@,

Mael relaxed slowly. Not a monster? She was about to believe Granite until she brought herself back again and tensed up. No...It's a trick...he's one of the shape shifting demons...She eyed him warningly as the mare closed her wings fearfully against her sides.

"You don't have to pretend with me. I know you're one of them. You're just here to finish off the job your friends did with my frien..." another tear fell from her eye as she gritted her teeth in helpless anger, "you're all monsters! I hope you die slow and painfully!" Mael couldn't keep herself from weeping, mostly due to her hunger but also her grief. There was so much fear in her eyes that misted with tears.

It was no good; the noise was going to draw the creatures back.  What in Equestria am I supposed to do?  Why do I always end up in these situations!?  He could tell that the mare was obviously afraid of him, but the golem could think of little he could do to calm her down.  He frantically motions for her to stay quiet again, but he knows it won't do much.

Suddenly Granite remembered the food he had picked up in the abandoned apartment.  Perhaps I can use that to help...  Hoping it was still safe to eat, he reaches to pull it from his small bundle of supplies...

...And drops one of the cans on the concrete.  The sound makes him flinch, and he quickly grabs the food and places it in the small hole towards the mare.  "Here, you can have this, but we should really be leav-"

Too late.  He heard them before anything, giving Granite time to turn around and face the direction they were coming from.  The trio of small demons he had seen before had heard the sound of the can striking the concrete and had come to investigate.  Of course.  This is what happens when I try to help somepony...

Still facing the demons, he speaks quietly to the mare in the hiding place behind him.  "Never mind what I just said, you should stay in there..."  He wasn't too concerned with just three of the small creatures - Granite's worry was that there may be even more close by.  "If you're lucky they don't know you're there."

Granite shrugs off the meager supplies he had been carrying - they would only get in his way.  I should be able to take on such a small number of them...  If more show up, I'll lead them away from here.  I wonder if I'm about to learn if they eat stone or not...  This is such a drag.

Mael relaxed a little once again, her stomach growling yearningly for the food. She wanted it so badly that her mouth salivated hungrily. The stone pony...creature seemed to have no intention of harming her and was undoubtedly worried about the demons outside, though she didn't see any when she went into her hole. Still..."You expect me to trust you?..." The young mare's body ached horribly as she laid uncomfortably. The bruises on her had swollen and her scraps itched painfully against the concrete exterior. All I have is chance now...Either way I'm dead...I hope he's not one of them...but if he is... Mael lowered her ears and closed her eyes as she spoke weakly and fearful, "I...would get out but I'm hurt pretty bad." She looked to her hooves that were covered in scraps and swells when she had tried to run away and squeeze into the tight hole.

Granite continued to stare in the direction he knew the demons to be coming from, though he did spare a moment to glance back at her when she mentioned her injuries.  Of course it would be more complicated...  Come on, think of something...

"Would you be strong enough to hold on to me?"  He couldn't believe what he was suggesting even as he said it, but it was the only option he could see.  Well, that or fight.  I am NOT a pack horse!  This is not going to be happening on a regular basis!

"I helped a small group of survivors a few blocks away not long ago, if we move quickly I may be able to find them again before they slip away.  You can't run with those injuries...  I can carry you if there is no other option though.  You should decide quickly, we'll likely have company soon."  It sounded to the golem as though the sounds of the demons were getting closer; they would likely be visible soon.

"If you can't...  Just try to stay hidden in there.  I'll do what I can to drive them away from your hiding place."

@,

Mael could see that the pony genuinely wished to help her...but there was no use. She did not want somepony to die because of her again. The mare couldn't help but turn her head away from Granite to hide the tear that trickled once more down her cheek. "Go..." she trembled. "Go to your friends...The old world is over and it's every pony for themselves. Trying to help me will only get you killed." She then curled up tightly, doing her best to ignore the pulsing nerve endings firing all throughout her body. "Please go...

The miniature demons were for the most part, plump from their...improvised meal. The screeched and giggles as they looked around for any trace of the ponies they had been chasing. The swarm began to split hungrily as some returned underground while others buzzed in search of more prey. A small group of them had heard a familiar noise from some of the rubble by chance not far from their area, their keen hearing and snakelike vision eagerly observing the area from which the noises emerged from. Giggling a little they landed quietly and tiptoed to where they had heard the noise in order to not disturb their meal before its time. It was as though satisfying their hunger was all that was important the fiendish imps.

Muddle's shadow was begin crushed by the pony's hug. What made this odd, was that it was being crushed at all. It would normally phase through other object or ponies, but now it was being compressed into Muddle's stomach. It raised it hoof and gave Muddle a hard slap to face, causing her to wake up in the stallions grasp. "Um... Can you let go of me..."

The silence that had descended could be a good thing...  Or it could be a very bad thing.  With Granite's luck, he was assuming it was a bad thing.  She doesn't want my help.  I should just go now and leave her to fend for herself.

"Go to your friends...The old world is over and it's every pony for themselves. Trying to help me will only get you killed."

The golem lets out a loud sigh, still watching the perimeter of the area for movement.  The pale flames behind his eyes flicker calmly while his unblinking stare scans the edges of the clearing.  "Friends?  Abominations don't have friends, girl."  Sheesh, is this going to happen every time I try to help somepony?  Maybe it would be better if I actually had a master this time, it's certainly less work for me.

"And as for getting killed, I can't really tell the difference anymore.  Am I alive or dead right now?  My dreaming was so wonderful, I'm inclined to believe this is the nightmare and the other side is my life."  With this he turns to glance at the hiding mare again.

"But...  If this is a dream, than I have little to worry about.  Staying to help will at the worst send me into another dream.  And if this truly is the waking world, than if I were to leave I would condemn a living, breathing pony to the longest sleep of all...  Something which I do not wish upon another soul."  Why in Equestria am I being so stupid?  I'm a monster, a machine, not some kind of hero.  If she doesn't hurry, I'm not going to have any choice but to leave.

I mean not knowing about the princesses is pretty rare." he inquired, tone full of interest.

@,

The tired mare looked once more to granite in silence...before gasping as she tugged and pushed herself painfully to attempt to leave her hole that she had been in for more than a day now. Mael couldn't help but whimper softly as she tried to tug herself free, putting all she had into getting out. Then, with a strong relieving breath she was out and laid pitifully on the ground right outside the small prison. She grimaced as she fought to gain her footing, falling down countless times before wobbling on her hooves. Mael sighed quietly before trying a small smile as she looked to granite, sweat going down her face, "You...think too much." Her voice was strained as the mare ignored her aching body. "Lets...go." Suddenly she fell roughly to the ground, gritting her teeth as she realized her legs had locked up a great deal.

Granite was trying to keep watch while the mare fought to get out of her hiding place, still not liking the silence that had descended upon the scene.  When she told him that he 'thinks too much', he turned his gaze back to her in time to see her fall again.  The golem kneels down to help her up, willing to carry her if it came to that.

"I've found I have quite a bit of time to think.  The unfortunate part of that is being able to recall everything upon reaching a certain threshold."   This isn't good...  If she's in that bad of a state, we're going to look like a prime target for those little beasts.

Mael felt guilty with the stone pony staying by her side even with the condition she was in. It wasn't fair to him that she was like this. As soon as Granite helped her back up, she glared determinedly forward as she stomped forcefully forward. Her adrenaline began to pump as she had hoped, not entirely nulling the pain but giving her the force to push on. The mare did her best to remain quiet as she growled in pain at each forceful step she took, her focus entirely up ahead...then, she stopped dead in her tracks as a group of faint squeals were heard to her left. The terror became more than visible in her eyes when she looked back to Granite...He should have left me...

@@Aerodynas,

Granite had decided that he much preferred the silence...  It was the inane sounds he was hearing now that he couldn't stand.  His hopes had started to rise when the mare had been able to walk on her own, but the squeals had quickly dashed that hope.  When she looked back to him with fear in her eyes, he let out a small sigh and turns to their left, in the direction of the sounds.

Of course...  There's no way she can fight, not in that condition.  She can barely move.  "Go to the right, into the alley...  The second door you pass is opened, you can hide in there.  I will be right behind you once you make it into the alley."

As he spoke Granite turned to face the direction the sounds were coming from.  If I'm lucky they'll be intimidated by what I am...  That may at least make them hesitate long enough for her to get to the alley.  He brings one of his front hooves up and slams it back into the ground, enough force behind his stone hoof to crack the concrete where he stands.  "I'll hold them off until you can get there.  If we get to the alleys we should be able to slip away from them."

@,

Mael couldn't believe Granite's bravery...it reminded her of...Now isn't the time to think about that. The mare nodded weakly before stumbling to maintain her rushed walk. It was like watching an old pony without their cane. She pushed furiously as she knew what was coming...No...I can't let this happen a second time! The mare suddenly turned angrily, almost tripping over herself as she stopped, "I won't leave you here to die! Without your help, I'll be dead any-" Interrupted by the sound of screeching demonic laughs, the small group of six demons Granite had encountered earlier erupted from behind some rubble. They immediately began flying berserkly at Granite and Mael, licking their lips hungrily.

"Three..." Suddenly, the screeches were drowned out by the sound of automatic weapons popping countless shots into the beasts the practically imploded as the bullets pierced their bodies. Some of the bullets whizzed past them and zipped off the rubble as they swarmed frantically and tried to flee; however, it was to no avail with the wall of supersonic metal blasting through them. As the last one fell, all that sounded was the wind-like echo of the guns and the light tings of the casings falling to the ground.

Granite wasn't entirely sure what had just happened.  He had been prepared for a fight, but...  The demons erupting into gunfire was not something he had expected.  He backs up towards Mael, glancing back and forth to try and pinpoint where the shots had originated from.  "What...  What was that?"

He turned to look at the mare briefly.  She was going to stay anyways.  Noble...  Stupid, but noble.  He didn't look at her for too long - there was still the matter of the gunfire for him to concern himself with.  Just because they filled the demons with holes doesn't necessarily mean they're friendly.  Especially in my case.  I wonder if we were saved from the demons just for our saviors to mistake me for a monster...  Tch, most likely with my luck.

@,

Mael had already hit the ground instinctively and had screamed while the bullets flew. When they stopped, she remained on the ground, too weak to move abruptly again. She moaned as the pain returned to her thoughts.

Suddenly a bunch of clicks were heard as many ponies reload their weapons. There was a sound either than that coming from them though, a very strange one. The sound was a breathing but more muffled and staticy, and it came right from behind the two. "Two survivors? And peculiar one's at that...how oddly familiar." The voice was strained and hoarse but educated and melancholic.

Granite didn't turn around at the voice - he didn't move at all by this point.  In his experiences, sudden movements only served to hurt his position in times like these.  "By peculiar, I assume you're referring to me."  He spares another glance at Mael.  Perhaps I wouldn't stand out so much if I were to hit the ground at the sound of gunfire as well...  It is somewhat odd, I suppose...

"Look, you can decide what to do with me later, but the mare is hurt.  At least get us somewhere safe first."  He still hadn't gotten a good look at their rescuers, otherwise he would have suggested they take her and not him.  But there was still the possibility they were bandits or the like rather than honest ponies - he had encountered at least one group of them since waking up, and he wasn't about to leave the wounded mare to their kind.  Hmm, I just realized I don't even know her name.
