I figured I would make another attempt at Twilight, but this time using a new method.

 

 

I simply must say, this is my best drawing yet! I put a lot more work into it than my previous ones, and I also used a skeletal reference image (This technique) as opposed to drawing 100% by eye. This method was very helpful, as it allowed me to get the proper size and shape of her body with little error. If you aren't already using this technique or something similar, you simply must try it!

YES. The skeletal base is magnificent. I tried the method for the first time on this twilight too, and it was key! I really do hope more people try it out. It helps SO MUCH. And you can use it for any pose!

Well, finally got my Twilight sketch done. Meant to have it done a few days ago, but got majorly sidetracked. Done now, though. It really sucks to draw Twilight, those darned bangs of doom.

Wow, @Dark Moon! That drawing is really good. Almost looks traced! Well done.

 

But it also kinda makes me want to bring something up...

 

I select an image for a reason. The title of this thread does not mean "find a picture of twilight and draw it", I mean "draw THIS picture of twilight". The purpose of my image was to introduce the concept of joints in the leg. And when people go off and select their own image to draw, my challenge is turned down and you cannot fully reap the benefits of this thread.

 

Please remember that the images I post will get progressively more difficult. I am just trying to keep you guys on your toes and try to help you improve.

 

I mean if you want to re-create other images, I totally encourage that! Practice as much as you can. But please be sure to try the images I post. They'll probably push you a bit more than something you select on your own.

And no Dark Moon, I'm not picking on you <3. Other people have done the same thing you have. I've been wanting to mention this for a while and never had the right moment. Please don't be offended  Your image really is lovely.

Hey guys! Sorry for the delay. The storm last night knocked out the power so I was unable to get my digital out for a while. Here it is in all it's imperfect glory!

 

 

Drawing Twilight's cutie mark was a real kick to the head also had trouble trying to get her right part of her face smaller and less proportionate to the left side as she is looking in  a specific direction.

 

 

I'm going to try to draw her on paper later.

Started working on this last night, but it turned into a complete and utter abomination so I started again from scratch. This fared a bit better.

 

 

It did get horribly smudged with all the erasing I did, so I did a bit of digital cleanup. There's still a lot about it that's off, though. Those eyes are bugging the crap outta me.

Next image goes up in 23 minutes... kinda short notice but yeah. I just finished the sketch and I just want to give you guys a moment before I transition.

Image number three is Rainbow Dash! I found one with the wings closed... I think I remember someone saying they dreaded that pose. I hope this one is okay.

 

 

In my opinion, the hardest thing about this one is the tail. I didn't worry too much about it though.

 

edit: I think I'm going to start drawing on paper. Maybe.

Heh, I know how to draw ponies, but, nontheless, a true artist keeps practice closeby.

I'll start doing the sketch, but, unfortunately, I will not be able to put  here a high definition drawing because my scanner is... Somewhat of dead. So you guys will have to stay with just a terrible-quality picture from my infamous "skilled" iPhone.

 

I'll post it sometime soon!

you're doing a great job in choosing more and more challenging pictures! I tried a different method this time but I'm not very pleased with how it turned out. her neck is too long and so is her body, making her look like a giraffe. and her eyes are slightly too close together. ah well all part of the learning process. btw i noticed the date for the next picture says thursday the 16th but thursday will be the 20th.

But that is what we are doing! Tracing is not allowed in here. What I am asking people to do is recreate the image using sketching methods, such as skeletons and base shapes, comparing different parts of the body to get proportions correct, etc. Mastering these methods and understanding them in and out It is a thing of practice. This thread is where people get that practice (and they can practice on their own too). The previous image, as well as this one, hopefully introduces the concept of skeletal bases to get the arms right. As the poses get more complex, more people will follow the guides (I link them all in my first post). Thank you very much for reminding people to do this.

 

Seriously guys, those resource links help you TONS. Please check them out! I think a lot of you have.. but keep looking at them to make sure you don't forget how it works.

 

Edit: Oh, did you mean drawing a pony on your own based on the guides? I address that in this post.

What i found made it more challenging was the fact that her expression and body language actually convey more complex emotion, just as the twilight one showed (slightly) more than applejack. I hope you keep throwing more complex emotions/dynamic poses at us! keep it up.

Okay! Redid it on paper. I think I will learn better this way (you know, without being able to select and move the eyes/legs into a better spot).
