1000 Years Ago: A Timeline Headcanon

So my friend (astrosheep) and I were talking yesterday and rewatching a couple episodes and we saw the most recent Crystal Kingdom one. That sparked a discussion about how a lot of bad things apparently went down a thousand years ago. We have the Dischord disaster, Nightmare Moon rising, and the Crystal Kingdom falling. We figured out a timeline that all of these events fall into and would like to hear others' opinions!

 

We think Dischord came first, before Luna turned evil, so Celestia and Luna could use the elements of Harmony against him to defeat him. However, before he was turned to stone, he used his magic to plant the seed of evil in Luna, kind of like what he did with the beavers in his most recent episode. That caused Luna to turn into Nightmare Moon, forcing Celestia to lock her sister in the moon. Because of that, when the Crystal Kingdom fell, Celestia couldn't use the Elements to save it and could only watch helplessly.

 

Keep in mind that I've only seen the majority of the episodes once and don't remember everything said about these events. If I've missed something or gotten something wrong, please tell me.

Honestly, I think you're missing just one thing. Luna didn't just turn into Nightmare Moon. After the seed of evil was planted in her, jelousy and hate filled her heart. She wanted to rule above her older sister, but since Celestia knew, she banished her to the moon.

 

Discord was actually the true ruler of Equestria, before Celestia and Luna defeated him. But truthfully, there was really no seed of evil. The jealousy and hate built up on their own. With this, Celestia banished Luna, as Nightmare Moon, to the Moon and somehow, she returned after 1000 years.

The Crystal Empire fell before Luna became Nightmare Moon. As it seems Luna and Celestia used their powers to seal Sombra away in the artic.

I personally think of it more like this.

 

I think its actually been stated that Discord ruled over Equestria before Luna and Celestia got there, so that obviously happened first. Celestia and Luna used the Elements of harmony to defeat Discord, then after that Celestia and Luna went to the Crystal empire and saved it from Sombre, but before this happened Sombre put a curse on it, and I think that Luna also may have gotten a curiosity into dark magic from Sombre.

 

I think between her jealousy of Celestia and the day which the Ponies enjoyed while they didn't spend anytime with her, and the dark magic I think she was eventually consumed by Jealousy and anger and many things and thats when Celestia had to banish her to the moon.

 

Ps. I just realized right now.. Think about how dark of a thing it is to send somebody to the moon.. o-o. For a thousand years. thats a long time.

 

Its possible that they just like 1000 years alot for somereason though, and its possible to just erase the dark magic portion of this whole equation and I think my theory makes sense still.

Oh Celestia, not timelines...

(sigh) Oh well I really don't know but your timeline does make sense. But it doesn't explain how King Sombre was sealed away.

So I think (1) Discord was dethroned and sealed away (2) The Crystal Kingdom fell and King Sombre was sealed away, and (3) Princess Luna became Nightmare Moon and was sealed in the moon.

Also, I just releasied that apparently1000 years ago, sealing up stuff was all the rage. LOL

Princess Luna was still her normal self when the Crystal Empire fell. In the beginning of The Crystal Empire Part 1, when Princess Celestia is explaining it to Twilight, there's a scene showing her and Princess Luna sealing King Sombra away in the ice.

 

Your theory about Discord and Luna is interesting, but, judging by the season 1 opening, I think what happened was that Luna allowed bitterness and jealousy to creep into her heart.

 

Taking Hearths Warming Eve into account, I think a possible timeline could be:

 

Over 1000 years ago:

• Before Princess Celestia and Princess Luna: Ponies not living in harmony
• Vanquishing of the windigos, and the dawn of harmony: the founding of Equestria.
• Discord (I think he comes first, if I remember a phrase used in the season 2 opening correctly) enslaves Equestria
• Princess Celestia and Princess Luna, seeing how unhappy their fellow ponies were defeat Discord, and take their places as rulers of Equestria
• Princess Celestia and Princess Luna seal King Sombra in the ice, Crystal Empire vanishes

 

About 1000 years ago:

• Princess Luna lets bitterness and jealousy creep into her heart, Princess Celestia has to seal her in the moon.

 

About 70-100 years ago:

• Granny Smith and her family found Ponyville, being pointed in the right direction by Princess Celestia

 

About 2 years ago:

• Princess Luna returns as Nightmare Moon
• Mane 6 use the elements of harmony to free her from her state of evil, but Princess Luna makes the final choice to return to good

 

About 1 year ago:

• Discord returns, and is defeated by the mane 6 using the elements of harmony
• Princess Luna begins to adapt to life in the present, learning the ways of kindness
• Queen Chrysalis attempts to enslave Equestria, but is stopped by Princess Cadence and Shining Armor uniting in their love to drive her and her changeling army away

 

Present:

• King Sombra returns. The Crystal Ponies with the help of the mane 6, Princess Cadence, and Prince Shining Armor use the light and love within them to destroy King Sombra for good. Princess Luna appears to have greatly matured since seasons 1 and 2. 
• The emotional/spiritual maturation of Princess Luna is confirmed in Sleepless in Ponyville, when she enters into Scootaloo's dream to help her conquer her fears.
• Princess Celestia allows the mane 6 to use the elements of harmony to release Discord from his prison, and Fluttershy effectively reforms him, bringing him to the side of goodness and light.
