Discord has fooled them all: Not Reformed?

Speaking of Discord; I've heard that someponies are not pleased that
discord wasn't evil enough.

 

First of all, Discord was never shown to be very evil in the original 2 episodes. He was just creating chaos. If he were evil, he would have just destroyed the ponies with a click of his claws. He wanted to disable their Elements hence the corruption and it was also done for his amusement.

 

Also, the biggest aspect of the episode is the fact that Discord was able to accomplish 2 very important things:

 

1. Make Fluttershy swear to never use her element against him

2. Destroyed all of Twilight's books that hold the spells that can banish him.

 

 

While he does promise to somewhat behave to Fluttershy and Celestia, the fact
is he has officially made it impossible for the others to ever banish
him again unless the others can convince Fluttershy to break her promise
which could be something rather difficult. However, the most important
thing is this:

 

He does not want to lose his friendship with Fluttershy and yet he is not pleased with having to
"behave." If one thinks of it, all he needs to do is "behave" until

Fluttershy passes away from old age and then he is free to cause as much
chaos as he wants as he is immortal.

 

Hence Discord's episode had him showing a lot more thought in the future than some ponies may think......

I believe that while Discord was most certainly evil, he was evil because he had no other choice; after all, you can't do much good by causing chaos. I think that he truly is reformed, but only because he's friends with Fluttershy (and too a lesser extent the rest of the Mane 6). Perhaps he'll relapse to his evil ways when she does inevitably pass on?

Honestly, I don't see why people come up with these crazy theories for a children's TV show. It's for kids, it's not supposed to be complicated like that!

I don't find Discord evil to be honest. He's like a kid who knows he is god-like, but he has never truly harmed anypony even though he has the ability too. His chaos is more towards his sick amusement than actually killing, maiming, and slaughtering.

 

I mean if you look at what he did to Ponies of Ponyville, he never actually harmed any of them. He just made them a bit wacky. The only ones he actually caused to "suffer" were the Mane 6 in order to keep their elements from working. The rest of the time he was just busying himself by making buildings spin or ponies act oddly.

 

Evil is more or less like the changling Princess (cannot spell her name to save my life) who wanted to conquer and destroy.

Just because it's a kid's show, doesn't mean it cannot be complicated, Danny Phantom had some pretty deep storylines (With the whole time god storylines) and other shows like Gargoyals was VERY complicated in their storylines. Even though this is primary a kid's cartoon for little kids, doesn't mean the writers will dumb it down and I think we've seen a lot of evidence of this.

I love writing and movies so I get wrapped up into these small little details. I mean, you should have seen me when SAW came out. I was analyizing every single scene, every new character, ever small detail to try and predict what would happen in the next movies. I love things like this you know? In order to befriend one doesn't have to be the one to take the first step. Now that he knows what friendship is and that it fulfills a certain happiness in one's existence, who says he wont make other friends through whatever ordeals or situations he goes through or conjurs up.

The possibility is there, I agree. Personally I've always held the thought that he is secretly very fascinated with Twilight given the very close attention he gave her in season 2. Besides trying to corrupt her, I think he is watching her as well as her element is very rare apparently.

When you say that Discord is not evil, you're doing it from the POV of an audience. You are not inside the show having your house turned into a weird cardboard prop. From the point of view of the ponies, having their lives destroyed, he was very much evil. And he was doing this just because he thought it was funny and just because he has the power to do so. If he was a child, he'd be a bully. If he was an adult, he'd be a criminal.

 

Now, about that episode... I didn't like it because it felt more like bad parenting than friendship, but the canon says that he is become Fluttershy's friend. Ok... You're right. He may very well just turn "chaotic" again after Fluttershy's death. But what's stopping him from becoming friends with ponies along his immortal life, now that "Fluttershy has opened the door"? Also... Is he immortal? Who said so? We assumed it much the same I assumed Celestia is so too.

I believe that the reason he was "reformed" was to get access to his magic more than him causing good for Celestia did say "I will need his magic for good instead of evil". I think it was more to get him "on their side" more than making him "good."

I think they're trying to say that he doesn't intend evil. He's not cruel for the sake of being cruel. He's doing for teh lulz, not teh evulz. He's closer to a natural evil than a moral evil.

Agreed. But people excuse Discord of his responsibility because of this. But they don't excuse other deviant behaviors. Many kind of mental disorders generate behaviors that harm people. But these individuals are just doing it for fun and they will think that it's natural for them.

Are they any more excusable?

 

EDIT: people have brought to my attention how stupid of me it was to mention pedophilia in a forum about ponies. So I changed it.

I think I would have liked this episode a lot more if Celestia's motivation for releasing Discord was compassion. Especially after we learned that he was conscious inside his stone prison.

 

 

Yes, I'm assuming that he will. But that's because I think that the show is telling us the true. I think it's fair to assume that once he understood what is friendship, he'd look for it in others. And he also wouldn't want to hurt Fluttershy, indirectly, by doing harm to her friends.

If I was Celestia, he'd a stone statue, inside a dungeon, in the moon of another planet. He is just too dangerous.

I don't think Discord was ever really "evil", nor is he "good" now. Chaos is a force without regard to morality or reason. And if he were as malevolently evil as some folks seem to paint him, I'm pretty sure his first act would have been to boot Celestia from power and Deharmonize all the girls. But he didn't. He didn't even try that trick the second time around. He literally just had as much fun as possible while, in a way, defending himself against a threat. And Discord himself is shown as simply being very childish and incapable of empathizing with others. Heck, his whole realization that he had to change everything back was because he realized it would directly affect him and that he didn't want to lose something he'd never had before.

 

I think the time he spends with Fluttershy and the other ponies will teach him how to relate to others a bit better. I don't think he'll be a totally changed man (spirit...dragon horse...thing), but in the least he'll know how to interact a bit better and maybe have a bit more self-control.

 

I suppose I should add I don't think Discord is just ~misunderstood~. He's a jerk to be sure, and cruel to boot. But these things don't make a being EVIL. They make them an antagonist in the setting of a story, sure, but I feel like the concept of evil as it's being discussed here is a bit much.

Great points. In both episodes, Discord had a lot of time just to tear the world apart and destroy everypony in his way. Hell, with his magic he could have simply sent all the ponies to seperate corners of Equestria and then dethrone Celestia and Luna. With a simple click of his claws, he could wipe all Ponyville off the face of the world but instead he tried to get as many lols as phyiscally possible.
