Bigmethod 239 April 15, 2013 Share April 15, 2013 Hello all, before i start up on this i just want to say that i'll appreciate any comment, and if you don't like reading a lot, then skip down to the end and read the final paragraph or two. Reading it back, i will concede that it is very long, so i do apologize profusely you do not have to read it all by any means, however, if you are obliged, can you please read the final paragraph which has a couple questions in it? Thank you. - Bigmethod Ok, well, i don't really know how to start this right now, to be honest, i didn't even know much about this show until... 3 days ago? I just knew that some people enjoy it, some kids some adults, and this didn't really bother me, as i don't like to judge people (thanks parents). And this is how it was until about a week ago, where i was talking with a few friends via xbox chat, and they introduced me to someone they met. This guy that i met was just around 18 and was perhaps the nicest people ever, to the point where you question whether he is just tugging your tail or something (see what i did there?). I talked with him for a while, and we became what i would call friends, so after what had to be a few days he mentions that he is a "brony". I had absolutely no idea what the heck he was talking about, so i went to work, came back, noticed i had some time so i jumped on and we talked a bit again. We played some games, talked etc. then again, he mentioned it, and i said laughing, "what's that?" and he told me. I have to be honest, this was sorta strange, and while he was explaining I was perplexed and honestly, kind of weird-ed out but i tried as hard as i can not to judge him, because, after all he was an extremely nice person. The reason i say this is because, although i'm not extremely popular or anything of that nature, back when i was at school, i was the typical "hey dude, lets go play some football," guy so i guess when i heard about this pony stuff i was just a little set back. So he told me about it, and i was honestly extremely curious about what this was, so he explains why he liked it, and why people call themselves "bronies" (if thats how you spell that). So after a few days of just work and stuff (boring) something sparked in my cluttered mind again. (ACTUAL STUFF STARTING NOW) So, myself being someone who now spends a lot of time on the computer, i went to youtube and looked up this brony occupation, i found this video that entailed the history of the show and why it is so enjoyable amongst adults. I watched it with an open mind, and came out being ridiculously curious. Infact, for the next day (especially while working), all that occupied my mind was this tv show, which was meant for kids. Honestly, I was trying to block it out, i really didn't want to even acknowledge it, but this curiosity... OH BOY was it bothersome. So i rushed home from work, entered my apartment, sat down on my (absurdly comfortable) leather couch, went on youtube, and looked up the first episode and watched it. Right away i could see the resemblance to shows such as "Dexter's Laboratory", animation wise. And i got to say, that was some nostalgic stuff, i kinda chuckled cause i was starting to understand why so many adults enjoy this show. After i finished the episodes (as i recall it was a 2-parter), i laughed to myself and took a shower. Whilst bathing myself, i noticed that my curiosity was still not quenched, in fact, it was increased, did i just enjoy this children's program? I mean it had ponies! I was perplexed. So then i sat down and watched the entire first season... and quite frankly, i really enjoyed it for the most part (I still find things such as the theme 'song' and some of the episodes to really test my feelings about what i am doing, as ridiculous as that may sound to some of you.) (Re-cap) So i have to say, oddly enough, and i never, in a million years did i think i would thoroughly enjoy a show like this. And after every episode i didn't (or don't) feel that my curiosity was (or is) being quenched. So yes, i do enjoy the show, in fact, i think its very fun to watch. So here is my question, and perhaps, my overly long introduction, how was this for you? How did you find something like this? Because i'm someone who finds sports marketing, call of duty, and football entertaining, and i'm sure i'm not the only one who was shocked to be enjoying this show. The people that i have seen, whether they be in the comments sections, or in the forums, were extremely nice, and i don't know if its because of this show, or just because it attracts generally nice people or what, but it did, and still does perplex me. And lastly, i'm frightened to talk to my friends about any of this, in fact, i don't believe i ever will. I don't know... maybe its because i've always been a bit stranger than them (stranger is not the correct word for that), but i know that i will be criticized, and i've known these people for over ten years. I really do appreciate the nice people that have been breeding here, has anyone run into these sorts f troubles? How did you deal with them? I'm terribly sorry for this long post, you did not have to read it all, but if you did, or did not, i appreciate you stopping by. (Random facts that i figured out) Now that i do enjoy the show i can say... My favorite pony is hands down : Fluttershy (great personality, super adorable, etc.) Also, I have yet to watch the rest of the seasons Overall, although i still do find my ( maybe love?) for this show to be strange (for myself), i am more curious about why the people who enjoy this show are so kind? Especially with the criticism flying their way, i've always tried to be nice (not always successfully , so if i offended anyone i do apologize, but you all see extremely nice and that's something really refreshing. Thank you, and have a good day.
Garrett Johnson 57 April 15, 2013 Share April 15, 2013 The show in general is just all around happy, so people who actually watch and enjoy the show tend to be friendly. Also this is the friendliest place on the internet
Lunapals 13 April 15, 2013 Share April 15, 2013 Well I read the whole thing and you have been through a lot and I did pretty much the same thing but one thing for me was the fact that I was trying to find a picture of the colored horse from wizard of oz but I started the video and ended up watching 27 hours of mlp HI! Dusty Soul 2,611 April 15, 2013 Share April 15, 2013 I read through and I'm glad you gave it a chance. The reason the fandom is so nice is that the qualities of the show make an impact on some peoples lives. Also welcome to the forums and hope you enjoy season which was my favorite season. eightbithoof 518 April 15, 2013 Share April 15, 2013 What you describe is pretty much part-and-parcel how I came to the show, change only the names and places to protect the judgmental - from themselves. This is, by far, the friendliest forum I've ever seen and I think that that is in every way a result of the show that influenced it. MLP:FiM is thematically centered on the ideals of love and acceptance. Ideas that everypony has a special talent, everypony has a destiny and that everypony can help/contribute/make a difference are thick throughout all the seasons. It's a well animated, uplifting show with an open, friendly and dynamic fan community. What's not to like? As for your questions: sadly, I struggle with the same issues. I've not told any of my friends or family that I am a Brony, even though I love the show and the fan content to the point that I started drawing again specifically to draw Ponies. All I can do is with you luck. Who knows? Maybe your friends will surprise you with their acceptance. Bigmethod 239 April 15, 2013 Author Share April 15, 2013 Agreed, its just there is so many "bad" rumors flying around this show, that it is hard to convince them of anything.
Urkelbot 63 April 15, 2013 Share April 15, 2013 I'm really glad you gave the show a shot, and enjoyed it. Myself, I've always been a very open minded dude, and have tried to surround myself with like minded people. When I heard about the show, I was totally willing to give it a shot, and I loved it. This was probably not as big an issue for me, since I was already in my mid 20's when I began watching. That being said, I can relate to you to a certain extent. when I was in High school I used to watch... *sigh* Sailor Moon. ( Gimme a break, It was some of the only available anime! I would have been around 14 or so at the time, and I didn;t know what drew me to the show, or why I enjoyed it so much, I just did. I didn't really tell a lot of people at first. Teenage guys aren't supposed to watch cartoons about girls with talking cats who fight inane monsters every day, and go to the mall in their downtime. I liked the characters and the style. I liked the show, and that was good enough for me.Eventually I became less embarrassed and self conscious about it, Anyone who gives you a hard time about something you enjoy is, as of yet, unenlightened, and not to be given too terribly much thought. so in closing, You can like what you like. It's okay. You don't have to flaunt it, but you needn't feel so confused or ashamed. This will come in time I hope I haven't Babbled to long... I'm a' tell you who's best pony, by da hour. Just like Rosie O'Donnell at a Bisexual Bridal Shower.

MyLittlePonyTales 273 April 15, 2013 Share April 15, 2013 I really do appreciate the nice people that have been breeding here, has anyone run into these sorts f troubles? How did you deal with them?So in regards to pretty much EVERYTHING you said above... you are part of like 75% of the fandom. It's totally normal to be wary about talking to your friends, to be 'in the closet', as it were, about liking ponies. And that's totally fine, dude. I know so many guys that would call themselves masculine, and then they're like... but I like this show, and it feels weird because I'm a manly man! But I don't think liking FiM makes you any less of a man or person. You like what you like, and nobody should judge you for that. If you're unsure about telling people you know in real life that you watch this show, that's totally cool. There are so many people I know who feel the same way you do. You're totally not alone. "Reality is a lovely place, but I wouldn't want to live there."

skysweep 541 April 15, 2013 Share April 15, 2013 reading all of the posts so far, just want to share my thoughts. From what i have seen, the main reasons why people tell their friends and family they are bronies is either: 1. Friends and family found out about their interests or caught them in the act. 2. They discover that some of their friends are capable of being bronies or are bronies. So there is no need to worry. And about the haters, some hate just simply to disguise the fact that they are bronies too. Take it from me, that was my way of dealing with the new, uncommon interest. But i got over it when others brought me into the fandom. And those who call it childish? Here's a quote that will help. "When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up." C.S Lewis, Influential Novelist, writer of the "Chronicles of Narnia." Therefore, don't worry about the hate. Even a famous novelist would have said you are more of a man than they are. In fact he would say they have "A mark of really arrested development." (Sorry about the long post.)

Civil Sunset 54 April 16, 2013 Share April 16, 2013 (edited) Yes, as other people have told you before, lots of us share those problems. For you to explain it all like that has opened up my eyes a bit more. I did have some confusing feelings about it and you just pretty much threw them out there (Which is a very good thing) and that has me agreeing with everything that's the show is about. Nostalgia, but that everyone is equal and special in their own right. I'm afraid to tell my friends as well, PLUS my brother doesn't like the show either. (He watched Season 1 and 2, still hates it. Only watched it so he can legitimately bash it.) So, from me to you, continue to watch the show if you really like it. Never let those people get to you and I'm going to try to do the the same, even though I'm quite a softie.. I love it and the show only gets better and helps me realize my feelings torward my friends. (Sheesh, I cried a few times.) If you ever want to talk, I'm always here to lend an arm to my fellow pony. You don't have to hide anything.. Edited April 16, 2013 by Civil Sunset
