Are people more accepting of lesbian couples?

I may sound like an ignorant ranting idiot and I don't know if its just me but, it feels like society seems to be much more accepting lesbian couples rather than male couples.

This may sound stupid when I bring it up but, I feel that if people weren't as accepting of lesbian couples Katy Perry's "I kissed a girl" song wouldn't be as popular as it has. (lol)

I honestly feel like if she had been a guy singing about kissing another guy, people would freakout and talk about how terribly wrong the song is, and how they should "remove it from every shelve of every store and take it off of itunes". Now, I know you could argue that there was controversy behind this song as it is and, not everybody was 100% accepting of it but, still...   -_-

I might be looking to much into it when I say this but, I feel it even seems to be more relevant within our fandom when it comes to shipping characters.

I see so many more female female character shippings than I do male x male shippings. You could also argue here that there are more female character shippings because the number of females on the show seem to out weigh the male characters or, that more people just like to see their two best ponies together but even so, I don't see why this is so.

Yeah, yeah I know it sounds like Im just ranting about shipping, Katy Perry and, lesbian couples but, I really want to see everybody else's thought on this.

I think you misunderstand. Guys are much more accepting of lesbian couples, especially if said couple is attractive. Women are much more accepting of gay couples, especially if said couple is attractive. I don't know why, especially since logically guys should be disappointed that those two attractive girls are never going to go out with them, and vice versa for the women with the gay guys, but that just seems to be how it is.

I agree. Even the slightest hint/mention of or about lesbians makes the guys laugh, and we all seem to be okay with it. The girls at school, still think it's gross. But when something 'gay' happens, everyone (boys and girls) think it's gross. That right there basically says it. It seems to indeed be the case. But it could as well be teenage ignorance.

It most likely is lol

Realistically, they are.  Why they are, that I've got no clue.  At my school, there are several out lesbians and not a single out gay guy.  You can see lesbians kiss, but you won't see two guys kiss.  I don't really get this either.

As someone who's thinks he's bisexual (I'm not sure, but you can never be sure of your sexuality) I feel that most girls can befriend male couples more than guys will befriend lesbian couples while bisexual people just party hardy. But, if you're talking about acceptance with the same type (Women accepting lesbian couples and men accepting gay couples) goes to the women side... Gay men are becoming more accepted, but lesbian woman are far more accepted by all. Though, this is through my own experience, who knows what it could be like for you.

It really seems that way, I guess people find 2 girls together cuter than 2 guys. I think I personally do, and I don't quite know why. You never want to say no to something cute.

Actually, there is a parody of that song called "I Kissed A Boy", by 'Cobra Starship'.

Back on topic, I don't think it's more "accepted" but as more preferred to the people. People think lesbians are hot, while I think opposite, despite being bisexual myself. I enjoy guys together more than girls together, but that's just what I enjoy seeing more. It all just depends on who you're talking to.

I think the other sex doesn't mind. Guys singing about liking eachother would get a lot of hate from males. Lesbians aren't hated as much as gay guys because Men love them and girls could care less. I feel like it is usually guys that hate on gays. So I agree, people ARE more accepting of lesbians. The girls I sit with at lunch call me gay all the time because I told them I was asexual. They aren't mean about it, just annoying. "Be true to yourself. We will accept you! You HAVE to like one sex or another. It's IMPOSSIBLE to not like anyone!"

They annoy me so much.

If it was a guy they'd be a total jerk about it:

"HA! GAAAAY!"

What bothers me is if a game/movie/book/song has gay content in it, it gets banned in several countries or gets labeled "M" or "A18+" or "R" while male and female kissing gets labeled something for families.

You're back? How was the movie? Anyhow, I find it funny that you're asexual, don't know why XD... And, actually Gay and Female love brings up a lot of controversy all around the world...

I have a question, who's that green guy on your profile pic and siggy? I'm curios.

Tis true it seems like guys like lesbians a lot, obviously. And girls enjoy having a "gay best friend" and a lot support male gay couples. There's always exceptions though.

Since I'm bisexual a lot of guys are like "omg thats sooooo hawt have you scissored a girl? blah blah blah" xD but when GUYS come out as bi/gay most GUYS (in my area at least) are "homophobiac" and "Against it" -_-

I'd have to say yes, I usually go to this Meme site (which is a little bit of a social site) and when people post gifs of two females kissing its upvoted to the heavens, meanwhile one guy posted a picture of two men kissing it was downvoted to hell.

But that's only personal experience.

Well, you see the reason why I didn't mention guys specifically is because Iv asked this same question around to a lot of my female friends and family. They all seem to agree with me on the whole lesbians are more accepted thing and, most of them are for gay couples.

I do not think this is really all of that true, just from personal experience. Among other girls, rumors start flying when they see a lesbian couple, or assume you're a lesbian. I experienced this at work just a few months ago. Of course, I didn't really care about those rumors, but they really thought my friends and I were all sleeping with each other, because... Lesbians sleep with everything that moves. Or something like that.

Guys supposedly find it more acceptable is meaningless. Thinking that two girls kissing is hot, does not equal acceptance. That's fantasy! Any real lesbian/lesbian couple that does not meet their standards of "hot" brings out their true feelings on the matter.

They don't accept the validity of lesbianism, they just find it hot. Hence, when you reject them by telling them that you're lesbian, it doesn't go through their minds as a rejection. "You just haven't found the right man, I'll show you!".

So in reality, I'd say, this is definitely not as it appears on the surface. At least not from my experiences. =/ Maybe it's just where I live.

I don't get that argument the 'You haven't found the right man.' To me, you haven't found the right llama, he/she will make you fall head over heels for the special llama, just watch.

Yes I think although there are people that don't like homosexuals in general I think lesbians are more accepted than gay men. The reason for this is being a gay man is seen as being contrary to masculinity which although there are plenty of effeminate gay men is completely ridiculous. And of course there is the undeniable fact that as other have pointed out a lot of guys are turned on by 2 girls together, me being one of them. I may not get that same reaction from 2 guys going at it, but I try to respect gay men as much as I respect lesbians and everyone else. People are just people as far as I am concerned.

My school is an example. I, in fact, am an example that gay men aren't treated well, And my school is an example of lesbian preference also.

Let me explain now. At my school I think there are 6 out lesbians. I'm the only out LGBT male in the entire school system.

I also happen to be treated much worse than the lesbians. I get bullied a lot, they don't. It's that simple. But it is true that women are more tolerant toward male LGBT than men. My school's bullies are almost all male.

To explain, I think from my own experience, lesbians do often get better treatment.

I think it's more down to the fact that guys like girls, so when a girl likes another girl they can empathise better?

I also think sexualisation / pornography has a big role to play. The amount of lesbian porn floating around in my high school was I was a kid was crazy. You used to get bullied if you didn't think it was "cool".

But in a sense this just as unhealthy a view as it over-sexualises the women.

The best way I saw it put is that society has as weird double standard where a man is no longer a man if he admits attraction to guys, but a woman is perceived as not losing her womanhood for doing the inverse. I think it's because western society has this thing where no-one really considers either gender being masculine bad(as evidenced by the fact we're accepting of tomboys but not drag queens) but a man showing any sort of feminine(or perceived to be) trait is looked down upon.

I'm kind of interested to see what the norms are in someplace like japan that's more accepting of feminine guys.

I think people do accept lesbian couples more because really most guys like lesbian couples and people use gay as a insult so they don't really like Gay couples but they like Lesbian couples O_O

I think it just counts on the person. Unless your gay then your not going to like Gay couples so much but you might not mind them and the same with girls, You might not like lesbians couples but you don't mind them

I don't mind if anyone is gay or lesbian because i see them as the same

To me i think people should not judge anyone on there sexuality

Even if they go out with a animal or an Virtual girl/boy, if that makes them happy then no one should care but thats just what i think

If someone makes you happy going out with them then no one should tell you otherwise
