Can Cloudsdale actually host the Equestria Games?

I recently watched the "Equestria Games" episode and when Rainbow Dash said she dreamed Cloudsdale to host the Equestria Games when she was younger I was wondering if Cloudsdale can actually host the games.

You know the situation, Cloudsdale is 100% made of clouds and only pegasi can step on it, so in theory it would be impossible for other pony races to practice sports in a city that for their hooves is pure gas, of course there's the sorcering that allow other races to step on clouds, but only Twilight and a few unicorns can do it and it would take too much work and effort to apply it to hundreds  thousands or even millions of ponies who visit Cloudsdale.

I doubt it, if there's enough power to cast a full disabling spell, there probably would be enough to let every event attendee walk on the clouds for the duration of the Games.

No because they would not want to bring attention to *looks around*... the factory.

...

But honestly that is an excellent question. I believe you may have dug up a plot hole.

Cool things people have said about me:

Never heard of him but I guess just you mentioning him is a good reason not to go anywhere near that name.

(In reference to an author I suggested.)

I'm guessing that the City of Cloudsdale and their citizens technically own all the air below it much the same way that cities IRL on the ground allow for air rights  on property that is on the ground.

So therefore if they ever got the Equestria Games, they'd have to build temporary structures on the ground given the air barrier.  Simple as that.  Though it is not surprising that this oversight caused them to be passed over.

Well as far as having the Equestria games in Cloudsdale it would be impossible for non Pegasi to enter besides with the help of magic.

That said hosting might not necessarily mean they will have the games there, but maybe they will have the games in a certain place and Cloudsdale will just be in charge of running things.

Or maybe they'll have all the non Pegasi on the ground below or something.

It depends upon what exactly they mean by hosting, but if they mean having the games in Cloudsdal, then yes, that is technically impossible.

That's actually pretty credible.  As far as I remember, the last Winter Olympics didn't take place in Sochi proper, but a bit of a ways away.

I am not quite keen enough on the geography of Russia to really know for sure where the Winter Olympics took place in relation to sochi, but I do know that it was apparently just a kind of frozen wasteland before they setup the Olympics there. So it's likely it may not have been proper Sochi based on that.

So I suppose it's possible something similar may happen with Cloudsdale if they were to host the Equestria games.

We may never know for sure though.

Sochi is actually sub-tropical and it was warm during the OWG while the mountains have enough snow (well, it was almost melting during the games) to host the snow events so it makes sense.

Of course let's not forget opening ceremonies are always held in the main city, and for Cloudsdale that must be the main problem regardless if other events are held in the ground.

Well then the actual Equestria games could easily be held in a place not directly in Cloudsdale by that logic.

As far as the opening ceremonies go, maybe they can have it outside, and the non Pegasi would just watch from the ground?

I guess it would be good for spectators but not too much for competitors since there's still the athlete's parade.

I guess that's true, but maybe Twilight or Celestia could use a spell to help them walk on clouds, just for the ceremony.

I would assume it's possible atleast.

Well, that's a good question, maybe there would be some kind of special portable arena that normal ponies could access. this would make sense, because I'm pretty sure some of the events are grounded.

I'd say there would be some kind of machine or balloon that transports ponies up there.

I'm guessing that areas such as the following picture can be walked on by anypony too, and it doesn't look to me that all of the buildings are made out of clouds which would make hosting the Equestria Games sound a bit more plausible!

I suppose the arena is possible. But I think that the area your picture is in is still made of clouds.

Regardless assuming they could do it with something other than clouds the arena idea could work.

Not unless a blanket cloud-walking spell is put over the entire city for unicorns and earth ponies and refreshed at a three day interval before anypony falls to their doom. They'd also have that problem of logistics. Not everypony would want to stay overnight, so apart from at least a few forms of accommodation, hot air balloons must be at the Princess's behest to ferry those back to earth.

Last problem, Harshwhinny. It's going to take a lot of convincing to get the Equestria Games Committee on board.

I think this would be the most likely scenario. In any case, 'host' is an ambiguous term. We know the Crystal Empire hosted the most recent games, but did they all take place within that one arena?

In the end, it may be safe to assume that Cloudsdale isn't just the big floating city. I can imagine some earth & unicorn ponies making residence just below it.

That is true. It did not seem that it all did.

However I don't remember that episode to well, but regardless ;p.

It is unclear if Cloudsdale includes the ground below it, but regardless for the Equestria games I feel like it could use the ground below if they really needed to.

I don't see why not. Going by the semi-official(?) maps we've seen of Equestria, Cloudsdale is really near any other major city or town, so there should be room to expand should the need ever arrive.

Well, even not going by the semi official(Idk how official this map is either to be honest ;p.) we can see that below it there doesn't appear to be much in the way of other things below it really, so i'd assume it's possible, and even if there was, i'm sure there wouldn't be any real issues with a temporary setup for the games.

Agreed. Plus, one thing to keep in mind is that the 2002 FIFA World Cup was shared between Japan & South Korea, so if other options were exhausted, Cloudsdale could share the games with Canterlot or Vanhoover if need be.

Again, going by said map. :P

That is true, really even if Cloudsdale can't handle the whole games all by themselves, there are always alternatives that are available, even if they don't all involve the games being strictly in canterlot.

However, that leads me to wonder if the games could ever pass the inspection to host the games regardless, because really if they are going to have issues you'd think others would offer better alternatives typically.(No offense to Cloudsdale)

Well, while you do have a point, I doubt the sisters would be that harsh to strip Cloudsdale of the honor of hosting some, if not all, of the games. Again, I can see negotiations happening and compromises being made. Really, the majority population of Cloudsdale is pegasai, so I doubt they'd be too disappointed if the ground-related activities couldn't be held in the city proper.

Granted Ms. Harshwinny is...well, harsh, but I doubt Cloudsdale would be excluded for that.

I guess that's true. But it would make it tough to impress Ms. Harshwinny. Or any games inspector.

I doubt the Pegasi would mind if some of the ground events are held on the ground, I think they'd understand the reasons for it.

In theory, yes it would be quite possible for a city like Cloudsdale to host the Equestrian Games.

In practice, no unfortunately. Just look at the planning at the Crystal Empire. Even with their best planning, they couldn't account for a potential safety hazard arising from ice arrows creating potential frozen debris raining down on spectators, officials and competitors. They were lucky that a dragon as competent as Spike was able to even contain that potential clusterfuck, before someone got hurt or died.

While Cloudsdale shows the potential to have infrastructure that can support non pegasi and griffons, there track record isn't exactly reliable. In Sonic Rainboom alone, the supposedly well trained professional Wonderbolts weren't even able to competently rescue Rarity on their own. And as we saw in Wonderbolts Academy the reckless and negligent oversight and leadership of Spitfire nearly led to the Mane 6 dying because of Lightning Dust's reckless behavior that Spitfire ignored or tolerated, not to mention that Spitfire failed to take responsibility for her own actions but also threw Lightning Dust under the bus as a scapegoat.

No I'm sorry I don't think Cloudsdale would be ready. Its very foreseeable that an accident that a collapsing bleacher or platform could lead to several dozen spectators, competitors and officials plummeting to their death. And neither the Wonderbolts nor Cloudsdale officials have proved competent in reacting to emergencies. Even in Equestria Games, Celestia and Luna both proved too incompetent to handle the crisis and neither they nor a single Rainbow Dash or the combined forces of the Mane 6 may be enough to avert a disaster.

I don't think it's too plausible economically for Cloudsdale.

Building a new temporary stadium underneath Cloudsdale would defeat the purpose of the existing Stadium in the sky, and the pegasi might as well live on the ground. So it's unlikely that'll happen.
