Translating MLP into Latin

Hi, for my college Winter Term project I am translating the first two episodes into latin.  These are how I have translated the names, but still a work in progress.

 

• Twilight Sparkle: Crepusculum^neuter Scintilla
• Rainbow Dash: Iris -ridis or Arcus^{fifth declension, masculine} Flictus^{fifth declension, masculine}
• Rarity: Raritas -atis
• Fluttershy: Quassus
• Applejack: Malum
• Pinkie Pie: Rosea Risio -onis^female
• Princess Celestia: Regina Celestia
• Princess Luna: Regina Luna
• Nightmare Moon: Insomnis Noctiluca
• Spike: Clavus -i

Care to explain what the superscripts on some of the words represent? like the "neuter" above Crepusculum, it does sound really interesting...

Latin has genders for every noun, with neuter being neutral. I don't think there's really specific meaning to it, it's mostly for grammatical purposes.

yeah I am studying Latin, neuter and the declensions determine how verbs and adjectives anew conjugated to the noun. masculine and feminine verbs have different verb endings.

Latin is a very interesting language. Its a shame it went the way of the Romans that spoke it.

Now all we're left with are offshoots of latin with other languages mixed in.

Languages like Italian, French, German, English, Spanish & Portuguese.

I have been doing my own translation for fun. My personal translations of the names, trying to make it so they flow nicely:

 

Twilight Sparkle = Aurora Scintilla (I know that Aurora is dawn, but that fits for the student of the sun goddess)

Rainbow Dash = Arcus Avolator (Rainbow Dasher)

Rarity = Raritas (same thing)

Fluttershy = Penna Papilio (Butterfly feather. Usually Papilio.)

Applejack = Mala Arbore (Apples [from the] tree. She's hard! Applelie is Mala Mendax, which is a pun on "bad liar")

Pinkie Pie = Punica Placenta (Pink Cake. I'll need something new for the Cakes...)

Princess Celestia = Regina Caelestis (Looks like I'm not the only one who made her a queen. I also refer to her as "Regina Maior", or "the greater princess")

Princess Luna = Regina Luna (also referred to as "Regina Minor", or "the lesser/smaller princess")

Spike = Clavus (same)

I've adjustments to some of the names.  I wish there was a better translation for princess in latin besides Regina.  The other option is "filia regis" which translates to daughter of the king, but because there is no king or higher power above princess it does not make sense in context.

 

Rainbow Dash: Iridiflictus (decided to take the middle road and make a compound of Iris -idis and Arcus Flictus)

The word for farmer in Latin is "agricola", so if you could tie that in with Arbor or Pomus (fruit-bearing tree) it could make a nice name. Most Latin names roll off the tongue - common names includes Volubilis and Liberalis. Try and make AJ's do the same

This is all very interesting. I like other obsolete/not-as-well-known languages with a good history, and not the common ones (English, Spanish, ect). I wish I knew Latin...

Malum also means "apple". Yay for homonyms! The reason why the fruit from the tree of knowledge is typically depicted as an apple comes from the Latin translation using that word for "knowledge of good and evil". So my terrible pun of a "bad apple" (malum malum) dates back hundreds of years!

I'm pretty sure the word for "apple" is "pomum"... that's where the French got the word "pomme". It would make sense seeing as "pomus" translates to "fruit-bearing tree".

 

I might have to dig out my Latin textbooks... I studied it for four years and ended up getting an E on the final.

*looks up online* It looks like a less specific synonym. Wiktionary says:

 

pōmum (genitive pōmī); n, second declension

1. any type of fruit

Knowing how Applejack feels about speakin' fancy, I might translate her name as Applejackus (genitive Applejackus, I really like 5th declension nouns).

The letter "j" doesn't actually exist in the original Latin alphabet. It's substituted with an i in Latin, for words like ianua and iudex (meaning door and judge, respectively). So it would have to be Appleiackus.

This is a really interesting idea! I took three years of Latin in high school, so I might be of some assistance if you need any.

I took some Latin in middle school, but not enough to be of help beyond broad explanations of general grammatical concepts.
