How much should I charge for commissions?

Enigma

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I've been doing some requests etc for people and money is becoming an issue so I need to start taking commissions. Ideally I need to make £100 ($160) a month at least and it's about 60p per $1 exchange rate for me so this may influence how much I should charge.

I would be taking commissions for portrait, full body, and group images (max 4). All would be coloured and shaded like in my examples below, I don't think I'll be giving options for just lineart, flat colouring (no shading), or sketches. I would also be doing simple backgrounds like the examples below at no extra charge if they want it.

I was originally thinking $10 for busts (they'd be quite large) +$5 for each extra character with an unlimited amount of extra characters and $20 for full body image +$10 for each extra character with a max of 4. Would this be too much?? Remember the exchange rate for dollars into my currency isn't great o wo;;;;;

ANYWAY, enough talk, to my artsies...

Your art certainly unique and is nicely done in my opinion (which means I have another stellar artists to watch on DA).  Given the caliber of your work, I would say that the prices you presented would be more than fair for what they buyer would be recieving.  Perhaps a little too fair in hindsight, but these seem like good starting points and can be risen slightly if demand for your work is high enough and you become more established.

In the end, it is striving to find that middle ground for what to charge that you want, especially when starting out.  You do not wish to charge to little, as you may be practically giving away your work and will be doing a great disservice to yourself both artistically and financially.  You also do not want to charge an exorbitant amount for obvious reasons as well.

I do wish you the best of luck in your artistic endeavours, though I have little doubt that you will do well.  And if you/when you do begin to take on commission, you can also seek for a commission shop here on the forums as well.  Take care!
