Windy watched as one of the mares became silent when he spoke. His face almost instantly began to glow bright red at his lack of tact. "Damn Windy, you just interrupted her in the most rude way you could! Atleast my coat doesn't let them see how much I'm blushing. Why do you always do this to yourself? Me and my big mouth..."

Windy grabbed onto Cascade's polite response like a drowning pony to a lifeboat. "Oh, you live in the mountains Cascade? That's really cool, it must be picturesque up there! So I suppose you like being near nature?"

"Great, I'm going to start rambling like a doof if I'm not careful, and blow it with not just one, but TWO mares in under a minute! Must be some kind of Equestria record... Focus!"

So you say you live on a lake? What do you do there, do you fish?

"Grrrr... Windy you're blowing it man, there you go rambling again! I just can't seem to get anything coherent or meaningful out of my mouth! Hm... I know! A little liquid luck ought to turn my evening around!"

Turning back to Cascade, and now blushing hard enough that he was sure she could see even in the low light and through his tan coat, Windy muttered, "Hey Cascade, I'm kinda thirsty. I'm gonna go get a drink. Talk to you later, ok?" and he scampered away to the refreshment table, repeatedly mentally kicking himself for his tactlessness.

It would be nice to get inside, but Shooting Star could be patient. She waited until a red-colored colt and a brown colt moved inside before invading the house, bouncing with decorous restraint on the end of her hooves. "Hi!" she eventually squeaked to no one in particular, no longer able to much contain herself, before moving on to the nearest provendered table as a second instinct instructed her to see how many heart-shaped chocolates she could contain.

Pouring himself a hefty mug of cider, and pouring in some Applejack Daniels, because there simply is no kill like overkill, Windy thought, "This ought to turn my luck around!" and took a substantial gulp, then turned to the table next to his. What he saw at that table made him nearly spit out his mouthful of cider, which would have been quite a shame too, because it would have gone all over one of the prettiest fillies Windy had ever laid eyes on. "By Celestia, she's gorgeous! That mane... Those green eyes... Forget those other ponies, this is the filly I want to be my special somepony! But what should I do? Ah! She's looking at me now! Act casual!" Windy proceeded to look away in the most un-casual and unsubtle way possible, which pretty much broadcast he had been looking at the mare, and had been caught. "Uh oh! She's coming this way! What do I do? What should I say? I know! I'll go for the old tried and true! This can't fail!"

"Hi there, happy Hearts and Hooves Day! My names Windy Runner, what's yours?" "Who said I had to say anything complicated?" Windy thought to himself, chuckling at how much he had panicked initially. "That's it, I'm done over-thinking everything. Time to act, not think, and more importantly, get to get to know this beautiful mare in front of me!

(I'm a bit late.)

I walked outside, pondering about what I should do, who I should meet. I finally decided go sit by the pool and just wait, and think.

"I should've brought some paint, or something." I thought. I have never been to a party before. Mind you, I've barely been outside my house before. I just sat there and thought about..... Life.

Stroming Star's dive from a large cloud was anything but graceful. His nose stung after he hit the dirt and his wings cramped up, but the pain was a usual pain and it disappeared as swiftly as it came. The house the party was being held at was as he imagined it, it looked comfortable enough but the amount of decor put up for the event was almost overwhelming. It didn't look like a home at all in fact... but that didn't matter, the party was what mattered. He didn't need a clock now to know that he was late, always was. A sigh was all he could use to express his torment, but after shaking his head he was able to conjure a light smile. He might still have a chance at meeting someone here! Someone who liked him...! Or maybe just someone who would tolerate him... He already started to day dream and soon realized he had been standing outside of the house. The event was clearly indicated on a sign outside, and he could already hear the muffled conversations between mares and colts. As slyly as he could, he slid through the door and walked with a wall, trying not to be seen until he found the host or hostess.

A few glances were made between him and everypony else, but no one took enough notice to introduce themselves. In fact, it seemed as if everyone had already found a special somepony... er, it was all in his head. Interrupting his nervous lean against a wall, he tried to be more visible. His nervous smile became a smirk and his posture was improved, but after letting out a timid, "Hello everypony, I'm... stormingstar" his anxiety returned. It was too quiet for anyone to hear. Even with the new realization that there were few ponies at the party, he let out another exaggerated sigh. It would be best to sit and read until someone showed interest, so he waited.

(OOC: Shooting star is 18. Just to make sure that's clear).

(OOC: Post was made in a hurry. Making a couple small edits, sorry if I confused you, Joltean. She was trying to talk to Poppy)

A greeting tore Shooting Star away from her snacks, and a wide dark tongue wrapped skillfully (and rather tactlessly) around the edges of her muzzle to clean away any remaining bits of chocolate.

Shoots grinned as she finally saw somepony she'd at least exchanged a couple words with before.

"Shooting Star! Nice to meet you, too."

Skip ahead several minutes and a couple short conversations with other ponies, she was a couple gallop-lengths away at the outside snack table, tossing a cupcake the way of Wind Runner.

"Nice to finally get your name. So, like, what is a Pinkie Promise?"

The mare in bows was just about ready to hum in response to all the conversation--more than that--the pleasant buzz that started at the base of her horn was filling her from eartips to hooves as the other guests trickled in. Shoots wasn't consciously aware of the fact that, as a raging extrovert, her drug of choice was giving her far more energy than any of the sugar she'd just consumed. All she knew was that there were smiling faces all around, and she was happy. As the little house started to feel its holding capacity, the decorations took on a new life, and the music began to distort as it wobbled its way around the coats of partgoers like the meekest guests. The warm but tender press of equine flesh from all directions...colors flashing constantly at the corner of her eye...this was her element.

With such exuberance to spare, Shoots began employing a skill that she neither previously knew she posessed, nor remembered how she'd obtained it. The ability to hold several conversations at once with ponies in close proximity must have made some sense--if there were a hundred ponies at a party, Shoots figured, she'd have to do something like that.

According to Starswirl XVII's partially-accepted treatise on quantum theory, each pony is in fact a wave in addition to being a particle body, and Shoots was at the moment best expressed as a wave. The probably of measuring her position at any given point could not be predicted and was completely independent of her position an instant prior, and her position could not be measured simultaneously with the velocity of the words that spilled out of her muzzle in full-on mingle mode.

Life.

There was a white mare with a drooping rainbow mane waiting by the pool. Some internal radar made Shooting Star lock in on anything that looked alone, and bobbed up besides her on a floating chair.

"Hi there! Cool party, isn't it? So like, what are you doing sitting all the way out here by yourself?"

@@Glaceon,

Cascade gave Ocean a blank, disbelieving stare, before uttering, "How... How do you know about my sand castle?" She looked the mare up and down once. She didn't seem the type to be out adventuring, trudging about in the woods, or else just living out in the middle of nowhere. Although, she decided, she probably wouldn't think that about herself, either.

Ocean smiled. "I knew I knew you from somewhere. You know that tiny little cottage at the other end of the lake ? That's my home...I must say, you are one skilled swimmer." She said, looking at where Cascade's wing's would be...they were covered by her dress so she just looked back up. "That is quite a special talent."

A mare with orange fur, and a pale lavender mane walked up to me.

"Hi there" she said. "Cool party isn't it? So like, what are you doing sitting all the way out here by yourself?"

"Hi, i'm Poppy. I guess the party is pretty cool. I'm not very social, so thanks for coming over here or I would have spent the party all by myself." I answered.

I saw a brown mare with no cutie mark walking past.

"Poppy, you need to learn to be more social, and your going to." I thought. As she walked up to another pony I decided to at least say hi. I smiled and waved at her. I don't think she saw me though.

@,

Storm jumped from his reading immediately, and the book he had been reading landed on his face. He awaited the image of a pony but was left with... words? After shaking the book off and catching it clumsily with his hooves, the voice was revealed to have come from a brown mare with a shy face like his. He looked around to see if anypony else might have said something. "Oh... m-me? Storming Star? Well, n-... wait, yes! That would be me, nice to meet you umm... Heather." His grey face turned slightly crimson as he blushed, trying to cover his face with the book and still make eye contact. Unfortunately, neither worked. He looked at the floor and babbled like an idiot. Was he this shy around mares, or was he just surprised someone actually spoke to him? He brushed a hoof across his mane in an attempt to comb it down and took a breath, his chest visibly growing with the air.

"You'll... have to forgive me. I'm just not so used to anyone approaching me, especially..." His voice trailed off in a mumble. Resuming his shy face he rubbed the ground with a hoof, looking at it steadily. If he could take his mind off of the party he could... no, there was someone standing right in front of him. His eyes met with the mare unwillingly and as much of a smile as he could conjure was revealed, but it was only slight.

(OOC: 'Earlier' means @Windy Runner still stands several minutes in chronology after this. Yes, I split time as a convenience measure. It's called a flashback. I like to live dangerously.)

Earlier:

@Shooting Star

It wasn't quite what Shoots Star needed to hear.

"Not very..." She crossed her forelegs in a gesture no doubt intended to be disarmingly demure, but which nearly upended her into a chlorinated drink. She would later learn that ponies did not do well with the demure leg-cross. "Well, that can't be very much fun."

The more the merrier--Shoots took a quick look around and noticed another mare giving her a small wave. She left a small splash on the pool---she was halfway away before it occurred to her that SHE might not have been the target of the wave. Either way, there were ponies who could use it more than she could.

"Come on, silly filly! Time to meet some friends!" If a certain rainbow-maned mare was paying close attention, she would have felt an entirely uninhibited nose digging into her side, and a muzzle forcing itself underneath her settled belly, as Shoots prepared to carry her halfway across the length of the yard on her back. It was where the conversation was, after all. Made perfect sense at the time.

After a minute or so of silence, Storming Star chuckled. "You said your name was weird? Heather sounds pretty normal to me... j-just listen to mine. STORMINGSTAR. Stor-ming-star. Stars don't storm, in fact they stay in place. Even shooting stars are just meteors, so I think my name gets the 'weird' title.'" He blushed again and looked down when he realized his voice had raised and he had been smiling. Looking confident was his worst fear, he hated when people expected anything of him. "Even if Heather is an uncommon name, you certainly seem much more normal than me." Storm pictured himself with a messy mane and remembered, his dirty nose, and quickly brushed and shook himself until he felt clean.

Aww. Shooting Star smiled wildly, bouncing her green bow with one hoof. "You don't remember who asked? I talked to you at the May Masquerade Party about a week ago, where was it, Sugarcube Cornstalk? Something like that."

She tapped her chin with a hoof. "I tend to pay a lot of attention to ponies at parties. Come to think of it, the whole masquerade thing doesn't make much sense. Who invented that? You can tell who everypony is just fine as long as you can see their manes and cutie marks like that." She downed a candy heart and shrugged. "I guess some ponies like to pretend!"

Shooting Star continued to exist in a high energy state. But as the minutes of the party tumbled over each other like overeager griffon cubs, even Shoots noticed her probability cloud begin to collapse closer and closer to the brown pegasus. For some reason, she kept coming back to glance at him and hear him talk whenever she was even remotely close. There must have just been something about him; maybe he just had interesting things to say? His muscular legs moved in a way that was, somehow, very interesting whenever he shifted his weight around the spot he held like a hard-won piece of battleground, and he always had the dopiest-looking smile on his face whenever Shoots looked. He had a good color, too, she decided--nothing fancy or rare, but he reminded her of an enormous brownie with just a drizzle of caramel sauce on top.

That made her burst out laughing right in front of him, and she had to bury her face in both forelegs to keep from losing it. All I need to do is put some ice cream on top of him and I'm all set!

"Sometimes I feel it would be nice to be different." Storm turned to his flank and glanced at his cutie mark, one of the only things he felt proud about. "Then again, I guess we are all different in some ways." His stomach growled surprisingly loudly, and his jaw lulled as he spotted a table of food and candy. Would it be a good idea to leave? He knew he hadn't eaten for a few hours, but leaving the conversation would be rude and his large appetite might make him consume an awkward amount of food. Another growl reassured him, as if it were consciously yelling at him. "Please... excuse me. I'm just... really hungry. You are welcome to join me at the food table but..." His last words faded as he let his eyes meet the ground again as he spun and walked to the table. The assortments of treats and baked goods almost made his mouth water. Without acknowledging anyone else near the table, he began to chow down on all he could. He ate quickly, but still in an unsure enough way that he looked somewhat polite.

There must have just been something about him; maybe he just had interesting things to say? That made her burst out laughing right in front of him, and she had to bury her face in both forelegs to keep from losing it. All I need to do is put some ice cream on top of him and I'm all set!

Chuckling lightly, Windy put his face in his hoof, and smiled, "Oh course! How could I have forgotten a pony with such a distinct mane? I honestly prefer this party type of party though, I mean, I love the big parties with five hundred of my closest friends as much as the next stallion, but these smaller, simpler parties are a lot more fun, because you can really get to know the people at them in a much more... personal way. Its hard to hold a meaningful conversation with any one pony when there are hundreds of others you want to also talk to, you know? But here, there's a much better chance for some good interaction..."

As was his custom, Windy made several circuits of the party, meeting and greeting the other mares and stallions around, but somehow he kept running back into the orange filly with the lavender mane and the striking green eyes. Ok, so maybe it wasn't him inadvertently running into her again each time so much as it was him timing it so their paths would cross... But who could blame him? She was striking in appearance, and had a graceful carelessness Windy was drawn to like a parasprite to Pinkie Pie's music. She just had a way of lighting up the air around he with a tangible energy that made the room seem brighter than it was. The more he looked at her, the less he saw the other mares...

After meeting up for what must have been the third or fourth time, Windy hadn't even said anything when Shooting Star (or Shoots as he had quickly learned she preferred to be called by) began bursting out laughing, even though he hadn't said a thing.

"Uh oh! What did I do?? Do I have something in my mane? Or did I spill cider on my jersey without knowing it? What could it be? NO. Act casual Windy, act like you couldn't be more calm. Have a chocolate, or a drink of cider, or something to play it off! There, just grab that cream pastry there and eat that! There you go... Oh you doofus, you didn't eat the darned thing, you used it to color your face white! How much cider have you had??"

@,

"I normally wish that i was moreee...well normal, i'm so plain, no cool colors, no cutie mark..." Heather said looking down at the ground then looking at her blank flank. Heather herd Storm's stomach growl then he said how he was hungry "Sounds like it" Heather said giggling shyly. She watched as Storm went to the snack table and wondered if she should join him, after a little wile she decided she was hungry too and went over to where Storm was "Hey, i was hungry too!" Heather said looking at all the good snacks

Storm looked over at the familiar voice and down at the table to see that he had eaten much more than he had intended. "S-sorry, wasn't paying attention..." He wiped his mouth with a hoof and leaned against a wall next to the table. His eyes met with Heather again, observing her for a moment before he spoke. "I don't mean any offense, but do you know the reason for your... erm... blank flank? Some ponies theirs later than others, but none are..." None were so old, which made Storming Star wonder how old she was. He was twenty three... twenty three!? Most of the ponies walking around looked to be twenty at most, he felt immediately out of place. "Nevermind. Finding your talent takes time."

Storming Star realized another pony across the table getting a drink. He wanted to greet him, maybe they had something in common too...! It was unlikely, so he nodded simply and coughed into his wing. He wanted a way out, he shouldn't be here. Even if he was only a bit older than everypony. What could he do to escape without seeming strange? "Uh..." He spun to face Heather again. "My... job... I'm late for my shift. It's supposed to shower later, and..." He didn't want to leave since he had met somepony, but relationships wouldn't be built much with anypony else. A cringe appeared on his face as he inched slowly towards the exit, his posture as poor as ever and his neck slouched.

Shooting Star's tail quivered, prone on the floor, before she could muster the self-collectedness to pick herself back up. Windy Runner had dabbed his face with white; now he looked like he had a good topping of powdered sugar or whipped cream!

"You just get tastier and tastier," she muttered to herself, then took a deep breath and stood straight. The DJ hadn't turned on that kind of music yet, after all. She could get a grip on herself.

Handsome. The word popped into her head with the sudden-ness of a sparking stadium light as the last fuse failed. Windy Runner is handsome. That was what she kept noticing, her brain pointed out, and summarily patted itself on the back on congratulation.

After smiling back at him with a grin that just maybe was starting to look like his, Shooting Star was struck with an absurd and--to her--utterly random desire to get a better look at Windy's wings.

Maybe it was because she didn't have a lot of pegasus friends at the moment?

They were clamped tightly to his sides at the moment, though. And with an indoors party, there were no convenient reasons for him to flare them. It wasn't like she wanted him to take off and leave her behind on the ground anyway, she just wanted--Discord hang her if she knew what it was she wanted.

No problem. Just get him excited. Shooting Star scanned the party for exciting things, noting what Windy had been paying attention to; there were some other mares, like those blue ones...the cider he'd been downing all night for some reason...but none of those things had really gotten the pegasus excited.

Maybe if I jump out and scare him? No, that was stupid. She didn't want to make him mad, after all. And she doubted she could startle him for more than half a second. He was so...sturdy.

I know! Shooting Star took a quick peek at the pegasus' cutie mark--that was completely fine in company, wasn't it?--and formed her plan, which, without the least bit of deliberation as to whether said plan was actually a good idea, put it into execution.

What was that cutie mark about? She could have sworn he mentioned it at the masquerade...soccer, that was it! The words came back to her.

"So...."

She spun in a half circle, coming back around to face the stallion. "Your cutie mark. It's really cool and all. But I had a question. Why do you wear soccer cleats over hooves?"

She mentally crossed her ears for luck. Now, if she just got him talking enough...

@,

Heather saw as Storm had a bunch of food in his mouth and giggled a bit "That's alright..." Heather said shyly then listened to what he was saying next. "Oh, well-" Heather was beginning to talk about her blank flank when Storm interrupted "Y-yea i guess" Heather said then saw him turn around and turn back to say something "A-alright.." Heather said disappointed that he was leaving "W-well bye, uh..nice meeting you" Heather said then looked back at the snack table and sighed 'Sounds like he just didn't want to talk to me...' Heather thought to herself
