OC or Not: Foals of Canon ponies

Not a Morning Mare

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I'm writing a fanfic that will basically take place about twenty years after the most recent episode (end of season 3) and it involves Pipsqueak and Sweetie Belle (married) as well as their daughter, Tea Leaf. This got me to thinking...

"Hold on a moment. Claims relation to canon ponies... Becomes pivotal in my story... Oh no, this is starting to sound like another terrible OC."

You know the ones, the Mary Sue's and Gary Stu's created by some of the less creative or less literate members of the fandom (I deeply apologize to anyone offended by this phrasology). The overpowered ponies. The "beloved-by-all" ponies. The flat, static ponies. I suppose what I'm worried about is, will Tea Leaf automatically be seen as one of those sorts of ponies because I say she's the offspring of two canon ponies, or, if I write her character well, will she be okay? Do the foals of canon ponies count as bad OC's automatically, or are they something else altogether?

If I'm not articulating my thoughts well, please excuse me; it's late and I'm tired but this idea is nagging at my mind. Thank you for your opinions, anyone who sees fit to respond.smile.png

Well I don't think that because a pony is automatically the offspring of two cannon ponies does that mean you have to have her be a mary sue or Gary stu type character, I think of you do it right it'll be fine.

As long as you still make the character interesting and not have them be overpowered and get everything they want. They'll be fine.

I guess you may run into the fact some people don't like that type of thing where you have two cannon ponies and have an OC be their offspring, but thats not to say that it'll automatically be a mary sue or gary stu.

Thats my opinions atleast. I've read a couple stories with OC's as offsprings of two cannon ponies, and some are actually quite compelling, just remember to give them some flaws and challenges and not have everything handed to them and You'll be good.

Not Necessarily. You can give Tea Leaf some characteristics of Pipsqueak and Sweetie Belle, the good traits and the bad. You could even give some unique traits to Tea Leaf. Try to give Tea Leaf a distinct flaw that isn't overused too much. Anyway, for your question, just because it is the offspring of two canon characters doesn't mean the OC automatically becomes a "Mary Sue" type character. It depends on how you make the character.
