if the north does take the wasteland the land is still going to have the scars of the wasteland like  taint radiation tho radiation can subdue on it's own but it takes thousand of year take chernobyl as an example. taint can't be cleaned off can be cured tho.

They aren't trying to cure the wasteland. They are trying to unite the wasteland. And they found some interesting stuff in some locations up in the North. Nothing that can cure radiation, but biological items of interest.
