And no, not yet, I don't trade follows like one would do in twitter, I'll follow when/if we end up interacting enough to not just be numbers on the side of the profile.

Yea it’s great to meet cat lovers to that’s fine. I completely understand not everyone is comfortable with following someone right away without getting to know them first.

For me it's bit different reason than what I'm comfortable with, because as you probably have already seen, I have been here a while, and back then instead of follows, there was friends. And shortly put, I still think follows here more as friend requests, and thus I expect more than following me to follow someone. 

I see it as "Hey, you seem interesting, let's be internet friends."
