planning Bioshock-based RP (With ponies, of course)

Recommended Posts

919: Griffon kingdom is in the midst of a violent revolution. Several citizens flee the country.

945: Equestria sends forces to assist in the revolution. This is an outrage to Industrialist Griffon Andrew Ryan, who strongly approved of the empire's old government.

946: Several of the worlds finest minds disappear.

955: Reports of a strange lighthouse coming from sailors.

960: Passenger ship disappears under mysterious circumstances.

So, yeah. This is Bioshock 1, but with ponies, and with substantially less technology. The whole "ponification process" needs a lot of refining, (Hence; planning) so feel free to leave any suggestions as to how Rapture can be fully integrated into the mythos of Equestria. For example, I'm not sure how plasmids would be significant in a world filled with unicorns, and just naming the founder "Andrew Ryan" In the ponified version is pretty lame. One last thing; we're NOT just going to do what Atlas says the whole time. I'm going to let the OCs carry the plot, because otherwise, it'd be pretty bland and boring.

RULES:

1. If you're going to use an alicorn, you better have a good reason.

2. This is primarily an adventure, not action. Most of this should be focused on the OC's interactions with each other, and Rapture. If you really need to go punch up some splicers, that's okay, but the entire RP is not going to be describing in great detail how your OC wrenches some plasmid junkie.

3. Shipping is fine, but don't overdo it.

4. NO LEMONS. Hope I don't have to explain that one.

5. Know what Rapture is, and how it works in general.

Please, suggest more rules or features. So... Who's up for it?

hmmm....would big daddies be NPCs or actual OCs? They're vital to rapture so they have to be included somehow. Which also raises the same question for little sisters....

Also, this sounds amazing and I want in. I'll begin work on an OC (can he be a griffin? I'm in a griffin phase right now).

(A griffon would be great.)

I think the big daddies should be NPCs. Most of the OCs will have come from the shipwreck, and I only expect one or two to actually start in rapture. I guess the drills could be head mounted, like a horn. Interesting...

Anyway, same with the little sisters. Unless someone wants to wait for another OC to rescue a little sister, and take control of the filly, I don't see how a PC little sister would be feasible.

I think head-mounted drills would look a little...odd. Might I suggest side-mounted instead? We need some villains too (i.e. Dr. Steinman, Sander Cohen)

Side-mounted it is. Okay, so Steinman and Cohen both came from Manehattan.

dunno where Tenembaum would come from though...

First question, are we following the plot of Bioshock 1 or is it a different adventure that has nothing to do with Jack?

It might be best if this RP takes place before or during Rapture's civil war, that would leave place for lots of character interactions and less action.

Second question...can players be canon characters? OCs are fine, but roleplaying as one of the canon characters sound incredibly awesome (Sofia Lamb and Tenenbaum are at the top of my list).

what if the RP took place right before and during the civil war? That could be kind of cool. For example, all of the characters could spend an in-game week getting ready for a new year's party (or planning the revolution, depending on which side your on) and then all hell breaks lose January 1, 1959!

Sounds great! Let's do that.

I don't have a problem with you using a cannon character. I'm not going to, because I'm always afraid that I'm misrepresenting the character, but you can.

This is kind of a given, but I think it should be required for joining members to study/know the history of rapture and how it works.

Indeed, here are a few relevant links from the wiki:

Rapture

Rapture Storyline

Rapture Civil War

New Year's Eve Riots

I think I'll go with Tenenbaum, Lamb is tempting but she has a bunch of followers and too much influence, that would be god moding.

Welcome to Rapture! Look forward to seeing you. While choosing an OC, keep in mind that Rapture was a very very top-heavy society, so not many middle-lower class citizens are living there.

While choosing an OC, keep in mind that Rapture was a very very top-heavy society, so not many middle-lower class citizens are living there.

Actually there was a pretty big number of lower-class people in Rapture, that's how the war started. People realised that Rapture wasn't the utopia that Andrew Ryan promised, and Fontaine exploited their discontent to recruit them for his rebel army.

Quoting from the wiki:

Rapture did not collapse in a single day, as there was a long chain of events that made the Civil War possible. From the outset, the Ryanist philosophy created a "law of the jungle" based society in which the strong thrived and the weak were left to their fate. In a highly stratified society such as Rapture with high levels of inequality between the rich and poor, a substantial amount of class conflict was inevitable, especially when so many left behind lucrative careers on the surface to live out a utopia several fathoms under the sea. Frank Fontaine saw this more clearly than most when he remarked "These sad saps. They come to Rapture, thinking they're gonna be captains of industry. But they all forget that somebody's gotta scrub the toilets."

I'm trying to figure out how to ponify Tenenbaum's backstory, since Equestria has no equivalent to the nazi's medical experiments. Maybe we could rework the griffin kingdom revolution to include more ponies and say that Tenenbaum grew up in the middle of it.

Also, how do we handle plasmids for the players? Obviouly we shouldn't be over-spliced, most characters could start without any plasmids or only one, and be able to get a couple more over the course of the RP.

Okie dokie lokie I have a few ideas on the ponification of Rapture.

1) First of all, consider another name. Not that Rapture is automatically out of place, but something like "Elysium" or "Paradise" just sounds like it would fit into the mythos even better.

2) The Little Sisters get transplanted into "Little Fillies" and may even resemble the CMC in design, same basic idea though. They harvest the phlebotinum from corpses.

3) Big Daddies become "Big Brothers." Again, same basic idea. The name coming from a play off of Shining Armor and Big Macintosh's role. Which, makes the "Little Fillies" make even more sense. They already would associate them with protection!

Physically, I would think the best idea would be for them to resemble a powerfully built pony like Big Mac, Shining Armor, or even Horse Power. (Fittingly, that's one example from each subspecies.) Another possibility is for them to be Alicorns. Not natural ones certainly, but almost Frankenstein-ian horrors. Horn-drills mounted atop freakishly large heads and leathery, fin-like wings for underwater travel and shielding from spells, blows, and bullets. In fact, their artificial nature can almost be a sort of stealthy jab at OC Alicorns. After all, aren't most spotlight stealing, monstrously powerful, yet supposedly sympathetic, juggernauts already?

4) ADAM = POX: Think of the plant "Heart's Desire" from the episode The Cutie Pox. ADAM was discovered and refined by Brigid Tenenbaum when a sea slug bit a dock worker and healed his crippled arm. Who's to say a cousin of Heart's Desire doesn't also grow on the bottom of the ocean? It would also be fitting if the person who discovers it in this version is a Zebra mare who, like Zecora, is an expert in herbal alchemy. What POX does is give cutie-marks and immediate skill in the talent associated with them. It's less, "gives you overt superpowers" and more "gives you badass or just supremely useful skills." Only the seabed version of it's land cousin doesn't cause Cutie Pox by itself. Repeated exposure on the other hoof . . .

5) Splicers could be called "Jacks." Like "Jacks of all trades?" They've taken so much POX that they've lost all sense of their original identity. Their original cutie-marks may even be covered up by the others like an old sticker. Almost completely hollowed out (shudder) they now seek POX to overcompensate for their lack of rightful purpose.

Maybe make her a Zebra skilled in herbal alchemy like Zecora. Tenebaum's history with the Nazis comes from an association with what's "bad and scary" to most people. Zebra fit nicely into that equivalent role and it makes Tenenbaum's place in their development make all the more sense.

As for plasmids, I think players should be given the option of even having them. When I played originally, I barely used my plasmids, preferring to rely on gunplay and hacking the drones. As an RP based on the game, the players should feel the same flexibility in how they approach this situation. Especially since it's not one pony versus an entire city, but rather a group working together. Each with their own preferences and skills.

Okay... Wow. Uh... We're doing this! This was surprisingly comprehensive. I'm gonna keep the name "Rapture" (just because it's the series' identifier) but the rest is GOLD.

Why thank you! It's not me really though, it's the ponies! Equestria is just surprisingly flexible when it comes to incorporating crossovers. Fallout: Equestria being the supreme example. If a human from the Wasteland went to Equestria or the Mane Six went to the Wasteland . . . . meh it might work if you get a good writer. But combing Equestria with another setting? All of the series established elements and characters can be adapted rather nicely to fit another's mold. More than most, this works the best (seemingly) with video game settings.

So, if this is going to take place BEFORE things went to Hell, I guess modern, Canterlot born me, isn't going to stumble his way there after getting in a shipwreck?

We're going to play as citizens on the weeks before and after the New Year's revolt. Good idea, you think?

Well . . . not a bad idea strictly. It's just, limiting to the kinds of characters that can be played. For instance, I personally would have no reason to leave Canterlot in favor of Raptu- . . . img-1423622-1-blink.png Actually! Now that I think about it . . .img-1423622-2-huh.png I would have all the reason in the world to go there! I want to claim the title of Master Swordpony.

One thousand years ago, it was an actual knightly rank. The Master Swordpony was recognized as the greatest fighter in Equestria and the Princesses bodyguard and personal champion. (It comes from a fanfic I read.) Obviously, the position has become obsolete in the century of (mostly) uninterrupted civil peace. In Canterlot, I am a relative pariah. Longing for combat, but not a soldier. Rather, a duelist, a hired champion! Which nicely fits into my part-time job as a bodyguard. The fleeting hope that I'll get to use my skills.

Of course I would escape to a city where there's no pretense of civility to hinder my ascension! The very talent that makes me an oddity in Canterlot makes me . . . . The Master Swordpony in Rapture! img-1423622-3-img-1379355-5-xtWXQl1.png

All right, now I'm REALLY excited when can we do this?!

Soon, soon. Just waiting for more people.

I'd like to join. I need an opportunity to try out my new OC, Rush, since the roleplay I made him for died almost immediately.

Why would rush be in Rapture? I mean, I'm fine with him joining, but he has to have a reason to be there.

So, I'm thinking about basing my character off of Sander Cohen. He's going to be a griffin, but besides that I'm still unsure. Do you guys think he would fit well into the story we're trying to weave? I think his gradual descent into insanity (due to lack of appreciation/attention) would be interesting to explore.

Ideas and tips would be appreciated.

I had a reason, but I already forgot what it was. If I had used him and gotten a chance to develop him more it would be a lot easier to come up with a reason, but that's not the case, so... I guess I'll have to get back to you on that.

Actually, I guess this is as good a reason as any: His tendency to fly into fits of rage earned him a reputation as a troublemaker, so he left the surface and tried to make a new start in Rapture.

That's the best I can come up with right now, anyway.

I tried to make a Bioshock RP a whileback, but it flopped. Glad to see someone else had the idea, if slightly different from mine.

Could I be put down as reserve until I male my mind up?
