      It stands for Grand Old Party and I don't know exactly where that term came from.

      It was the first major party established in the USA. (Back when it was known as the democratic republicans.)

      Actually the Democratic Republicans are what later became the modern Democratic party, the Republican party as we know today didn't get formed until shortly before the Civil War with Abraham lincoln being Americas first "Republican" president. The Democratic Republicans or simply Republicans as they were known (only called Democratic Republicans to distinguish them from the modern day Republicans) along with the Federalists were Americas first major two parties.
