This is why when you get an 8 GB flash drive, you really only have 7.45 GB in Windows. A marketing gigabyte and a real gigabyte aren't the same thing. A marketing gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 (1 billion) bytes.  A real gigabyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes. 

 

8 marketing gigabytes  = 8,000,000,000 bytes

8 real gigabytes = 8,589,934,592 bytes

 

If you divide 8,000,000,000 by 1,073,741,824, you get 7.4505805696923828125 gigabytes that you actually get to use.
