First Vector- Any tips or tricks?

Recommended Posts

I just finished up my first vector, which was suprisingly a lot more challenging than what I expected. I know the ear looks a bit strange and the line width is inconsistent, but other than that, do any of you have any critiques or helpful tips?

Well first it's good if you actually use a transparent background for the vector instead of a white background.

Also, as you said yourself the thickness of the lines are pretty much different everywhere on your vector. Therefore I want to ask which program you used to make the vector. Two more things, the shine in the eyes are not fully round in your vector and there is no iris gradient in the eye.

oh and anyhow, it's good for a first-timer I guess. I remember that I spent half a day making my first vector. Now I make them in around 35 mins

(btw, I looked a bit at your dA, you're a great artist :))

Thank you! & yep, this pretty much took up my entire afternoon. This was the first time I used Inkscape, so I had no clue which settings to mess with in order to make the BG transparent. I also attempted to make a gradient in the iris, but I couldn't figure it out so I just left it as is. I'll keep everything you mentioned in mind next time I do another vector. Thanks again!

This is really good, make sure to make it with a transparent background and fluent line width. But omgird its really good I couldn't do anything like this!

If you need any help or tips, just ask me. I've taught a bunch of people how to vector so I think I should be able to help you. And it's weird, how come the lines are so different in thickness if you used Inkscape? That makes no sense. Do you have a link to the tutorial you used to make this? Or did you figure out how to do everything yourself?

Haha, I have taught about 10 people how to make vectors. I think it's time for me to make a detailed tutorial to post on the forums. Well that's for another day. Today is my birthday, it's 11:22 pm and I need some sleep this night.. I'll leave the work for um.. Tomorrow maybe.

Wow, you must be a pro then! Here's the link to the tutorial I followed on livestram: http://www.livestream.com/ennervateindustries/video?clipId=pla_903ba2b3-881f-47a4-a146-debe5be4ae23&utm_source=lslibrary&utm_medium=ui-thumb

I kind of winged it (haha, puns) when it came to stuff that was confusing or unclear. But I followed the tutorial for the most part.

Oh, and also happy birthday!

How great, my internet connection is so slow so I can't even load the video. I just thought that if the tutorial was made by somepony who makes vectors in a different way than myself, it could explain why all your lines has so different thickness. But I I'll try to make that tutorial. I'll start right now with a few things I guess. And thanks!

I would strongly suggest downloading Ponyscape. Made by Flutterguy317 on Deviant Art. It's an adaption of inkscape, but with tools that make making ponies so much easier. I used to use Inkscape before discovering this and let me tell ya it helps a lot. You can download it here7 I've made plenty of vectors and could help you out with a few pointers if you want. Here you can fine some examples of my work. link

Hey thanks, I did not even know about that little modification myself. It's hard to miss all those community-created stuff you know. There's so much of it.

Oh wow, thanks! I just downloaded it, and I'm watching the tutorial now. Oh, and your vectors look really nice so far :D I'll let you know if I need any help in the future!
