Hive King 2,001 June 9, 2014 Share June 9, 2014 I guess her name is "Twilight" means her skin is darker? Honestly, black or white works fine by me, though if she's doing power magic and an aura, I prefer white, mostly because it looks better when surrounded by a crackling aura of energy "Aren’t we the same? You know, aren’t you carrying the same mindset as I am? Just because you couldn’t bear to lose, you lost your precious partner! You really call yourself a true duelist? You’re the complete opposite of that!" -Weevil Underwood
Banul 3,831 June 10, 2014 Share June 10, 2014 (edited) Does it matter? You can't judge what a fictional pony character's skin color would be based on they way that they would act, so claiming that her personality makes her white is dumb. That's a little too close to stereotypes for comfort. So, it's really up to the artist what a purple unicorn princess would look like if she were human. I'm honestly a little bummed that people are claiming that artists make her black out of some kind of "social justice quota" or to get attention. That sort of sentiment kind of scares me, it's dangerously close to ridiculing somebody for depicting people of color. I get that the so called "social justice warriors" can seem obnoxious at times, but not every depiction of a none white person is an attempt to shove political correctness down your throat. Sometimes, a person just wants different skin tones represented in their humanize pony fan art. Frankly, it's more intersting to look at that way than a bunch of people with the same skin tone. If you want to draw them all as white, that's fine. But we shouldn't be getting on people's cases for drawing them with different skin colors for ASSUMED reasons of attention mongering. cuteycindyhoney 13,307 June 10, 2014 Share June 10, 2014 Does not. Sorry, but dark brown does not look good with purple or pink. At all. That's not to be racist (I'm half black ffs), but it's true. It looks bad. I beg to differ. I really like this look for human Twilight. Besides, Tom Servo is gettin' the love here. You can't go wrong with that! 2 Thank you Sparklefan1234!!! Carbon Maestro 1,003 June 10, 2014 Share June 10, 2014 Maybe because Twilight's pony body color has a dark saturation, and it's only natural that the artist matches chroma with the original. If not, then you might not get the contrast you'd expect. "You learn a lot about people when you listen to the songs that mean something to them." Espurr 449 June 10, 2014 Share June 10, 2014 I think they're trying not to be racist. I like it. I don't care what pony you like because I like everypony!
Kay Dreamer 884 June 10, 2014 Share June 10, 2014 Eh, I don't really think I've seen deep or dark brown work with purple. Here: That looks dark brown to me, and yeah.....they don't really compliment each other. Well, taste in colour is subjective, particularly as many individuals see hue slightly differently. (I'm a person who can score 100% on those colour tile tests.) So neither of us are right or wrong here. I don't think that example looks too bad, but it could certainly be better. Again, I'd have gone with a cooler brown here; it's not just the 'light or darkness' of the skin, it's the underlying hue. It needs more blues/purples in the base. Her hair is also a little too saturated for my tastes. There are no colours other than the brown and purple either - a few intermediates may have helped unify them. If properly shaded, it would look much better... As it stands, with a flat coloured piece I'd have paid more attention to the interaction between the colours. /end critique The Crystal Minstrel Pony Tumblr Kay Dreamer's Roleplay OC and Cast Character Archive
Glitterheart 64 June 10, 2014 Share June 10, 2014 I think it mostly boils down to appearance + personality of the ponies vs. appearance + personality of a given racial image/stereotype inside the beholder's mind. Obviously everyone is going to see each character's "race" differently because of this. Personally, I have a hard time imagining a human Twilight as being white. I think the color + hair makes me see her as being either south Asian or biracial with some black in her. (Which would make sense, given that her brother is obviously a white [wannabe?] surfer dude.) 1 Hi.
mightyshadowguy 1 February 8, 2019 Share February 8, 2019 I know this is an old forum but I thought I needed to say this. Personality is COMPLETELY independent from race. Maybe some of you just don't have many friends that aren't the same race as you but I really shouldn't have to explain that people of the same race don't all have similar personalities.
Steve Piranha 29,424 February 8, 2019 Share February 8, 2019 Unfortunately, many do so because they have the life to death feeling of filling quotas , but others (myself included), see her with dark skin because her hair contrast pretty well with dark skin . Just look at this hottie 2 Sig by Discords

Guest February 10, 2019 Share February 10, 2019 I kind of like it when it's done well. I feel so long as it looks good together, I am indifferent toward what race she is made.

rainbow_hearts 148 February 17, 2019 Share February 17, 2019 I don't see the problem? Why does it matter to anyone what race she's depicted as? To say that she "doesn't act like it" is extremely racist because the way your personality is doesn't depend on your race. Idk it just seems gross to say something like that.

curbcat 9 March 27, 2019 Share March 27, 2019 Personally, I think it more that many artists want to give more diversity to their renderings of the cast. For me, I do Twi and Sci-Twi as having a slightly darker than white skin tone, and AJ having more of a tanned skin tone, her being an outdoors kind of girl. EpicEnergy 23,218 July 27, 2020 Share July 27, 2020 I've always seen her depicted as light-skinned, I haven't seen any artwork of her dark-skinned before. *totally not up to any shenanigans*
