Besides the lack of power and "conservative appearance", why is that ?

 

Lately I've been looking at the instantaneous MPG depending on how much gas I provide at any time, trying to get the MPG to be at least 50 . I went about 325 miles on about.. $20 worth if gas before I refilled the other day (it's almost a full tank). I'm confused with how the fuel meter works..
