SpongeBob sucks now, it rarely ever turns out any good episodes, it's ridiculed by observers as often as it was praised back when it was in its prime, is the centerpiece of a dying network, and the only reasons why it's still doing so good in the ratings are because of deceptive marketing (see ratings traps like "Atlantis SquarePantis" and "Truth or Square") and that the competition really isn't strong enough.

Well, I'll give it that it's not dead in one respect. Once a show is made and finished you cannot take it back, and hindsight is 20/20. For SpongeBob, that's a very beautiful thing because its original episodes made it one of the best cartoons ever to air. The legacy of those original episodes cannot be ruined completely.

 

What is dead is the purity of the show and the respect people had for it once its quality began to decline. At the same time, not being able to take back those mistakes proves to be a bad thing because then you get some of the bottom-of-the-barrel crap like the torture porns, the disturbing episodes, and the ratings traps surfacing and defining the show now. It all goes on what is memorable. If most of the stuff is crap then all people will remember is the crap, and vice versa if the stuff is good. It tarnishes the good name this show has built up off of the work of Hillenburg, Springer, and others. That's what's dead.
