It looks like my irrational envy at the lives of others is taking hold of me again, but how can I avoid it if I can't even come to terms with my own life?

That's great. Some people are natural born leaders, I know someone who picked up on the psychology of leadership so well that she was always picked for leadership roles as a kid, and in her first retail job jumped from the front end to manager in only a few months. Unfortunately, I'm not the leader type, no one ever saw it in me. I want to be my own person, but I'm being pulled in all directions and forced to live up to the expectations of others rather than my own.

The only way you live up to your own expectations is to fulfill others expectations and go beyond them. Then you leave them with little choice but to live up your expectations. Be that as it may. You have to understand they WILL notice a change in your behavior and therefore push you away on a more subconscious level. AS my mentor put it, some people you thought were your friends are the same people that you'll just not visit very often and for not as long.
