(Fun fact: one of my friends uses this as a caller-specific ringtone for myself.  This pleases me far more than it should.)

 

I've seen too many references here to Dangan Ronpa to resist starting this.  Apparently it has more popularity than I was aware of.  I checked to see if there was already a topic for this, and came up with nothing.  There's always the possibility that I missed it though...

 

Anyways, this is a thread to discuss all things despair Dangan Ronpa related, whether it be the games, the anime, or anything else.  PLEASE REMEMBER TO PUT ANY SPOILERS IN SPOILER TAGS!  because I haven't gotten around to the Let's Play for the sequel yet.

 

To anyone who has no idea what I'm talking about, Dangan Ronpa is a murder-mystery game from Japan featuring a cast of high school students and a talking teddy bear.  In a way, it's somewhat similar to the Ace Attorney games, though with a much darker tone.  If you're interested, you can probably find a Let's Play of it (I read it through Somethingawful forums, though you have to be a paid member to read it now), watch a sub of the anime, or wait for the game to be released in English for the PS Vita in early 2014.

What good timing . I just got into Dangan Ronpa a few weeks ago and am currently going through a Let's Play of it with , who's read it already. It's definitely the first time I've been so captivated just by reading a Let's Play of something, and the story's kept me hooked for pretty much the whole time. I'll probably be looking at the sequel as well, if possible.

 

My favorite characters are Fujisaki, Asahina, Naegi, Togami and Ishimaru

Yeah, the story is exceptionally well done.  I wasn't too keen on it at first, but it picked up very quickly and I couldn't stop reading.  I was furious when the forum threw up a pay-wall as soon as I started reading the final chapter...  If you haven't finished it yet, you still have quite a bit of awesome stuff coming!

 

My favorite characters were probably Fujisaki, Ishimaru, Asahina, Oogami (she's bizarre, but she grew on me), and Mondo.

I'm one of the only people here who likes this series

 

So, by now I've read through most of chapter 4 of Super Dangan Ronpa 2 and I'm liking it even better than the original. Characters are roughly the same quality, with Peko, Kuzuryuu and especially Komaeda being the huge standouts for me. The trials are also way better as well. Each of the three I've read so far

Like Chapter 2's :( :( :( :(

have been among the best and most memorable in the series.

Oh boy. I blitzed through the anime last weekend and it's gotta be the best anime series I've seen in a while to have made me do that. Each episode just left me on the tips of my toes wanting to move foward because of just how awesome it is. I'll definitely watch the playthroughs later as well even tho I know the story. Kinda surprised I'm the only one here so far who really liked Kirigiri. I shamelessly ship her and Naegi

It's not that I don't like her, it's more that I didn't really find her as interesting of a character.  To me, she just sort of sat around and had all of the answers (though for some reason wouldn't say them until Naegi came to the conclusion), kind of like Mia Fey from the Phoenix Wright series.  I'm sure there's more to her though.

 

And yes, you should definitely watch playthroughs/read let's plays.  If anything, the game actually finishes the story. (the anime didn't actually conclude it, right?  If they did, they must have gone through it ridiculously fast...)

I love this series! I've read the LP of the first game and the first two trials of the second and I have this... knack for liking the worst possible characters.

 

Favorite character in the first game is Togami, and favorite character in the second game is Komaeda. I also immediately took a liking to Kuzuryuu due to his introverted nature and similarity to Togami from the first game. I also actually quite liked Naegi, and REALLY liked Hinata. Hinata's so refreshingly brusque and take-charge, it's great.

 

DashForever and I formed this joke about Naegi having a lifelong fear of chickens from this chapter.

It's true that I had some trouble relating to her in the beginning but she started to grow on me when she and Naegi decided to trust each other, and altho they had some difficulty at first, she was willing to cut him slack and forgive him. Not to mention when she came to his rescue. While Naegi did form his conclusions, I doubt he could've done it without her help and her investigative skills.I also really liked Genocider Shou tho Her crazy attitude which just screamed wild murder was epic, nvm the irony that she was one of the survivors as well

Yess, I found a thread for this! ^.^ I watched the entire anime last month, and I found it amazing. I've always kind of loved murder mysteries like that, and Dangan Ronpa constantly had me on my toes.

 

I have to say my favorite characters are Togami, Fujisaki, and Kirigiri. Lol and Genocider Shou, she was hillarious.

Kinda surprised I'm the only one here so far who really liked Kirigiri. I shamelessly ship her and Naegi

 

I actually like Kirigiri quite a bit, even more than I used to. She's grown on me somewhat since I've finished the first game. While her nature as a very distanced and cold person might be off-putting to some, she's very human underneath it all, at the end of it. The later parts of the game/anime show that pretty well.

 

And her and Naegi are really cute together

Unfortunately, that translation doesn't have all of the series yet, but I can give you some links to some somewhat inferior but still adequate LPs if you're interested, after you get through chapter three. Like I said, I think it really will be better than the first one, in the end

Honestly, I felt that it started out being rather boring.  It felt exactly like DR1, even using ridiculously similar characters (particularly Naegi Jr. Dark Naegi Komaeda and Togami).  Then suddenly Monobear shows up and everything suddenly picked up, which is sort of odd because that makes it even more similar to DR1.  I guess the main thing that intrigued me was how it was revealed that Usami/Monomi is not a villain... I think.  I don't really know what to think of her honestly...

 

I kind of expected Togami to be the first to be axed off; he just had way too much control over the situation to survive.   However, I played right into their hands in thinking that Komaeda was the killer, until they began to come to that conclusion in the trial way too early...

 

I like all of the characters so far (Komaeda as representing corrupted hope is a really cool idea) with maybe the exception of Nidai (I find his character quirks of screaming and constantly needing to take a shit to be rather annoying  ).

 

 

Anyways, I'm enjoying it so far, and hope to continue it soon!

To be honest, while I did take an immediate liking to Kuzuryuu and Komaeda amused me ("It's like Naegi from the outside!"), I don't think I initially enjoyed the cast as much either.

 

Then the first trial and KOMAEDA. Not only is he a horribly good deconstruction of Naegi, but also you have the unprecedented situation where somebody who attempted murder in-game is hanging around. I suppose you had Genocider last time, but Komaeda's way scarier to me. Somehow I never suspected him during the first trial at all.

 

Also, the first trial of this game was a kind of interesting variation on the first trial of the first game with the "culprit trying to stop a killer, proof is found by the person's SHL talent in some way, the person you trusted was the failed but attempted murderer" deal.

I'll admit that it took me a little bit to warm up to, but I think that SDR2 will leave you very satisfied in the end. I just finished it earlier this afternoon and while it definitely has its "meh" characters, the trials are overall on another level, and its best characters and scenes can match the original's, easily.

Please excuse me as I crawl into a hole, curl up in a ball, and sink into a deep depression.  (But I liked Peko!!!  )  This trial was absolutely brilliant. There were so many twists and turns, but it somehow still made perfect sense.

 

I wasn't sure who was going to get axed off in this chapter, but I certainly didn't expect Koizumi.  As for the murderer, I actually thought that it was Sonia for a while (Kuzuryuu and Saionji were too obvious, and... well, maybe I just don't like Sonia that much), and never even considered it to be Peko until they brought up having to wash off the blood.

 

Also, what they're doing with Kuzuryuu now is what I feel they should have done with Togami in the last one.  Togami was just so unlikable to me, and (if I remember correctly) he remains unlikable even when he decides to work with the rest of the team.  With Kuzuryuu, you actually feel bad for him and understand why he seems to hate everyone so much, and that there's actually a human being under his skin.

 

So yeah, an even more excellent trial than the last one.

For once, I guessed the murderer right in this second one . The water thing helped me get Peko right away, though I was so pleased with myself that I completely glossed over how defensive Kuzuryuu was being of her, and I paid the price. She suckered me just as well as everyone in the game. That was such an intense and sad trial though . It narrowly edges out SDR2 trial five for my favorite

Additionally, to anyone who doesn't know, some guy is actually in the process of doing an Abridged Series of the anime, and it's quite good!  I think that a lot of the jokes are more specific to the anime rather than the game, but it's still fun to watch.
