The writers backtracking on Scootaloo's attributes(singing, sappiness) twice

So what's up with the writers changing Scootaloo to suit the episode? In the show stoppers, it's shown quite clearly that she can't sing well. Come one bad apple, she sings great.

In the cutie mark chronicles, she shows increasing disgust at the increasing sappiness and heartwarming nature of the stories. But then along came hearts and hooves day, and she's floating in the air AAWWW-ing with the rest of the crusaders when Big Mac and Cheerilee drink the love potion.

Of course no character stays completely consistent in the show, but both of those are polar opposites that go against the character they were trying to develop.

Possible explanations: About singing. Since it's one of those songs that is actually being acknowledged as singing, it's different than just a random song out of nowhere, the kind where everything just goes back to normal once it's done, like it didn't actually happen.     Example: Sweetie Belle sings amazing in the perfect stallion song, which is a song out of nowhere, while during her campfire song she sounds horribly off-key, and is a song that is being ackowledged as actually happening.

About the sappiness: At the end of the episode Rainbow Dash was okay with their group hug, so despite her sigh when Applebloom and Sweetie hugged her, she stopped caring because Rainbow was okay with it. Either that, or she just cares that much about Cheerilee that it overrode her aversion to sappy stories.

This is actually a pretty common thing I see in kids, particularly boys. When anything sentimental is mentioned they tend to scoff at it presumably to maintain an outer image of toughness or some such thing. However when a holiday arrives and the behavior is encouraged by everyone around them you tend to see a change in their behavior, at least in my experience. Not to mention that in this case she was attempting to help an friend get a special somepony because they thought she should have one. So of course she got excited when anticipating the success of their plan. When it actually came down to it they were all disgusted by the mushy love talk.

This seems pretty in line with what we know of Scootaloo's personality. She likes to put on this outer image of awesomeness and to a degree it is a large part of who she is. However she thinks she needs to hide anything she perceives to not equate to coolness. In Sleepless in Ponyville we see this mentality. Scootaloo tortures herself to maintain this tough outer image thinking that if she broke it even for a second Rainbow Dash and her friends would perceive her as weak.

I cant say whether or not that was the intended way it was written but its something I connected in my experience of instructing after school programs.

Well your missing the point of Scoot's original scoffing.

she was in a hurry to hear rainbows story and all the sappy stuff was getting in the way of

1

listening to her idol

2

getting her cutie mark which clearly to her was the best way to go about doing it.

She's a freak in cutie crusader.  That's serious business.  (that could be a internet meme lol).

Hmm.  For the Babs Seed song, I like to pretend that it was just AB and Sweetie singing (it was in fact just two voice actors).

As for her seemingly inconsistent sappiness, I don't think she was "happy" for Big Mac as much as she was "amused" by his behavior.  Scootaloo must think it's pretty ironic for such a big, stalliony pony to get affectionate with Cheerilee.

And in any event, it's shown in Sleepless In Ponyville that her tough girl image is just as much a facade as Rainbow Dash's.

1. Well for the Babes Seed song, your not going to have 2 characters sing well and one sing like crap. It would ruin the song.

2. Scootaloo was most likely happy about the job they did for their teacher. Just because u don't like to be sappy does not mean at times you can feel happy for someone.
