Anyone Else think that Discord's biggest mistake was not getting rid of Spike

As far we know all of Equestria (aside from Celestia and Luna) was Discorded yet Spike was perfectly fine. It seems Discord either ignored him (not likely) or Spike was completely immune to his power (highly probable). Now since Discord couldn't warp Spike (if he had he could have intercepted those old letters so Twilight couldn't get 'em), shouldn't he have realized that the preteen dragon who remained rational and determined was connected to the six teenaged ponies whose minds and personalities he broke and changed? He seemed to be aware of everything that went on while he was trapped in stone, so he must have known about Spike. Now since Spike was immune to his power, shouldn't that have made Discord realize that he posed just as much of a threat to the chaotic chimera's plans as his six friends would once restored and adorned with the elements? After all, being aware of Spike, he'd realize that Spike could recieve letters from Celestia and send them, since Spike must have been immune, Discord had no way of intercepting those letters, thus Twilight would see them and remember the good time the mane seven had together and restore her other friends to normal and procceed to put him back in that statue. So Discord began sealing his own fate when he did nothing about Spike, aside from whatever he attempted offscreen. If you were Discord wouldn't you try to just kill Spike once you realized that you couldn't break him with your mind games or the brute force that worked on Fluttershy? Discord was doomed when he moved on to phase two while Spike was still in the equation.

That's actually a great idea, I never thought about it. The entire town of Ponyville just became Discorded, everything, so dragons must have been immune, then.

However, I don't think that Discord actually knew everything about Spike as he did with the mane six. I think (and this is just speculation) that he knew about the mane six through the Elements of Harmony passed down from the princesses when he was banished before. So either he didn't think Spike was much of a threat, and/or he didn't know Spike could pass letters in the first place.

But think about it; even if Spike HAD been Discorded, Princess Celestia could manually send the letters herself, I believe.

It does make you kinda wonder as to why Discord didn't do anything to him, yet he caused chaos in all the other creatures, and pony's.

Maybe he just didn't want to deal with spike since he was one of the few creatures who had a mind compared to most of the other animals, and he didn't feel like using the effort himself to Discord him or something?

I actually think Discord just didn't believe that Spike could've done anything, I don't think he even believed that Twilight reading the letters was going to effect her or give her any chance of saving her other friends and even trying to use the elements of harmony.

Heck Discord didn't really seem intimidated by the elements of harmony or the Magic of friendship until after he noticed them working at the very end, so I think he was just totally unaware of how much power that their Friendships possesed, Otherwise he would've done something while the Mane 6 where working on getting their friendships restored and then using the elements of harmony.

Basically he just got cocky I guess. :P.

Probably, since he was the only direct link to Celestia. He seemed to know quite a bit about each of the mane 6, but we don't know how extensive his knowledge is related to the princesses, Spike, or the friendship reports.

My theory always was that near the end, Discord got way too cocky. He acted like nothing was going to happen, but it took him by surprise. I've always wondered if he even knew the Mane 6 became un-Discorded, because of when he tells Applejack not to lie to him, because he made her a liar.

Probably being Discord. Otherwise, he'd be rational and wouldn't tell everypony where the Elements are and instead of games he'd just wipe out everypony posing any threat at all. Only then he would go out and play.

Well with what he knows now, if he ever returns bumping off Spike will likely be one of his top priorities. Once he's out of the equation he can break the others without any risk of being thwarted. He'd know something had to free Twilight from his influence and that Celestia had a an obvious hoof in it. If Spike is the direct fax line to her, then with him dead Celestia would have to restore Twilight in person, she'd get ambushed by Discord right upon setting hoof outside the castle. She's nowhere near as powerful as she used to be, and may even be slowly dying, she's powerful enough to reverse some of Twilight's magic but then how do we know that the want it need it spell wasn't child's play for Twilight to cast in the first place, she didn't even bat a bloodshot eye when she unleashed it, plus when that royal wedding was invaded by changlings, she got her plot handed to her by the changling queen as if she was a simple earth pony. She's definitely getting somewhat weaker, Discord knows that. He may not seem like it but under all that chaos he obviously had some small disjointed inkling of a plan.

Discord's only weakness in the end turned out to be his blatant overconfidence, so I would not put it past him to forget the dragon he saw as nothing more than a pointless lackey to Twilight. He might have not even been aware dragons had that message delivery system. Certainly an interesting theory.

Discord probably could've killed them all anytime he wanted. Heck, killing one of them or simply dumping the Elements in some unreachable place would've sealed his victory without further effort. That'd be the logical thing to do.

But he didn't want to win in the flattest sense of the term, he wanted to win in a way that demonstrated his complete mastery of his opponents. He wanted to see them give up after losing in the most pointless and humiliating manner possible. He seems to love ruining the moments of triumph of others. He steals the Elements in such a way as to make Celestia look incompetent instead of farsighted and gives them back once they've become utterly useless.

I also kind of suspect that by the time Spike started regurgitating letters Discord had lost interest in the Mane Six anyway.

I think no, Spike, aside from being the one who channeled Celestia's letters, didn't do anything else, even Discord laughed at the poor attempt of being the substitute of RD.

But i think he could have just simply killed him if he wanted to overpower them. But he wanted to win in style, one of his biggest mistakes...

Fascinating. I haven't really given that concept very much thought.

I do not actually think that Spike is resistant to Discord's magic, however--there is really no proof of this and there wouldn't be much reason for him to be able to resist the god of chaos.

However, he was still very important as the messenger who delivered the letters from Celestia to Twilight, which set off a chain of events leading to Discord's defeat. Still, that chain of events could have been cut off from the other side if Discord had thought to actually watch Celestia and make sure that she didn't try anything to stop his scheme. I mean seriously, Discord, she's the current ruler of the land! Do you think she'd just let you waltz in and steal the throne?! >:(

Ahem. Sorry. Still, am I the only one who thinks that Discord's actual biggest mistake was not stepping two feet to the right when he was about to be hit by the Elements of Harmony beam? ;) jk jk.

I'm not quite sure what gives you the impression that Spike being ignored is "not likely" and his being immune is "probable". I, for one think it's the other way around. He didn't aim any magic towards Spike. He didn't even try. He probably thought it wasn't worth the effort, he'd discordid the representatives of the elements, what else did he need to do?
