I'm new to the whole roleplaying thing but it sounds like a lot of fun and I would like to give it a try. I was wondering if there was anyone experienced and patient enough to maybe teach me the basics of roleplaying before I actually join a real one. I was thinking maybe me and 1 or 2 other people could just come up with something basic to roleplay about in order for me to practice without messing up someone else's roleplay.

I have already seen a guide on how to do it. That isn't really what I'm looking for. I'm the type of person that learns from experience. I was looking for someone to help me practice.

I like to call myself a writer, so I tend to be pretty obsessive over my grammar. I don't really care who it is that helps me as long as you are patient.

Wow, thanks! This has actually helped me a lot, the linked stuff, I'm in a very similar situation. But, now, thinking about it as if I'm writing a story, and that I'm acting through a character - that makes me much more comfortable with it. I may even hop in tonight some time

 

Though I guess I'd have to make a character, first?...

Well, roleplaying is a lot like writing. One of the few differences, though, is that you are writing with a group. Feel free to ask me any questions via PM. I will admit, I am not the best RPer, but I could be some help.

How do you join one? Do you have to catch them as they start, or how do you just hop in partway? I guess, you post in the OOC and ask to join and how, or what?

What you must do first to join a roleplay is to create a character in the Character Database, then you must post a link to your character's profile in the OoC thread. If the roleplay you want to join is already started and has many pages of RP, you should politely ask the RP creator if you can join.

Though I haven't had much action on this site roleplaying, I have ten years of experience in the entire thing. You want help? You got it. I'm about to start RPing here myself. (been a bit busy with modding and stuff. But! I got time now) I'm pretty patient too, and I'm willing to answer any questions you might have. What type of roleplay would you like to do? Ponies? Non-ponies? I was going to actually create an example/tutorialesque roleplay for others to join at some point since some people haven't quite grasped the new system yet.

Super's got you covered, pretty much. I will add to his statement though: If an RP has the prefix "Open," it means you can join in the OOC thread anytime since it is open to all ponies.
