gaming Game Discussion: In-your-face gimmicks

Video games these days are bound to have some sort of gimmick, no matter what it's about. Video games can be awesome if they use their own concepts and ideas. In fact, I'd rather prefer more games doing that. However, I don't mind a silly little extra in there every now and again. Some gimmicks and video games are very clever and well-used. But, sometimes, games feel like they need to shove their gimmick down your throat. That is extremely irritating and it can even ruin a game.

What games do you feel have the most in-your-face gimmicks ever?

When I say gimmicks, I mean stupid but fun or out of place things.

For example, the gunplay in Shadow the Hedgehog or the hoverboards in Sonic Riders.

I don't really mind gimmicks as long as they aren't cliches that we have seen before. But, they do need their own original ideas. The game that I feel that has the most in your face gimmick is, Saints Row IV. Sure, it is harmless fun with references but it has so many gimmicks from Mass Effect, Star Wars, Men in Black, and the Matrix.

You really should say what exactly is a gimmick by your definition and maybe an example or two, because, from your post I would understand it as a mechanic taken from another game in which case I would be forced to say that pretty much every game in last 20 years if a gimmick in itself.

I'm not trying to act stupid, it's just that someone would say gimmick is a bad thing, stupid but fun thing, stealing of ideas, broken thing, out of place mechanic, a reference ... Well, you get the idea.

I would say a gimmick is more like a cheap over the top innovation to try and hook people in.  Like for example, a lot of people would call the Wii's motion controls a gimmick.

Though still, going by your definition I'd say one of my favorite gimmicks was with how Super Smash Bros was handled.  I actually like the idea of an arena fighter where the objective is to knock people off the stage, and the % thing was a creative way to do it.  I sort of wish that someone else would implement something like that into their game without being afraid of being claimed as a rip-off, because there's a lot of cool ways you can expand on Smash's current formula.

Edit: Re-read the post, I misread it the first time through, my mistake.  Though for something that was a legendary gimmick for it's time - the virtual boy.

I guess I mean stupid but fun or out of place things.

Stuff like the guns and vehicles in Shadow the Hedgehog Gunstar Heroes for the Genesis.

Well, in that case, the most gimmicky game in history has to be Saint's Row IV, as someone already noted. The game is packed with gimmicks like that and is very "In yo face, dawg!" about it... Strangely enough it works and creates very unique and amazingly enjoyable experience.
