I reckon both of your ideas with the dice roll and the counter are perfect. I would say that you have a roll off to see who kills who, with the counter requiring a 4, but the other class requiring a 5 or 6, using a D6, or you could use 2D6 for each of them. In the 2D6 case, I would suggest the counter needs to get an 9 to kill, whilst the other class needs a 10. What do you think of the mechanic?
