  1. DAMMIT DAWN, WHY WOULD YOU RECOMMEND NO WAVE TO SOMEONE WHO HAS NO KNOWLEDGE OF NO WAVE. YOU WOULDN'T RECOMMEND HARSH NOISE TO A PUNK ROCK FAN, WOULD YOU?
  2. Weezer. Funny that power pop should be brought up, since I listened to this today. Really great stuff. Shame it took so long to get appreciated, too.
  3. The self titled is definitely a mixed bag. It doesn't quite ring true to what BTBAM would become later, but it's got a ferocity about it that keeps it from being entirely forgettable. And Shevanel Cut a Flip is still one of their best tracks. As for The Great Misdirect, I'd call it a more formulaic version of Colors. It feels very cohesive, which can be good and bad. Colors had a little bit more unpredictability, which I'd say made it more interesting.
  4. For a while, I almost liked Future Sequence more than Colors. After my fanboyishness died down, I saw things more clearly. On a slightly unrelated note, here's my BTBAM albums ranking: 1. Colors (duh) 2. The Silent Circus 3. The Parallax I & II 4. The Great Misdirect 5. Alaska 6. Self-titled If it wasn't for my #2 spot, I might not be on this thread right now. A very different BTBAM is on this album, however. Much more raw and energetic.
  5. Octavarium has the notable distinction of being the only Dream Theater album I've made it through. I've tried Images and Words and Metropolis Part 2, and neither one appealed to me. I just think there are modern prog bands that are much more tasteful and engaging. Not bad, but not good. Anyway, everyone on this thread should hear Sunbather. Black metal fan or not, this is an extremely worthwhile listen for metal fans in general. I really like these interlude tracks.
  6. You can't deny his timeless appeal and incredible talent. He was glorified even before he died. Of course, he's SUPER glorified now, which isn't all well-deserved. I'd call Thriller mandatory listening for anyone who likes music at all.
  7. I've never been a Dream Theater fan, and this didn't win me over. For being a "progressive" band, they sure like to write verse-chorus-verse stuff a lot, don't they (not that all progressive music has to be all artsy-fartsy, but really)? I got the itch to listen to Sunbather again, so I'll do that now. Seems like an album that's giving people that aren't even into black metal (or matal in general) some worthwhile experiences.
  8. I prefer Roads to Judah and their demo over Sunbather, funnily enough. They're all relatively around the same tier of great, though. Strange how Sunbather was their breakout release, rather than their debut.
  9. This was a fun one. Definitely an honorable mention for 2013's black metal releases. Nothing's gonna top my big three of U.M.A., Teethed Glory and Injury, and Sunbather, but Known Flood is worth mentioning too.
  10. Finally listened to some more Autechre outside of Exai, specifically Tri repetae. I liked it. What else can I really say beyond that?
  11. These guys are a hardcore band? By what stretch of the imagination? Anyway, I don't see how Spiderland is a masterpiece. It's great, but how is it the best thing ever?
  12. Altered State is still my AOTY. I actually prefer the absence of harsh vocals; it works better for a band like TesseracT. Can't say I like it more or less than One just yet, though. Just got done with the first track of Llenandose de gusanos by Corrupted. Japanese sludge doom ambient whatever with Spanish lyrics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjNxqTBSFTU That 17 minute piano intro is a bit much.
  13. >not posting the best Swans album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1v3NeGtm_Y This recently took over Soundtracks for the Blind as my favorite Swans record. More songs go more places than on Soundtracks, and it incorporates even more influences.
  14. Two pretty cool things happened recently. A compilation of 10 tracks went out from a group of producers in the metro-ko scene I'm part of. It's basically music that captures the mood of being in a big city with a lot of people around out and yet somehow still being alone. It's an interesting idea that I've made my own contributions to in the past (which I'll get to in a moment). Get the compilation here on a name-your-price basis. As for my own contributions, I've put out an EP in conjunction with the release of this compilation which you can download here. I've done plenty of other work under this name too, dating back to the inception of the metro-ko movement in November 2012.
  15. Best song on Absent Light. I mean, just listen to those glockenspiels and clean guitars and tom drums and all that good shit. By the way, this is reply 8000.
  16. This was tight shit for sure. I'll have to keep listening to it to really give any further analysis; it's one of those albums that I keep finding more to enjoy in with every figurative spin I give it. Still my metal AOTY (and AOTY in general): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmR0gkojHDs Runners up include the new Nails album... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PlaTR2gpWY ...and this little gem straight out of Italy. Progressive black metal a la Krallice but in space. Fantastic genre fusion.
  17. The superior Descendents album: By a long shot. Pretty much the only pop punk album that I'm comfortable calling a masterpiece.
  18. They're a pop punk band, as are many bands that sadly have the emo label attached to them nowadays. More of my favorites in emo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiUPRANCnPk
  19. Depends on what you mean by emo. If you mean this: Then you're wrong. But if you mean this: Then you need to reevaluate. Only the more prominent brostep craze. There's a lot of great stuff in the genre. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtzAl9lgJOo As we've brought up countless times in this thread, there's more rappers than your Tygas and Lil Waynes and Rick Rosses and 2 Chainzes. Have a drug rap that's actually a lot of fun.
  20. https://vk.com/wall-45540584_1167 Preview for the new Born of Osiris record, Tomorrow We Die ∆live. Sounds like a hybrid of A Higher Place and The Discovery. Definitely copping this when it comes out. There's also something else I wanted to bring attention to: Dragged Into Sunlight's Hatred for Mankind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMzYSwIhJNs One of the grimiest death black doom whatchamacallits I've come in contact with. Ever.
  21. The new vocalist is actually from Last Chance to Reason :V Gonna need to look into this band soon, because I've been delaying that for a while.
  22. The Lonely Island is funny when they're not being The Lonely Island. That's all I have to say on the matter. OT: Free jazz is far more than just playing as many notes as you can at once. It's about listening to what everyone else around you is doing and responding musically (or non-musically, in many cases). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScME4cv2qXI
  23. Really quite impressed with this record. It's only going to get better with repeated listens. Can't wait for more to go up from this record so I can share it with y'all. Planning to listen to this in a while as well.
  24. In Flames is no way in hell going to return to their roots. I wish people would stop comparing their new output to The Jester Race.
  25. Grooving on Sunn O))) right now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvqpe8muxaU O'Malley and Anderson need to get off their asses and get a new album out there. It's been four years.
