Keeping the sword would have corrupted Stephan even more, or whoever took it from him before he threw it in. It would indeed cause another paradox.

No nevermind, thats a terrible idea, if someone took the sword, it would have corrupted them, they couldnt go to Bruchellia, zombels would still be everywhere

The spirit jumped into Stephan, therefore when Starburst retrieved the sword, he would not have gotten corrupted, nor would anypony, because the spirit would not have been in the sword.
