I live in a more rural part of Japan, so foreigners are not quite so common. There is an American military base, but weirdly enough the Americans seem to feel very uncomfortable going off-base and exploring Japan. There are exceptions, of course--myself and my husband included. But foreigners in Japan are VERY obvious.

 

Whenever a light-skinned, light-haired, or light-eyed foreigner enters a Japanese shop, the Japanese are extremely eager to test their English on them. Because every light-skinned, light-haired or light-eyes foreigner must be American, right? It's actually very convenient for us, but at the same time it's a little bit intimidating. I would like to be able to buy groceries without a Japanese child staring at me like I'm an alien (although it is fun to make faces at opportune moments)

 

Because of this, everyone automatically assumes (and rightly so) that my husband and I are Americans. Sometimes to fuck with the locals we will enter an establishment speaking German. It totally throws them off and they have no idea what to do. I've done this with French as well, but I once ran into a French-speaking Japanese woman who was all-too-excited to practice her French with me. (I only took 2 years of it, and it's rusty. Somehow I managed to get away without looking too much like an asshat)

 

TLDR; If you're foreign, you stick out like a sore thumb in Japan.

 

I'm Hawaiian so I'm dark haired, dark eyed, sorta fair skinned but I'm sure I could totally get a tan if I wanted one. My Pacific Islander side can show. All 13% of it
