MLP Card Game

In case people are like me and went looking madly about today for starters. There are none at least until next week though that is uncertain it may be the new year. Kinda mad they didn't release the starters but I am hoping that people who were at the pre-releases will put up scans of the Manes this weekend. If we can get those we have reference to play!

The rules and everything are already up but the manes...just can't find them. I plan to buy them all but I hate having a box of cards sitting here...taunting me...

Also just so everyone is aware, all URs are foil. There is also a complete foil parallel set, they take the place of a common in the pack and aren't numbered unless they are ultra rare. I will trade a literal kidney for a foil 'yay' just don't ask where I get it.

It seems the starter decks are indeed in very short supply, but pretty much everything else is available. Curiouser and curiouser!

Also, the game plays very differently to Yu-gi-oh, Pokemon or any other game you'd care to mention. I like the idea that there are parallel piles of problems to solve by playing your cards to them, and the addition of troublemakers gives players a lot to consider. Deckbuilding is going to be very important in competitive play!

Now, how am I going to get a bunch of the cards over here...?

Actually there are a couple of card games that this game feels like an amalgamation of to me and that is Score's "Buffy:The Vampire Slayer" card game (2001-2004) and Decipher's "Lord of the Rings" card game (2001-2007). Both those games have been dead for a while though so I'm not sure how many people will remember them. Only old gamers who have been around forever like me I guess!

I think it could be like the yugioh of this generation, I say that because I believe yugioh was ruined once the 5ds things came out, I didn't watch GX but I've head good things about it, but after 5ds i saw some of it and I found it terrible, I think if this mlp card game was made correctly I will be just as good as the original yugioh card game.

Sadly neither of those made their way across the pond - or if they did, it wasn't to huge applause, sadly enough.

And I think I fall into the old gamers category, Macklin. I still cherish my first run HeroQuest ;)

I guess my last question is do the support characters/friends vary and cater towards a certain mane or are they all just generic splashables and the only real difference is in the mane character you use?

All the characters have a power color for one of the mane 6. You technically don't need to match, but many cards require that there be x amount of one color on the table in order to play (example: Friend card Fluttershy - Guidance Counselor requires that there be 3 fluttershy power (yellow color) on the table in order to play). Because of this, it looks like 2-3 colors will be the norm in most decks.

Alright, but each color has a strong point over another, yes? I just want all the information I can grab so I know if it is a safe investment or not to go ahead and buy a box.

Each one has it's own general play style, much like the colors in Magic: The Gathering do. For example, Rainbow Dash cards generally are about moving your cards around quickly and cheaply, while Pinkie Pie cards seem to have a theme of buffing your own abilities.

They're just general themes of course, every color will still have a mix of everything. No deck is going to be at a particular disadvantage against any other deck solely because of the deck's color.

I wanted to buy this game, but I'm slightly confused. What do I need to buy for the game and where should I buy it?

I recommend you support your local card/comic book store by purchasing from them also you can get to see the community there.

You would want to start with a Starter Deck which currently in stores is...

Rainbow Dash/Rarity

Twilight Sparkle/ Applejack

You get 2 characters and the deck is a hybrid so u can choose which one you would like to use.

If you can't find any local stores that carry them, Wal-mart carriess them before Target does assuming you live in the US.

So it's pretty much like Magic: The Gathering and Kaijudo where you got many colors to choose from but you mix and match to your liking is what I am getting, please correct me if I'm wrong.

That seems to be the general gist, yes - however, I get the impression that focusing on a couple of power types won't hinder your play that much. You'll be able to solve pretty much all problems by using cards that can alter your resources, that kind of stuff.

Also, I'm editing the interview with Gail now, should have the episode up tomorrow sometime!

I just checked my order status on Toywiz. My booster box is apparently shipping today, but my Fluttershy/Pinkie Pie starter set now says it doesn't ship til January :( I preordered early November too. I really wanted to build a Pinke deck.

I preordered both of the starter sets combined and that is not shipping until January either. :( But why? Is the packaging different?

I do know that the 2-player starter set is not gonna be available until next week. Toywiz doesn't have any control over when they get their items to ship to us so they guess on the preorder date. Sometimes they come on time but sometimes they come really late.

I did buy a booster pack from Target yesterday. However I want to go to one of the local hobby shops and see if they have any of the theme decks. I can cancel my preorder if that is the case.

I've got both starters and a booster box on the way! I was able to find the box cheaper on eBay than from Toywiz and Enterplay ($89.99 instead of $99.99 and $125.64 respectively.) And since he was selling the starters for the same price as Toywiz (but with free shipping), I went ahead and got everything from him. When they get here, I'll make a blog post with my pulls.  ;)  I'm also going to get the 2 player starter set, probably from eBay again since Toywiz says theirs will ship in January. And yes, I'm totally making a Flutterdash deck.

Also, Enterplay said on their Facebook page that they will release another version of the starter deck with the foil mane characters flipped (so foil Rarity and Applejack instead of Rainbow and Twilight.) They said they'd be shipping to Hot Topic in a couple of weeks, so they may be an exclusive item.

I did read that last part... maybe I do want to cancel my preorder. My husband will want a foil Rainbow Dash but he will also want a foil Applejack and I want a foil Rarity. Or maybe I just want to empty my wallet and buy everything.

I just wanna start playing this game already. :P
