movies/tv Animation/Cartoons Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

I noticed that there isn't a general discussion thread for animation, so I decided to make one myself. Any other animation enthusiasts here? Any of you guys do your own animation?

Cartoons I've been watching lately besides MLP:

Invader Zim - As soon I saw that kid's eyes get torn out and replaced with robotic ones I knew I was in love with this show. "Hey, let's get the guy who made Johnny The Homicidal Maniac and have him make a kids show!"

Ruby Gloom - I feel like a lot of bronies would be into this show if they checked it out. It has a relatively large cast of characters (slightly bigger than MLP's, I think), is kinda moral focused but not as much as MLP used to be, and has a sort of pseudo-gothic art style that I've never really seen before.

Adventure Time - This show doesn't really need much of an introduction at this point. It seems to be kind of a "love it or hate it" show, but I love it.

The Maxx - This was a cool little mini-series that aired on MTV. I haven't read the comic it's based on but it's supposed to be pretty accurate.

Wander Over Yonder - An incredibly fun, cute show that doesn't get as much attention as it deserves. It's created by Craig McCracken and also worked on by Lauren Faust, so that alone should tell you it's worth checking out if you haven't already.

So, feel free to discuss anything related to cartoons or animation. Whether it be about western cartoons, movies, anime, or even internet flash cartoons.

I've recently begun getting into animated shows more. I hadn't watched cartoons in years up until less than a year ago when my friend introduced me to Adventure Time. Then I got into MLP. And now I've begun watching (starting from the first episode) Aqua Teen Hunger Force (I love the humour in this show, the premise and plots are really bizarre and the dialogue and character interactions are frequently hilarious), Regular Show, Littlest Pet Shop (I've only watched the first episode, so I'm going to watch a couple more before I decide whether I like it and want to watch more of it or not; I wasn't too interested in the first episode, but I don't want to judge the series on just the first episode), and, most recently (as in, a couple days ago) The Powerpuff Girls. I watched that show a bit when I was a kid, but I didn't remember much about it, except that I think I enjoyed it. But man, I was surprised as soon as I started watching it at how hilarious and entertaining of a show it is! It's a show I'd recommend to anyone who's looking for a funny cartoon to get into. It's freaking awesome.

Also, I've been thinking a lot lately of getting into some anime... I've barely ever watched anime before, except some Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon many years ago. I've been thinking of maybe watching the first season of Pokemon. Also, I heard from some friends that "Attack on Titan" is a very good anime series. So I might try that too. And of course I've heard of Naruto and Bleach, which are both apparently good series, though I'm not sure I want to make a commitment to watching them, since usually when I start a show I plan to watch every episode from the beginning, but I think those shows have quite a few episodes, so it'd be a big time commitment.

I haven't heard of any of the shows you mentioned except Adventure Time, but I'll definitely check out "Wander Over Yonder" since it's made by the guy who made the Powerpuff Girls.

Oh, wait a minute, I just looked up Ruby Gloom on Wikipedia and realized I do actually know about it! I watched it when I was younger, probably when it was first airing on YTV (a Canadian channel) back in 2006-2008. I really liked the dark, Gothic style of it. I think I'll add that to my list of shows to watch this summer :) .

Alright, I will. Today. I am looking forward to this.

I'm huge on cartoons, even more than I am live action. So here's what I saw recently.

I recently have been watching the Pokemon anime for a nostalgia trip. Well it's cheesy and retentive looking back, it's got the nostalgic heart that makes it enjoyable to me. Also, it's got some laughably stupid moments, like the dub editing the rice balls to donuts.'

I also watched South Park and enjoyed it. Yes, it's got some unnecessary toilet humor and some stuff I don't like, but it does clever on the social commentary part.

I was thinking of watching more of the new Littlest Pet Shop show. From what I've seen of it, it's decent and has humor and writing similar to MLP.

Also I saw a new Cartoon Network show calleld Clearence, and it's actually pretty decent. Not something I'd watch regularly, but it's got some stuff you probably did as a kid. It's defiantly got a Hey Arnold or Ed Edd n Eddy feel to it.

Also Attack on Titan is a pretty good action packed show.

Dude it's amazing, seriously.

Anyway, in an effort to contribute in this thread, cartoon-wise I like South Park, Family Guy (I know, terrible), American Dad and Adventure Time off the top of my head. Anime-wise, some great ones are Hetalia, Madoka Magica, Soul Eater, Death Note and Ouran High School Host Club. Oh, and Attack on Titan :>

Have you guys tried Steven Universe yet? It's really cute and has the same feel as Adventure Time with less surrealism and more friendship. The main character may be that underdog cliche, but the way his other friends treat him as almost brotherly is so adorable and not something I see a lot in cartoons. The art style and music is also very good. I highly recommend checking it out!

My brother is really into South Park. He started the series from the beginning and is on Season 7 right now. I don't think he plans to catch up on all the seasons, I think he'll just watch till he gets bored of it; he's already saying there's a noticeable decline in how funny the episodes are compared with the first few seasons. I've seen some episodes of South Park but not very much, and I think it's funny but not something I'd watch regularly. I'm not very into mature cartoons. Except I do really like shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force or Bob's Burgers (which is one I forgot to mention in my first post; has anyone else here seen this show? It's soooo funny) because they are "mature" in that they can have mature content in it, but they choose not to very often. So there's whole entire episodes of ATHF or Bob's Burgers that are perfectly suitable for a young audience, but every once in a while they will have an episode or a scene dealing with a mature topic that is not suitable for a younger audience, so it's enjoyable because it doesn't need to refrain from mature things like a kid's show would, but it doesn't solely use crude, mature jokes for humour, it finds other ways to get laughs most of the time.

Another show I forgot to mention in my first post: Spongebob Squarepants. This was like my favourite show as a kid. I'd love to start re-watching it, both for the lolz and the nostalgia.

I've heard of it but haven't watched it. I'll check it out I guess, and see if I like it.

From what I've seen of Bob's Burgers, it's a pretty decent show. Surprisingly, it's an adult cartoon that doesn't use shock humor as it's main source kind of like King of the Hill.

As for Spogebob, I like the early seasons but the new ones are pretty bad to me.

I was into this show back when it first aired. I really liked it for the most part, I think I might have watched the first six episodes and then stopped watching because I'm lazy. I really need to get back into it at some point. To me it has a different feel than Adventure Time but has that same emotional depth that I enjoy.

Also, I really need to get back into anime sometime. I watched an episode of Squid Girl a while back and enjoyed it, I've also heard a lot about Attack on Titan.

I totally agree with all of that. I've seen a little bit of King of the Hill, and I've noticed it's very much like that. And the earlier Spongebob seasons are definitely better than the newer ones, for sure.

I need to get back to watching it too, actually. I haven't watched the new episodes that aired. I've been too stuck on catching up on paused anime.

I watched all Attack on Titan with my brother maybe like 2 months ago. I love the animation, but it really wasn't my cup of tea. Then again, I don't think the series is finished and it probably aired a lot more episodes. So maybe I should check back and see if where It's going will get me interested as well.

Someday, I really just need to sit down and watch or rematch the entirety of Blazing Dragons & Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go. Really, for me, these two shows are the only ones that come close to matching FiM for me.

God, I miss that show.

I never saw that show as a kid but I remember seeing it in the guide as a kid well flipping through the channels and being like, "That's a long title."

I remember seeing commercials for the show. To me, it just looked too silly and childish. I mean, robot monkeys? HA!

Then I watched the show, and my mind was freakin' blown. Kinda like when I first saw "Friendship is Magic." ;)

As a 23-year-old I am still a huge fan of cartoons, and I have no shame about it! I'm a fan of Adventure Time, Littlest Pet Shop, SheZow, and Spongebob (even though I prefer old Spongebob than new Spongebob tbh). I'm also a huuuuuuuge fan of 90's cartoons, and yeah...I DVR EVERYTHING that's on the 90's are All That that's on TeenNick every night at midnight. Rugrats, Hey Arnold, Doug, CatDog, are high up on my list. Not to mention Invader Zim, Powerpuff Girls, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Johnny Bravo, Kim Possible, The Proud Family, all those cartoons literally defined my childhood right there. To this day I still enjoy them.

For the animation fans that haven't seen this yet, I highly encourage checking it out.

It's the pilot episode for a show that was unfortunately rejected by Nick a few years back. It's funny that they'll accept something like breadwinners and reject shows like this and Adventure Time. Although in AT's case it was probably for the best.

When it comes to western animation, I'll admit to being quite a fan of animated comedies such as Family Guy(sort of a love-hate relationship with that one), American Dad, South Park, Robot Chicken(if that counts?), The Simpsons somewhat, and my favorite of them all Futurama. I also quite like shows such as Avatar The Last Airbender, classic episodes of Spongebob Squarepants, and Invader Zim, some of my favorite stuff that skews more towards kids yet still enough for someone like me to enjoy, apart from MLPFiM of course anyway. :)

Hey, Futurama's my favourite show too.  I'm actually in the process of re-watching it from start to finish.

Animation enthusiast is something I definitely am.  And I do make animations; it's my job and all.  I love discussing animation as well.

Recently I had been eye-binge-ing on Glen Keane's work and, just a few days ago, he put out this glorious short:

And in more modern TV shows, I'm particularly loving the new Ninja Turtles series.  It's probably my favourite currently running show.
