Im terrible with coming up with names, help name my pony OC?

Im complete garbage with coming up with names, so i thought i should make a post on MLP forums(even though im new here) and see if somepony can give me any good ideas

 

He's basically my "ponysona"

 

He's a male pegasus who can be very lazy at times while at other times he can be very energetic and just cant stay still. He tends to stay quiet but yearns to have social interactions with other ponies even though he's not very good at conversations. He loves to listen to music and play video games. He's very loyal to his friends (the very few he has) and can be very sarcastic. At times he will just zone out and completely ignore everypony/everything around him. He dreams of one day joining the Royal Guard. He has no cutie mark for he has not discovered his "special talent"

Pretty epic OC, as for names I got nothing. When I was naming my two OC's I had gave them, much like you have, personalities and a quick back story and when I'd done that I look at my OC's physical appearance and their personalities and thought what best describes these two? Now my OCs are opposites interlinked, two personalities in one pony. His good personality was white with black hair and blues eyes, he was kind and intelligent and very loyal whereas his opposite was black with white hair and red eyes and just as the good OC was kind and loyal this OC was evil and betraying. I thought long and hard about them and who they are and then it just suddenly came to me, the good OC was to be named Lightheart and the evil OC was to be named Blackheart.

 

I don't know if the story of how my OCs were named will help you name yours but I'll keep an eye on this and will be back if I think of any ideas on what to call yours. Here are my OC's at the bottom.

I've just realised that, as I'm re-reading your character description, your OC's personality is very similar to mine, I mean incredibly similar. I mean it's like you've taken my personality and put it into your OC. Bravo my good man, Bravo.

Well. Most pony's name are related to their special talent. Seeing that he is going to be a royal guard, his name got to do with something about protection (example: Shining Armour). So first think I think of is keywords that means protection. 

 

Shield

Castle

Rook(chess name for castle)

knight

spear(since they uses spear)

 

and so on

 

Pony names are usually adjective and noun or a descriptive noun and another noun(Example: Pinkie Pie( a pink pie), Twilight Sparkle(a Twilight that sparkle), Shining Armour)

 

Considering a pegusus, you can use flying related description

 

Windy

Gusty

Speedy

 

(on second thought,  I look at it Windy Shield and Speedy Castle does not make sense )

 

Maybe use description like

 

crescent 

 

crested

 

Blackish dark grey( what ever you call your coat's color)

 

and that is all i can really think of this part I am not good at

 

So what have we come up with

 

Crested Shield Sounds nice

 

since he is dark I think he would match a night guard so Crescent Moon or Crescent Castle

 

or just Rooks( nice and simple name)

Crescent Shield also sounds nice and i have thought of a one word name but it doesnt really stick

Relating to Octavia Philharmonic's idea of being a night guard how about Night Shield. Or, relating to his tendency to 'zone out' how about Dream Shield (I quite like the idea of having shield in his name, so I might come up with a few like that). These probably aren't very good names to be honest but it's all I can think of for the moment.

Just throwing it out there, in FIM, it seems to me their names have some connection to their cutie mark (or to be cutie mark)....you should figure out a more fleshed out story for this character if he is not your personal OC, and that way there will be more to go by since he does not yet have his cutie mark. 

The more creative you get with your characters, the easier a name will come to you.  I am good at naming but with oso our ther peoples' OC's, I want them to figure out what makes their own ponies special in their own eyes, so this is the best advice I can give...I am not you, so I have no idea how you want this character to grow since his lack of cutie mark gives this opportunity...

 

My OC's Treble Bolt and Metal Earth reflect my husband's and my own personalities, so our stories are already fleshed out since they are our ponified selves....

If you haven't already try taking key words which describe your character and google up their synonyms. Once you have that, you'll have a wider selection of options for mixing and matching names. Here's a couple based on what other users have said and related synonyms. Some are a bit strong for a character name but it's to give you an idea after all

Relating to Octavia Philharmonic's ideas..., using the word shield sounds nice.

The best I can come up is Navy Shield.

By the way that word navy is the name of the color dark blue, not that U.S Navy.

Well Treble, i know the cutiemark relates to their name but without a name, how can i get a cutiemark? Oh,im a BIG gamer so i naturally tried finding a tech/game related name but also at the same time im big into the military so i tried coming up with something military related

And British Brony i do like the idea of Shield being part of the name...

Something with Aegis,Shield,Sentinel

Now that's what I'm talking about (don't know why part of my post went garbily gook for a bit).  Things that make you "YOU" and if it's your own pony persona to some degree, attributing your own unique characteristics to this pony will help you come up with a name.  Shield sounds really good since it can attribute both your military and gaming likes.  The more we know about you, the more we can help!

I've just had a couple of more ideas for a name. The first one I came up with was Cloven Sentinel, which I think sounds good but cloven is technically incorrect when talking about ponies and horses.

 

The other one I came up with was Night's Aegis, which keeps with his colour scheme and how he reminds most of us about a night guard.

 

These are all I've got at the moment but I'll be back with any ideas that I get. Good Luck.

darn, this is harder than I thought it would be.

 

Well, taking into account that he likes to play video games, I was thinking of a more nerdier name. Is nerdier even a word? Well, now it is.

 

Or maybe something mysterious?

 

It will probably be easier to think of a name for him if you decide what his special talent is rather than thinking of a talent that goes with his name, makes sense?

 

I will probably be of greater use to you once I know what his talent is, so for now, I'll think of something. But no gurantees though.

I just thought of a new one. How about Black Aegis?

 

Determining the name of him is quite hard. You may now like the Black in the word, but that just popped up from the color of his fur.
