Is it just me or is Pinkie Pie not written well in season 4? She's always been one of my favourites but she just doesn't seem the same in season 4.

 

I just watched Filli Vanilli and Pinkie's behaviour in that episode really bothered me.

Yes, I actually really liked those episodes. It's the episodes where she's not the main focus thats the problem. Some of her appearances she comes across as grating, whereas in the older series she never did.

 

It's hard to believe that the same pony who sang the smile song just made Fluttershy cry multiple times in one episode.

Yeah, I have to agree. She was great in season 4 when she was the main focus, but not as great when she was just a side character, most of the time anyway.

 

 But one thing to note is that she wasn't trying to be malicious in Filli Vanilli. I don't think it was meant as her actively trying to hurt Flutters, she was just being oblivious. We've seen this before in "A friend in deed" from season 2. When she called out that Cranky was bald to the whole town. Pinkie is really good at cheering ponies up, but sometimes she doesn't notice when she's doing the opposite.

 

 The problem with her in that episode isn't that she's doing something out of character, it's that they exaggerated that character trait way too far. Pinkie might not notice all the time when she's being upsetting, but she'd notice when she's making one of her best friend's cry. It was fine the first time, but when she kept doing it, it started to seem forced. That episode would have been near perfect if they just toned her down a bit, or had her realize what was wrong and apologize near the end.
