Slide Grease checked that everything was in place; signs pointing to various parts of the house, DJ out back, pool water heated, snacks, and decorations. Urgh. He thought. These decorations are awful. I can't wait to rip all those pink hearts off the walls.

 

He double checked everything, and let the DJ begin playing music out by the pool. He fixed his bowtie and made sure is suit was on right, and walked up to the door, awaiting the first guests. "Showtime." He whispered to himself.

Cascade trotted up to the door nervously. She peered pointedly through the windows on the door, grimacing slightly at the lurid decorations that lined the walls. This was the place, right?

 

She shuffled her wings uncomfortably, and as the thought occurred to her, began to try and tuck them inside the casual dress that she wore, that so beautifully matched her mane, and seemed to ripple like a flowing stream as she walked, yet was light and unintrusive, and rather form-fitting. 

 

Best not to attract attention to her wings tonight. Especially since this was the first time she'd gone to something like this since she'd met her mother.

 

She cast her unpleasant thoughts aside, and knocked on the door with some trepidation. Well, don't worry, Cassie. Things will work out. They always do.

Ocean was standing at the end of the walkway leading to Slide's home. She took a deep breath and walked up to the door...only to find another mare was there.

She decided to be her usual self and stay quiet...she couldn't help but notice this mares wings...she didn't stare but she found them interesting...

Flame was just leaving his trailer. Several of his pal's attempted to call him over to have a drink but he refused and made his way towards Slide's house...it had been a long time since he had seen his friend and he was excited to catch up.

Slide opened the door to see a mare. Yes! I get some alone time with the mare first! A pretty one, too. He smiled, his slicked back mane shining in the moon light. "Hello, my dear. Welcome to my Hearts and Hooves Day Party." He offered his hoof to her to let her inside. "Hopefully you will find your special.somepony tonight." He paused, and then added, "And if not, although Ican't see how such a beatiful mare like yourself isn't taken, but if for some reason the stallions here are too blind to ask you out, I always can have two marefriends tonight," he said, winking.

Cascade almost flinched as another mare walked up behind her. She hadn't managed to tuck her wings out of sight yet, either, and the mare was peeking at them with a curiosity Cascade didn't much like. She didn't say anything, and Cascade wordlessly tucked the wings out of sight just in time for the door to open.

 

The stallion inside didn't seem to notice Ocean, but she took his obligatory hoof anyway, as she trotted inside. She turned slightly pink at his compliment, but couldn't restrain a comment at his next statement. "Wait, what?" she asked, honestly confused.

Ocean jumped slightly as the door opened.

She let out a small sigh as the colt embraced the other mare and brought her inside...as usual, was ignored...she was used to it though. She stepped through the door and stood by the entrance...unsure what to do or say.

"It's all good, my dear." He said before letting her hoof go and walking back up to the door. "Ah! More guests! Flame Dancer my friend, how are you doing?" He asked upon seeing his friend again. He looked behind him to see another mare. "I don't think we've met. Because I'm certain I would have remembered your beatiful eyes. What's your name, my dear?" He asked while ushering them in.

Flame smiled and stepped through the door. "Hey Slide. I'm doing wonderfully thanks, how are you ?" He asked.

 

 

Ocean had been looking down at the ground but looked up as somepony spoke. "Ocean Wind." She said, holding out a hoof to shake Slides.

Having no life to go back to is the most fun thing ever!

Shooting Star stretched all four Hooves on the path to Slide Grease's house as soon as it was in sight, twisting her neck over her withers and tugging with little sparks of magic at the knots she'd tied in her mane to keep them clean. Green, purple, yellow, white and rainbow ribbons, tied until she didn't have anymore hair to work with! She grinned the grin of one who decorates for the act's sake, knowing it serves no real asthetic. She just couldn't help it! She wanted to gussy up for this! And now she was a walking paint palette!

"Kinda' cool, really!" Shoots hoofed up the front steps and took a peak inside--she'd never been to a Hearts and Hooves day party before--well, she might have been, but she didn't REMEMBER having been to one before. Dawn Stripes and Lilly Pool had explained the holiday to her a week ago, and she'd been excited every day since. A day just for spending with special someponies? Or, if you didn't have one, getting to meet one? That sounded so cool!
Especially since she had nothing to worry about except how to make friends tonight. It seemed like a small party to her, Shoots thought as she looked around a pair of talking ponies at the heart-shaped decorations and pink streamers she'd learned to expect. Ten or so ponies had been invited. Something in her head said she was used to a 'party' meaning a least a couple hundred were in attendance.

But you could still have fun with just a few! The ponyville ponies she knew were almost all too busy to come, it seemed; Lyra sounded like she was going on a date, Candyfloss said he was busy at work, and all her friends from Wall Wash Crew were going on a trip to Canterlot to see their families. But Shooting Star? The great part about her life was, she had nothing to worry about. In fact, if she didn't find a special somepony at THIS party, she could probably hit every party that happened for the rest of the week!

Life was good.

 

It would be nice to get inside, but Shooting Star could be patient. She waited until a red-colored colt and a brown colt moved inside before invading the house, bouncing with decorous restraint on the end of her hooves. "Hi!" she eventually squeaked to no one in particular, no longer able to much contain herself, before moving on to the nearest provendered table as a second instinct instructed her to see how many heart-shaped chocolates she could contain.

Cascade was honestly quite surprised to find herself just being cast aside after the guy noticed another mare, but decided not to sulk about it. After all, this bloke was the host of the party, after all. He couldn't exactly ignore the newest arrivals. 

She scanned the snack table, wondering if there was something alcoholic there. Well, she wouldn't partake until later, probably, anyway. She merely stood there rather awkwardly, looking about the house and its lurid decorations.

"I sure hope this isn't too formal a party... I hate black tie... Hopefully I'm not underdressed, but any place I can't wear my soccer jersey and fit in isn't a place I want to be... Besides, the invitation said this was casual, and to have fun, so by Celestia I'm going to do just that! Hopefully there's some cute mares, dating opportunities have been kinda flat lately. How is that even possible in a town where so many of the ponies are female?? Stop overthinking Windy, just do."

 

Mental pondering/reassurance complete, Windy touched down lightly on the doorstep of the location he had been told to come to, and knocked faintly. "Maybe I should knock again louder?" he muttered before the door opened and a brown stallion welcomed him in and introduced himself as Slide Grease. Windy introduced himself, the two shared a hoof bump, and then Windy ventured into the house to check out the party "and the mares!" he thought excitedly.

Ocean noticed that the pony who had spoken to her seemed to be talking to some other blue stallion so she slowly inched away from him...but she accidentally bumped into the same mare by the door. "Oh...sorry." She said, taking a few steps away from the mare.

Heather went up to the house the party was at 'Oh...i don't know if i should be here, i'm not much of a party-er' Heather thought to herself then knocked on the door 'I hope i didn't have to dress up or anything' she thought to herself nervously 'And i really hope nopony makes fun of me because of how i look' Heather wondering why she even came to this party...

The mare didn't seem upset at all at being bumped into. "Oh, no worries," she said. Her voice was light and slightly breathy, reminiscent of gentle waves lapping at the shore.  Her bright blue eyes scanned the blue mare quickly before she extended her hoof, golden like a sunny sand at the beach, or perhaps a piece of caramel. "I'm Cascade, by the way."

She pondered Ocean's question for the shortest second before replying, "I... work with the water a lot of the time... Take care of fish... Clean pools... Collect seaweed for potioneers... a lot of stuff like that... You?" Her speech had the faintest touch of awkwardness in it, although the source was nothing to do with with who it was she was talking to.

"Well..." Cascade's conversation with Ocean was interrupted by a new colt, and she turned, remarkably unabashedly as compared to the mare beside her, to talk to the new conversant. He was kinda cute, but not quite a 10/10 would date. Maybe a seven. Or a six and a half.

 

"Well, you wouldn't have seen me, would you have? I rarely come out this way. I actually live on a lake up in the mountains surrounding Canterlot. I'm Cascade, by the way," she added, almost as an afterthought.

Ocean's eyes widened at those last few words...by Canterlot ? No way.

She opened her mouth as if to say something but realized that she could be interrupting so she closed her mouth and just stayed quiet, shuffling her hooves and glancing out the window.

   Ginger Snap sluggishly walked up to the door and fastened his bow tie and removed his tricorn hat before knocking on the door with his right hoof. He was quite thirsty from the walk up here and his mouth was already watering for the taste of some sweet, and sugary cider. He wondered if he would see anypony he knew here.

Slide greeted the new ponies and left the door open for all the other guests. There are way too many of them now. Besides, that ruins my chances with the fillies, hanging around here! He thought. He then began to walk over to the two fillies he talked to earlier, only to see that some other colt had beaten him to it.

Windy watched as one of the mares became silent when he spoke. His face almost instantly began to glow bright red at his lack of tact. "Damn Windy, you just interrupted her in the most rude way you could! Atleast my coat doesn't let them see how much I'm blushing. Why do you always do this to yourself? Me and my big mouth..."

Windy grabbed onto Cascade's polite response like a drowning pony to a lifeboat. "Oh, you live in the mountains Cascade? That's really cool, it must be picturesque up there! So I suppose you like being near nature?" 

 

"Great, I'm going to start rambling like a doof if I'm not careful, and blow it with not just one, but TWO mares in under a minute! Must be some kind of Equestria record... Focus!"

 

So you say you live on a lake? What do you do there, do you fish?
