Gore on EQD - Art, Journalism, and Self-Censorship
Suukorak replied to Suukorak's topic in General Discussion
True, but in that case, why does it make a difference in this instance? Would it be different if the picture were under news? Also, is that a thing? Show staff aren't allowed to read fanfics? -
Yeah, me too. They'll figure it out eventually; we just have to make sure not to buy badly done DLC.
-
There's another side to some of this. I have to say I never saw the point of DLCs for skins, or hats, or what-have-you. But real game content makes some sense to me. As long as the base game is reasonably complete, think of DLCs not as locked portions of the game, but expansion packs. Opportunities for people with a bit more money and a love of the game to get a bit more of it. I have nothing against that, and in fact appreciate that it's more practical now than ever before. I do admit, some DLC is just bad. It can be done right, though, and I hope it will.

Gore on EQD - Art, Journalism, and Self-Censorship
Suukorak replied to Suukorak's topic in General Discussion
@, certainly. But I'm not asking about the art. I'm asking about the journalism. Should EQD have shown this art? @. I'm certainly not all that stoic, but nor am I as squeamish as some people might be, and I was disconcerted by the image. So yes, I believe people could get an upset stomach over this. @@Jeric, I take your point, although in my opinion the blood being green doesn't make it much less gory. As for the self-censorship question, it seems to me you're responding to it in a legal sense. And I agree with you there. However, I meant it more in a principle/journalistic-ethics sense. @@Nuke87654, I agree. However, I doubt people would want to hide all fanfics just to avoid certain pictures. And also, I'm pretty sure nobody saw it coming yet, so they can't filter until after the fact. @@Gearbox10mm, perhaps you misunderstood me. I'm not advocating forced censorship - that's why I called it self-censorship. What I meant was: Should EQD, knowing that both outsiders evaluating the community and children will be on their site, tailor the fandom's image through what they choose to post? Or should they just represent the fandom as evenly as possible? Or, as has come up already, should they just do what they want, with no reference or responsibility to anyone else despite their influence? I'm not asking what you would force Sethisto to do. I'm asking what you would do in his place. -
So, recently on Equestria Daily, this post went up: http://www.equestriadaily.com/2015/04/story-updates-april-13th_13.html I didn't read the fanfics mentioned or anything, but the cover picture really caught my attention. It's Twilight decapitating a Changeling. Green blood everywhere. I'm not queasy looking at it or anything, but it surprises me that this got to be on the front page of EQD, given the gore. Now, that picture is the cover picture for the fanfic as well, so the post is being representative of its source. At the same time, EQD is a very popular and very famous site. I'm sure some of MLP's target audience has found it, and many people from outside are likely to form opinions about our fandom based on what they see there. Sethisto and the other EQD people have great power, and thus great responsibility. When they wanted to feature sexually suggestive art on their "Drawfriend" posts, they'd just give a link with a warning ("NSFW" or "Saucy", I think it was). So why did this picture not only get into the post, but become its cover picture? I'm curious what you all think of this. Should EQD be responsible for filtering what's submitted for "decency" or some similar criterion? Should they just be as representative as they can of the fandom, come what will, and leave PR out of it? Other thoughts? Also, bear in mind I'm not saying that people shouldn't make this art. I'm just doubting whether it should be featured so prominently on such a widely accessible site. Here's the image, in case it gets taken down or anything. Warning: gory.

My problem with Fimfiction.net (Discrimination)
Suukorak replied to Tom Snyder's topic in General Discussion
Why don't we all calm down for a moment. We're not here to insult each other. @, I think you have to decide what you want this thread to be. Are you: 1. asking for advice? 2. venting a frustrating turn of events? 3. trying to find a way to get that apology you want? ... something else? Your answer will determine what people understand and how people respond to this thread. Also: if you really want us to judge what's been going on, perhaps you would consider giving a fully-detailed account of everything that's happened. A conversation history, or a continuous narrative of what's happened, would help us figure out what's been going on and give advice or understand better. Right now, the story is a bit jumbled and hard to figure out. As it stands, it's wide open for misunderstanding. -
Would you give your life for the fandom?

@ Woah. Awesome... Thanks! I'm definitely buying this... once I have the time to play it, that is.
-
Yeah, that's, uh... not it. Yes, the Zero's a beautiful bird. No doubt about that. Did they ever make an IL2 for the Western Front? I'd buy that in a heartbeat.
-
Hmm. Given the sort of engagements they would get in on that front, I can see why the Zero would be more useful. Being locked to a landmass is inconvenient in a naval-air war. They might have done better to get a whole different, heavier land-based plane. Would've given them the advantage defending their islands. Just speculating.

I know what you mean. It's not really a flight-sim as much as an "arcade" game (as the setting implies); real flight strategies or piloting skill will get you nowhere in an inferior plane (or with "inferior"/realistic controls). There's a really old WWI game called "Red Baron 3D" that I really love. It's not the most realistic, and the graphics are horrible, but it presents you with the real kinds of choices and challenges pilots would have to deal with: I'm damaged, and it's just the start of an offensive patrol. Should I go home or push on? When should I break off from a dogfight, leaving my mates to die so I can live? Should I at all? etc. Anyone else heard of this game at all? Played it, maybe?
-
@,@@Overlord0909. Okay. I have rather strong opinions on this topic, and I'm about to vent them. Please don't take offense - I'm sure you're both wonderful people, etc. But I want to address this. I feel that frowning on clopping is a bit hypocritical. Now, the point is not how disgusting such-and-such is. The point I'd like to make is more abstract than that. So: 1. We all like ponies. I can hopefully assume that here. Few of us are in the target demographic, and we've made plenty of stuff that isn't intended, or even appropriate, for that target demographic. Fanfictions deal with death, relationships, war, and sexuality. Comics make crude or adult jokes. We've even made games of the Mane 6 - the paragons of friendship - beating each other up for no good reason. So the argument that cloppers are spoiling the innocence of the show is just invalid. Plenty of us are fascinated by its innocence, so much so that we've spoiled it for whoever wants to try to do so long ago. 2. One of the basic ideas behind both the show and our community is the freedom to be yourself, and the privilege of being accepted for being yourself. We accept people of all races, religions, etc. People who used to hate our guts. People of any sexuality under the sun. Yet some of us draw the line to exclude bronies who love the show just as much as the rest of us - but also happen to have a sexual fetish towards them. Because they're violating the purity or sanctity of things we hold dear...? Forgive my comparison, but that's the kind of argument we hear against gay marriage all the time. 3. Nor can we argue that they're shoving this everywhere. Of course a few are, but there are also a few bronies shoving the show down everyone's throats. Doesn't mean the whole fandom is bad, and we're always insisting not to be judged based on those individuals. The great majority of clop sites have what protections seem reasonable in place. We're never really going to be able to keep children and smut completely separate*. If they want to, they can always find it. So just the fact that this kind of stuff is potentially accessible to children just isn't relevant. Any kid who's smart or lucky can find any sort of thing they want. Okay. Vent over. If you have any more arguments, I'll gladly hear them out, but perhaps we should avoid derailing this topic. Thanks for listening to my two cents, anyway. *and, honestly, I kind of doubt the need to. But that's a separate topic. Also, concerning the original topic of the question: I'd like to see the community organize and become a real force for good in the world. We all have so much potential, so much energy we're willing to give. We're already doing some surprising things in our disorder. If we could just focus all that, we'd be amazing. And maybe even better accepted and loved by the outside world.

From time to time. It's a little frustrating, though. Most of my friends have made it to Tier 5 and I'm stuck in Tier 3. Plus, I think the game provides incentives for getting kills rather than completing missions / winning games. For the moment I've retreated to single-player flightsims. But I might come back. Once I have less work to do. Maybe it looks better; but is it good? Can it fly, or fight, better? I honestly don't know. Pacific theater isn't my strong suit.

@@The Soldier, that may just be because more planes are flying now than 20 years ago. I don't know, I'd have to dig up some data to be sure about that. @, I know what you mean. WWI planes FTW then! So light and agile... and an open cockpit makes it that much more visceral. I've actually been up in an open-cockpit biplane (as a passenger, not a pilot) - it was awesome. But noisy. Also, Spitfire in a Spitfire. I've seen that joke coming for so long, but this is the first time I've actually found it being made. @@Orion Caelum, If you like big guns, try these on for size:

I'm rather interested in the Solar Impulse. Any of you guys heard of this thing? http://solarimpulse.com Solar-powered prop plane, making a round-the-world tour (not continuous flight, unfortunately, but still!). It started in Abu Dhabi, and it's gone as far as China now. I'm really excited that it'll eventually pass through New York!

@, that's a great approach to the whole thing. If there were more families like yours, I'm sure religion wouldn't get such a bad rap from the outside and the world would be a happier place for everyone. Also, my inner proofreader has to say something about your run-on sentences. But don't mind him.

Wow. Impressive. Yep, definitely an old bird. Less practical, but no less beautiful. Also historically significant. Hm... what are some cool modern planes... I know! The Warthog! P.S. Goodnight everypony. This is awesome but it's getting late. More awesome tomorrow!

Oh, are we doing pictures now? That's cool. I had the privilege of seeing these beauties fly, at "Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome". Why not a Catalina? My grandparents have a cabin on a lake. I've always wanted to show up one day in this.
-
You've got to go old school, man. I'm talking Nieuport N.11. Or Albatros D.III, if you prefer German engineering.
-
Me, I suppose. What kind of planes do you like to talk about? My personal preference is military planes from WWI-WWII, mostly because those I know the best. I'd be happy to learn about any planes you want to discuss, though.

Have you ever been hit on where it made you uncomfortable?

Have there been, or will there be any midwest bronycons?
