DoctorWhovian1902 596 January 26, 2013 Author Share January 26, 2013 I am in a similar situation. Just 5 minutes ago I was watching S3EP11 and my mom said if people found out they would think I was a child molester or something. But I retain and still watch the show. You shouldn't have to leave the fandom because you feel like your being forced to That's almost exactly what my parents said to me. They were convinced others would think I'm a pedophile or something. I think they've been watching too much Fox News. Then my dad asks me why I roll my eyes at his tastes. I just look at him and almost say "Well, let's think for a second, shall we?"

I love my parents they have never done anything wrong to me. It's just that they are kind of naive to my generation and don't get certain things. Back in their day if you were a man who liked the original G1 MLP then you would get stares. This new cartoon is different and people fail to realize that. I tried watching generations 1 through 3 and it never appealed to me. The characters were boring and there were no plots to be found. I want to show my dad the brony documentary so he at least has an understanding of the culture and everything with it.
Rivet Canterlot Mechanic 63 January 26, 2013 Share January 26, 2013 Honestly It isn't their choice and they aren't in a position to judge what you do. As long as you don't rub pony related stuff in there faces, what reason do they have to say you can't be a brony. Although if it can cause serious problems ignoring their wishes then maybe you should just humour them for a bit and become a closet brony for a little while. The problem with doing that, for me at least, is that both he and my mom are going to take that opinion that bronies are the product of 9/11 or something like that, and assume it means we can't deal with reality. Then they'll attack me with that, and their misconceptions, and...that's just it, I can't win. The problem is that if someone whom they consider a "reliable source" suddenly goes against their beliefs, they'll throw them out like trash on Tuesday. It's why, now that I've considered it, if my friend did become a brony, it wouldn't help my cause any.

Harmonic Revelations 8,835 January 26, 2013 Share January 26, 2013 (edited) Because they know more than me...on certain subjects, at least. Their logic is fairly simple, as they put it: "We're up here, you're down there." That's just not right. Sure, it makes sense somewhat, but not in perspective. I fail to see the logic in that. If they're unwilling to hear the truth than how are they any higher up? If anything that makes them lower in a clearly unbiased sense. From logic I can deduce that if they're not willing to know what they're talking about, they won't know what they're talking about. And by the way you described them, they don't know what they're talking about. Edited January 26, 2013 by ~Chaotic Aeternae Salvtis~

If they're unwilling to hear the truth than how are they any higher up? If anything that makes them lower in a clearly unbiased sense. I never said it was right. But it is reality, and, unless I'm wrong on this, it seems as though they're too far gone for logic. Besides, if I pointed what you said out to them, it would only create more problems. I mean, no one wants to admit they're wrong. Especially when you're a grown adult having it pointed out to you by your ignorant teenager (irony). You should have seen the other day, I was making a claim about something I'd learned about at school, and they said that I was wrong. So then one Google search and a couple of paragraphs of reading later, I proved that I was right. My dad held his hands up in a "okay, you win" sort of fashion and actually admitted I was right. The problem lies in the fact that they automatically thought I was wrong, and I had to prove it before they believed me.

I swear, I asked them for a plush once, and a few days later this happened. I can't buy anything, I can't ask for anyone to buy it for me, I'm between a rock and a hard place. Also, let me get this straight. Your dad accepts the fandom, but your mom doesn't? I just don't understand that. Usually it's the other way around. The "gay pride" joke doesn't help any when there was already a controversy surrounding whether or not Rainbow Dash is lesbian, not to mention the idea that we're a bunch of homosexuals. Not helping, parents. Not helping. My dad likes to joke around a lot too, but he tends to be a bit malicious, much like the hater trolls we deal with. He isn't funny either, and annoys me 99 times out of 100. He won't even joke about the fandom, it's too easy to make up bullcrap statements and use them like they're gospel (which only makes it more ironic that they require proof before they even consider believing what I say if they don't already know it themselves).
crazitaco 596 January 26, 2013 Share January 26, 2013 (edited) hmm force them to read through this thread. maybe, through our combined logic, they will see just how stupid and ignorant they are behaving. also, try showing them some real life statistics about bronies. http://www.bronystudy.com/id1.html they can't deny the facts. and the facts are that bronies are perfectly normal individuals, there are practically no differences between bronies and non bronies, other than that we are more accepting, less neurotic, and slightly more shy as a group. hell, slightly more bronies are actually straight than non-bronies. Mindrop 412 January 26, 2013 Share January 26, 2013 Just hang in there? I'm not certain if my dad knows, or even if he cares, my mom, not a big fan of it. But my advice, is be yourself. The fandom does not hurt you, not like drugs, sex, alchole, or smoking, heck, point that out if you have not. Be twilightlicious man! Just be yourself, don't let others dictate who you are, I learned that the hard way. 1 Tulpas: Twi, Reales, & Orson.

No. Just no. They'll take massive offense to everything that's been said about them, block MLP Forums from the internet, and go completely crazy. As for the article, they won't even take a glance at it because of the ponification of the doctors. Also, the very mention of rule 34 would send them flying. Yes, there's porn out there of everything, but it's the very notion that the fandom I'm involved with does things like that that would anger them. Still, at this point I'm at a loss. It may help, and I've bookmarked it for later in the event it ever becomes useful, but they'll look for any downsides to the fandom (ie: the larger rating of singles, the lower dating preference percentage, etc.) and blow it out of proportion.
CMagic 34 January 26, 2013 Share January 26, 2013 Parents will always be like that. Being disprovable of new and different things from what they have used too, except for those parents that are also bronies with their children, that is the most awesome thing in my mind. But anyway, no matter what if you want to keep being a brony you will be a brony no matter what! If it makes you feel better then my mom is disapproving of me being a brony too, once she scared me with a visit to a physiologist and it never happened, neither i changed after that, i actually evolved in being a brony! Be strong! And Never Change! BROHOOF!

Envy 6,169 January 26, 2013 Share January 26, 2013 Remember, when they say "Be yourself", there is an implied asterisk. That asterisk reads "As long as you're straight, fit into the proper gender role of your birth sex, are a member of the mainstream religion that has hold over our country, etc. etc." Of course, there are places where you shouldn't be yourself, like if being yourself means harming others. However, I can't help but be endlessly annoyed by those going around telling others to be yourself, but then when you come out to them "Keep that to yourself!" or "Oh no, no, no, you can't be that!". Liking MLP fits into the same situation, because if you're a male liking MLP, then you're going against established gender roles. Society does not like that. 4 Everything needs more woodwind! The main problem with the documentary lies in the comment that we're the result of 9/11. It says that we can't handle reality, and therefore have problems. I know everyone perceives things differently, but I can imagine, scratch that, picture them sitting there watching it, when that moment comes on. I was not expecting isfj, though it would explain their reaction to you becoming more ''independent'' as they may not be used to it. And yes, thee more I read, the more interesting it gets.
