Anyways, are any of these genres even specifically defined?

Doesn't everyone think of something a little bit different when thinking about an RPG or an FPS?

 

RPG means Role playing game, so you play a role. Now, actors in movies or theatres also play a role, and they do not get to decide on their actions or skills or whatnot. So do these things even have to be part of a role playing game? If not, then why is F4 criticised for being such a "bad RPG" because it lacks skills?

Yes, I love defining things by their names and taking it extra literally. :b

Well, fun thing is. You play a role in almost every game don't you? If you play Super Mario Bros, you're taking the role of Mario. If you play Metal Gear, Solid Snake or Big Boss or whoever. Isaac, you play as Isaac (Or any of his split personalities.) Even in like a Football game, you're taking the role of the football players, right?

 

 So, isn't every game a roleplaying game then?

 Except Mario, he really just doesn't get development, even in those games.

Yes Dawn, but the name "Role Playing Game" just says that you play a role. And playing a role does not automatically involve any kind of development.

 

But that is just taking it too literally. Of course everyone would argue that a RPG needs that, even me.
