Nope, I think it's only when you do the "@" variant, usually done by highlighting a post.

The other one is just linking a member's name. No ideas about the code for us mobile peasants.

I don't think that's the case, since the @ symbol is not connected to the actual BBCode, well, code of mentioning users.

 

I got a mentioning notification earlier with mentions without the "@" symbol, so I suppose there could be some derpy stuff in the mentioning subsystem of this forum...
