First time drawing ponies - New OC

Raritas

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, today I decided to try and draw an OC. I haven't got one yet, and I was thinking about roleplaying so I kinda need one. So, meet _______ ....... Oh yeah... I don't have a name for him yet...

I'll think of that later.

I drew him with a backpack, hat and a map, so he could be a hiker or explorer, seeing as I like hiking personally. I couldn't decide between an Earth or Pegasus pony, but then I thought, if he was a pegasus, being a hiker would be a bit redundant... So he's an Earth pony for now.

I haven't decided on a Cutie mark either yet, but that'll come later.

Please, any critique or problems you can see, say them. It's my first proper drawing without a reference, so don't expect a masterpiece... tongue.png

Thanks

P.S I know the legs are horrible... XD

The main problem is lack of structure: just drawing parts onto each other makes for a disjointed look.

I'd recommend starting over, using this as a reference guide.

Yeah, I agree. I kinda just ran into this, just to see how it turned out seeing as I've never really tried properly before. I've seen methods like them before, but I'll try it out next time using that reference, thanks. Hopefully it'll look better haha

That's alright for your first time. I know the first time drawing ponies for me was terrible! tongue.png This is way better.

Here's a tip: Try tracing ponies a couple times before you free hand them. It'll help you get used to the pony anatomy. smile.png

Great job for your first time though, and keep it up. Hope to see more from you in the future!

Well, its already really good for your first attempt on drawing ponies. My profile picture displays how terrible I draw for ponies in another style and it was my first try. Dunno why I put it as a profile pic though. 3_3

Absolutely love him fierce expression, ready for adventure and all that, what?

Anatomy wise I would just go and study actual horses. I know MLP ponies are stylized but the way they move is pretty natural and especially the walking, trotting and galloping cycles are very well thought out because they move like actual equines. Also ponies and horses are gorgeous animals so there is lots of fun studying them. I won't lie, they are also very difficult to draw but you have to start somewhere, yes?

Still, his expression is very good, those aren't the easiest to make clear either, well done :D!

Hmm, I think you should practice anatomy. He has too little legs and really big head. But don't give up! Draw, draw and draw, because all artists have to start from something. :3

Try watching a youtube tutorial that will explain it I recommend the tutorial by artalacarte guidelines are the key here

"If you feel the need to treat me like garbage, I'll feel the need to throw you into the back of a compressing garbage truck."

"I'd rather "go to hell" for hugging a guy I like then makeout in heaven with a girl I don't."

"If someone has the intention of changing who you are, or stopping you from doing what you like, bite out your tongue before they can change you"
