybe someone here could help me. So I looked around inside, seeing almost nothing. Until I spotted a big generator. It was off. So I flicked it on, and then the lights turned on.

I saw that while the lights were dim, they were enough. I could now see, that this place was...empty? The walls were a dim and dark grey color. They weren't anything special, but signs of aging were present. I walked out, and saw some doors. One said "Administration".

I walked in, maybe they could help. It occurred to me about my family, where were they? I felt I had one, but who were they? And more importantly, where were they? I looked thoroughly, until I had to enter administration, I felt my heart beating faster, until I walked in, and my heart sank. I saw it was also empty, besides a paper that said my name was...Operative Shade? I don't understand, it said my family was in cell block C. I was in Cell Block A when I started. I walked into the corridor and looked at Cell Block C's door. It was covered in wooden planks, nailing it shut. I had to find something to remove these. I ran to storage. Inside I found...a picture

of my family, a little boy..my son, James. And my wife...Jessica...my head was cut out of the picture. I heard a "Ting" and I put the picture in my pocket...walking over to the source of the noise.

On the ground, I saw an axe, and axe covered in dried blood, I picked it up. "What has...happened here" I spoke verbally for the first time since I have woke up. I walked over to the storage room exit slowly, stepping back into the corridor. Thoughts of James rushed back into my head. He was the sweetest boy, light blond hair and eyes that were green like an emerald. He was funny and outgoing. He was at the top of his class, and we went to Charles Orchard together all the time, to hang out and pick blue berries. And my wife,Jessica, with her brunette hair and her...blue eyes. She was the most beautiful and down to Earth women I had ever known. I was going to find my family, and I wasn't leaving without them.

In a rush of adrenaline, my heart started pounding, I was bashing the boards, cutting them with the axe, prying them off, until the door half opened, and then shorted out. I got onto my knees and crawled inside. All the cells were shut. I heard whispers, echoes almost. But they weren't discernable. I walked and saw the security room on this block, I used a security card to open it. When I did, it was also almost empty, but covered in blood. I opened the cell doors, and started to yell. "James, Jessica!? JAMES, JESSICA" so I rushed

back into the cell block, and saw that in each cell was a coffin. This can't be right...no..they must have been moved...no! I rushed out... and past the Admin room. I saw the archive room. Inside, I looked and saw a cabinet labeled "Operative Shade". I pulled out my file. And stared at it, and I stared...and I stared...and I started to cry. This is what it said, and I'll never forget it:

I looked at the calender, this day was the twentieth of October 2091, I was in captivity for five years. If it was even that early, since the facility appeared abandoned.

I just sat there, crying. What have I done? This can't be true. That's when I knew, I had to see the light. I had to see the outside, just once. Just once. I kept running, and saw an elevator door, it said this was... "Subbasement 15A" that doesn't make sense, I saw a window in my cell. I just hit floor 1 and waited while the elevator rose. I cried, I just cried, I started to scream. I waited, the elevator door opened, and I saw the exit. I walked up to it. Putting my hand on it...the light outside was orange. I walked outside and saw a city..destroyed...all of the buildings, abandoned. No one and nothing was left...I knew what I had to do. I walked back inside the building.

I walked onto the elevator and clicked the button for "roof floor" and when it reached there. I stepped out, I felt the sun hitting my face. and I walked up to the edge to think. I was thinking, I've killed my entire family. What have I done. Not only that, I have been lied to for my entire life. The light I saw...my hope...it was all fake. I was nothing, my entire five years here was a lie, while they waited for me to die, and ironically, I outlived them. I had cheated death. But I was done cheating, I looked over the edge. The ground almost twelve stories

below me.

I walked up to the edge, and threw myself off. I was finally free.

What sorcery is this...

Wow.

Grim.

Though I perfectly understand where this is coming from.

You might want to tag this "dark" and "fan fiction"

I'll tag it dark but not fan fiction since it's not based on anything other than itself. But yeah, I'll add "Dark" as a tag to it. But otherwise what did you think of it?
