movies/tv Someone asked this on another site I'm on...

She asked: Why do people complain when (an American) TV show doesn't include people of color or GLTB people?

My opinion:

The only opinion that I have had recently which agreed with this complaint was about the Batman film that just came out & the way Catwoman was portrayed. In the comics that the movie was heavily based on, Catwoman was a lesbian black woman. In the movie, she was played by Anne Hathaway as a straight woman. Just sayin', but there was no reason (in my opinion) to change the character into a white straight woman. Its f***ing Catwoman! She badass as hell in the comics, so keep her that way! Anyways, it just bugged me.

But to be honest I don't watch television shows ever really, unless they are on Netflix and heavily recommended by friends. I've seen Supernatural, Game of Thrones, and American Horror Story recently. I choose the movies I want to watch based on the story premise alone. I dont care what race or gender the characters are. Just sayin', so i really dont understand when people get all up in arms over "TV is so white" or "TV is so straight". They are mostly complaining about mainstream television, so stop watching it! There is tons of other stuff out there that quite frankly is better anyways. If you don't like it, don't watch it! Television is written in the way it is written for networks to get better ratings. If less people watch it, the less support there is for a show.

...But I am sure not everyone agrees with my opinion... So I wanted to open this question to you all, what are your thoughts?

Catwoman was black? Marvel fan, but I swear she was white. I may be thinking of someone else (Maybe Black Cat) though. I do remember her being a lesbian though.

I don't care what race and such characters are. As long as they are some what accurate when compared to the source material, that's fine.

Yes in the Marvel comics she was white, but the movies were based off of Frank Miller's Batman comics. And agreed, it really doesn't matter. For the sake of that movie, it's still a great movie! But one of the greatest things about the newest Batman movies is that they are based on Frank Miller's Batman, who was much darker than all of the previous Batman characters. So to see them stay so close to the comics but change Catwoman was just unnecessary, imo. For most people it doesn't change a thing either way.

And I guess I shouldn't really say that Christopher Nolan based his trilogy on Frank Miller's batman because he really didn't, he just stole alot of ideas. Here is a great article describing the differences actually. Idk, for me the best Catwoman was Frank Miller's.

I think though that maybe the Halle Berry movie Catwoman might have influenced Nolan's Catwoman. Halle Berry's was horrible! It was silly and boring. But at the time it was a big deal that Catwoman was portrayed as a black woman because every single one of the previous Catwomen (on TV/the movies) have been white. Idk, sorry this has totally become a rant about Batman, lol oops!
