The Spartans were known for short, terse responses. They believed less was more in terms of conversations so much so they were beaten if they answered questions in school in too wordy a fashion.

Philip of Macedon sent this letter to Sparta:

”You are advised to submit without further delay, for if I bring my army onto your land, I will destroy your farms, slay your people, and raze your city.”
