Why all the anime hate? I don't see what's so bad about it... I watch pokemon, as do many other people I know. As for being overly cute/violent/mysterious, I think this is perfect for the style of show.

Life is like an MMORPG, but with fewer fantasy weapons and more soul-crushing nihilistic despair that visits when you least need it.

I'm guessing that by "anime" you mean Pokemon/Yugioh type shows or shonen action series like DBZ, Naruto, or Bleach.  There's a whole world of stuff out there, especially if you want to look for more mature (and by that I don't necessarily mean violent or sexual) material out there.

Have you seen Cowboy Bebop?  Excellent show, and while it does some of the standard anime design elements (the character Ed does look like a "standard" anime girl, with the big eyes and crazy red hair) it's really a very unique show that could be described as as science fiction series directed by Quentin Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez.  It's got a futuristic setting, but has elements of film noir, Elmore Leonard novels, spaghetti westerns, and even blaxploitation movies.  Sounds a little schizophrenic, I know, but I've met a good number of people who hate anime but love this show.

I also take it you haven't seen Grave of the Fireflies, a fantastic film about Japanese children in World War II.  Critics who've seen it have said that it's one of the greatest war films they've ever seen, animated or not.

IMO, "mainstream" anime is just the tip of the iceberg.

I like anime simply because I adore animation.

I don't like the music

There is good Japanese music. If you care to listen to the following links, let me know what you think.

The whole style just comes off as cheap and tries to hard to compensate by being overly cute/violent/mysterious/.

Unfortunately, there is an abundance of terrible, poorly-animated anime. A lot of the famous ones (Naruto, Bleach, DBZ, etc.) I dislike because they seem to try and produce as much content with as little effort as possible. They just end up being boring.

One of my favorite animes ever is FLCL, which is six episodes long. It's about quality over quantity.

Really, the shows by the studio Gainax are where it's at. Stuff like FLCL, Gurren Lagann, Panty & Stocking, and Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi have a beautiful mix of animation quality, style, character design, and story.

The Gainax animator and director Hiroyuki Imaishi left Gainax to form a new studio called Trigger, and check out this clip from a short film by Trigger: http://www.tubechop.com/watch/1188682

The previous clip is from Little Witch Academia, which is just fantastic. It makes me excited for their upcoming anime, Kill la Kill.

I think before one can dismiss anime, that person should at least watch a Studio Ghibli film (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, etc.). There is too much good anime to warrant ignoring the entire medium.

I guess I got shot down in flames again, maybe it is a cultural thing. I just don't understand the massive pacman eyes and simple mouth movements. The whole style just comes off as cheap and tries to hard to compensate by being overly cute/violent/mysterious/.

You could say the same things about the modern day episodes of Family Guy and The Simpsons. The characters literally have very stiff moments like they have a rod up their butt and their mouths move awfully stale-like compared to 90's animation.

I like anime, but I understand people not liking it.

The thing is I find that it depends on the type of anime you get exposed to at first. Most people get exposed to the kids stuff first and it forever taints their view. That being said, there are some people out there that just don't "get" anime in the same way I just don't "get" soap operas.

I've never liked anime because I've never given it a chance.

I may start watching some anime by saving it for a rainy day or something.

Oh the pacman eyes is actually a bit of a jibe at the westerners. The Japanese have always found our eyes to be really huge. In a way it's a racist stereotype

Ha ha your to funny and thanks for mentioning me in there dear. Well anyway as a response to the creator of this thread do I hate anime? I think its OK depending on the anime I'm more for the "Mystic/Monster" type animes like Shone Jumps Yu-Gi-Oh PG-13 (Thanks to 4kids it looks like a "Family" anime but its PG-13) or Dragon Drive (This was intended to target older children) PG. Anything that's going to introduce "Different Dimensions" or "Interesting creature design" and overall just anime that is initiative.

I didn't care for Naruto because to me its like the Twilight Saga of anime. It doesn't even look like the creator of the show even looked up any info on Ninja's before he started writing. I watched 27 episodes of Naruto before I stopped it also seemed like the creator was on a rollacoaster of "emotions" first cool, sad, then trying to be funny.

I've also watched up to 30 episodes of Bleach. and I thought it was better then Naruto but still for the way people rave over these two shows is just beyond me. I think both shows are OK at best but that's just me. I miss the days when Yu-Gi-Oh was popular how it was about monsters and an Egyptian Pharaoh trying to find out who he really is now that was innovation at its best. But then again that's just me.

It makes me sad to see that a show about unrealistic Ninja's has gotten more popular then an initiative show about dimensions, monsters, and a pharaoh trying to find out who he really is. I'm also tired of seeing the Weaboos, and overall I think anime is ok but its very overrated at times. I also wish people would try other animes them just Bleach, Death Note, DBZ, and Naruto. I miss the days when Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh were popular and everyone was into that. *Sighs sadly* Oh well just thought I'd though my two cents out there. And again this is just me.

Not at all the case. It's because the modern formula for anime design was based off of Osamu Tezuka's work Astro Boy, which in return was based off of the classic Disney cartoons from the 30's featuring Mickey Mouse and friends.

Also, not all Anime eyes are big and wide.

There was a documentary about it, but I can't find a link for it so sadly can't contest this without going into a pointless argument. You are at least partially right though :)

DB and DBZ are the only anime/manga that I care about. Everything else I've seen or heard about so far doesn't interest me.

I guess Dragon Ball/Z just finds a way to set itself apart from the rest. At least for me.

It's probably best if I don't become an anime fan, though. I'd likely just end up in an endless amount of arguments since a lot of anime fans consider it a sin to like DBZ.

The few times Ive tried to watch it comes off as weird. I'm not sure if ponies are classified as Anime but I don't think so.

Anime is japanese cartoons, i don't see how MLP'd be related to that anyways, so yea xD

I somewhat like Anime, so far, only ones recommended by others, i try to watch an anime all on my own and it's just not my taste.

The reason i've started watching anime is because the lack in good cartoons nowadays. Besides MLP, the only american cartoon i currently watch is Gravity falls, i hate most of the animation and stories of most other cartoons because they seem to all be aiming at one current demographic, which isn't me, they try to hard to aim at a single group of people and exclude audiences of other ages because, it's not their thing. A good example of this is Pokemon, I still enjoy Pokemon, the first generation that is, my 10 year old cousin likes it too, my 19 year old cousin thinks it's awesome, and my 7 year old brother loves it.

I like anime, not all of it of course, not enough for me to call myself an otaku either, while i think it's up to someone to chose what they like or dislike, don't just say it's all bad, not all the music is the same, and not all anime is one single genre.

So far I've seen maybe what, two High School ones, and they're mostly random pointless comedy with characters i ended up loving, or the adventure ones that keep a goal throught out the whole story, and then there's the action ones, i'm not really that amused by the action, more by the character depth, and different characters they portray through out the series.

I consider anime just like any other cartoon, and i'm pretty obsessed with cartoons, but before anime, i can honestly say all i watched was random humor.

It's just not something I get. Like comic books. I like Batman as much as the next guy, maybe more so, but I just can't get into comic books as a medium. Same with anime, nothing against it, it just doesn't do it for me, for whatever reason.

It's the style of the artists, and many different characters have different eye shapes as posted earlier. I am not sure of the budget revolving around Anime series, but for the most part, I find your comment on it being cheap horribly inaccurate. I would confidently say modern/recent anime is not cheap. Here is an example of what I would consider a high quality anime.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKXJSLaE-GQ

As for the mouth movements, I would say they are not even close to being simple when compared to Western T.V. Perhaps some of the older anime series like Pokemon and DBZ have "simple" mouth movements, but that is no different than saying Family guy has simple mouth movements. It is a very weak argument to make for why not to watch/like anime.

Your argument basically would be no different to say "I feel MLP, Family guy, or South Park to be cheap because of the quality of their art style. Anime has greatly evolved, and there are some beautifully animated series out there like the one above.

I'm not the biggest fan of anime either... The only anime show that I occasionally watch is Squid Girl.

I think that anime is overrated. blink.png  I see all of these people obsessing over it, and I'm like, meh. I guess that anime lovers could say the same about bronies. happy.png

*Cracks fingers* In my whole life I have mainly watched american cartoons and there was this on anime that was PERFECT IN EVERY DIMENSION I'm only going to say the name towards the end....

Story line:

It was amazing they had different characters without them getting annoying or redundant except for *cough* them...

The show was 50 episodes long every episode added more and more tense for the finale

Info: It was a some what horror with comedy sprinkled through out every episode?

Music:

The Season 2 intro was especially amazing music was nice but mostly in Japanese

Animation:

It was nice and smooth

the animation style was unique and special in it's own ways

Flaws:

There were these two characters that seemed to get in everyone's way and annoy the   living Kringle out of them ((I should say it about now)) They were Black Star and Exalibur they just seemed way to redundant ((but Exalibur was just a joke anyways)) Black Star all he ever talked about was reaching god level or above that , he should no sympathy for anyone but himself and he was an ass...Worst part is that he's a main character!! Honestly that's all I have to say on the topic

Soul Eater was the best anime I will ever see and will remain that way forever....

Take a look yourself I believe it's on Netflix..

Just take a look at their episodes, luckily you'll far in love like I did

That's all I have to say about Anime in general I don't watch it like some of the nuts in my school but I watch the good ones mostly

Oh also...
