they started around the 1650s and the uniforms were out of use at the end-ish of the 19th century..

 

they were red so--> soldiers could see their allies through thick gunpoower smoke

                         --> blood wsnt easily seen and allies werent demoralised

 

disbanded due to the fact that it actually made them more visible to the enemy and smoke wasnt that common on battlefields any more)
