There is a freeware version of Spelunky you could try Game.

 

 It's not nearly as good or polished as the HD one, and the controls are a bit wonky. But if you don't mind wonky controls and 8-bit graphics you could give that a shot. At least until you can buy the remake.

You could just settle with Linux, where pretty much everything is freeware.

I've played the freeware version and have had no problems. As long as you get it from the official website Spelunkyworld it should be fine. But if it makes you that nervous then at least the remake is only 15$.
