So, I finally got a headset:

and I was wondering programs some of you that do Let's Plays use to record them? I've really never done it before but I'd like to give it a shot.

Try FRAPS, or Camtasia Studio, or BandiCam, or CamStudio, or a bunch others that exist but I can't remember. By the way, the recorders I just listed are in order of quality, so choose wisely ;)

I use fraps or TF2's built-in recording capabilities on rare occasions.  I only do LPs sometimes though, and I'm not too serious about it.

What about getting your voice onto the track alongside the games audio? That's what I've never been able to figure out and pull off.

i HIGHLY recommend camtasia studio 8  if your planning some pc lets plays

it easy to us it has pretty much everything ( screen, webcam and voice narration capture editor )

but if you really want the fancy in depth editing try Sony Vegas pro ( note this is only the editing software not screen capture

beware camtasia cost roughly $300 from their website

and Sony Vegas is about $50

You can do that in fraps. If you get the program, look around a bit. There's an option to record audio impute along with game audio.

that feature comes inbult with camtasia

in the editor go the the voice narration section and it will record your voice and save the clip to you desired location ( usually in a .wmv file)

then just open the file in camtasia and drop it into the time line editor

I use Mirillis Action! for most recordings, and things that dislike it, I fall back on FRAPS despite the staggeringly gigantic files it generates. A 15 minute recording with Action including voice over will be around 500mb, where as with Fraps it will be 20-40 gig. Ouch.

If you are just starting out, honestly I would use an editor like Windows Movie Maker or something of equal quality. It gets the job done, is free, and can render in HD quite quickly. Granted, it is quite bare bones in functionality.

I used fraps to record everything i did on my PC. Its like 37 USD or so.

It works well i think, and as for the audio recording you can use it to record audio via one of the settings.

Or if you want you can use something like audacity, audacity is good for removing static from your audio or stuff like that. And its free.

And for editing it depends on your budget, sony vegas is a pretty good software for it, but if you aren't doing alot of serious high quality stuff you can get by on windows movie maker ;p. I did.

Theres also stuff like camtasia and stuff like that, but i never used it so idk about it at all frankly.

As for recording things via consoles(Idk about handhelds really.) i used a Dazzle HD, it cost me like 80 bucks or something.

Of course, i didn't use it much to be honest, and i don't do youtube anymore, so don't invest to much if you don't plan on going that far.

Good luck!

I've been using Xsplit myself.  The program itself is free, but to get the most of it, you do have to dole out the dosh for a license with them.

Call me a consumer whore, but considering how easy it's made streaming and straight video recording for me, I feel the $30/year for their license is well worth the cost.

I would recommend FRAPS, that usually works for the lets plays I help make. If you can't get that, a lot of games have built-in recording capabilities, and those work fine.
